Position Details
SUMMARY
Performs evaluation testing on all hardware and software components for new product offerings, network growth and/or customer-specific applications. Plans, designs, and tests complex data networks including individual components and interoperability of multiple network elements. May perform operational efficiency reviews and develop plans for improvements as necessary. At higher levels, conducts strategic network assessments based upon emerging network trends, technologies, and/or future service offerings and develops plans to address needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Conducts extensive lab evaluations and integration testing of network elements and document results.
2. Formulates integrated data network architectures based upon demand, capacity, emerging network services, trends, and technologies.
3. Plans future network enhancements and directions for access, metro, and national networks.
4. Provides detailed engineering support and consultation to field systems, design engineers, and implementation teams.
5. Serves as primary subject matter expert in the area of engineering specialty.
6. Conduct engineering economic, alternative, and feasibility evaluations.
7. Develops network element technical specifications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
1. 5+ yrs of experience in related field (i.e. Network Engineering, Network Security, Engineering, Linux System Admin).
2. Minimum of 3+ years experience with Linux/BSD server administration and management.
3. 5+ years working with TCP/UDP Protocols.
4. Minimum of 3+ years traffic monitoring tools, Wireshark, Sniffer, WildPackets, etc.
5. Minimum of 5+ years experience implementing advanced, complex network designs.

Preferred
1. BS/BA in related discipline (i.e., Computer Science, Information Systems, etc) OR MS/MA and 3-5 years of experience in related field.
2. TCP/IP, OSI: In-depth knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol stack and practical application of the OSI model, including packet headers, traffic flow, etc.
3. Advanced to expert knowledge of IP traffic flow, sniffing/capturing/monitoring live traffic streams.
4. Experience with vendor solutions from Procera Networks, Sandvine, or Allot.
5. LAN: In-depth knowledge of LAN administration, Ethernet hubs, switches, and cabling.
6. WAN: Working knowledge of routing protocols in a service provider environment, specifically: OSPF, BGP, IS-IS.
7. Operating Systems: In-depth experience with UNIX/Linux and Windows operating environments.
8. UNIX/Linux system administration: In-depth experience with most common UNIX/Linux services and system administration functions, ranging from shell sessions to specific services (such as Sendmail, Apache, X windows, user/group administration, etc.)
9. Experience systematically managing large number of remote systems using command-line tools.
10. Firewalls: In-depth knowledge of rule-set creation and specific security implications of rule-set modifications in a production setting.
11. Encryption: Experience with SSH, VPN, PGP, PKI, and other encryption and authentication technologies.
12. Video: General understanding of video distribution in a cable environment.
13. Proxies: General knowledge of service proxies.
14. Cross platform network attack concepts - common probing and attack methods, network/service discovery.
15. Knowledge of common methods of virus and worm propagation.
16. Knowledge of cable industry specifications - DOCSIS/PCMM.
17. Telephony Security: General understanding of both SIP and MGCP protocols, Traffic monitoring.
18. E-mail Security: Understanding of e-mail headers, spam handling, and attack handling.
19. Network Management Systems: Experience with SNMP, syslog, and performance monitoring tools.
20. Experience with configuring and installing hardware, ranging from servers to network equipment.
21. Background in lab testing methodology and requirements.
22. Certification preferred CCSP, CCNP-Security, or CCIE (if applicable).
