Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 20, and a host of events leading up the main event are scheduled around Intown. A program of events can be found at The King Center website at this link.

The MLK March Committee, The Atlanta Police Department, The National Park Service, The King Center, Presbyterian Church (USA), Georgians for Gun Safety, and others will host a free city-wide screening of “Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence” to be followed by a discussion about what can be done to prevent gun violence in our community on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at historic Ebenezer Baptist Church on Auburn Avenue. The event will also include a panel discussion from local officials about gun violence. The event is free and open to the public.

On Jan. 18, the annual Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner will be held at the Hyatt Regency Downtown starting at 6 p.m. Boxing great Muhammad Ali and Xerox Corporation will be honored at this year’s event. Tickets are $250 each and can be purchased at thekingcenter.org.

On Monday, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Ebenezer Baptist – Horizon Sanctuary on Auburn Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. The keynote speaker will be Rev. Raphael Warnock, Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Church. Parking is limited in the area, so be sure to arrive early or consider taking MARTA to the King Memorial station.

The DeKalb NAACP branch will hold its 12th annual parade and rally in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 20 at 12:30 p.m. The parade will begin at the parking lot of Green Pastures Christian Ministries, 5455 Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur, continue onto Snapfinger Road/MLK Parkway and end  at MLK Jr. High School, 3991 Snapfinger Road/MLK Parkway. A rally will be held in the school’s auditorium immediately following the parade.

Hands on Atlanta will also be hosting the day-long MLK Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 20, which is an opportunity for  citizens to make a difference by partaking in a community service projects happening around the city.
