Association News:

International Congress and Convention Association’s new five-year strategic plan, launched before the recent ICCA 2015 Congress in Buenos Aires, focusses on improving the success and value of association meetings and on increasing the effectiveness of ICCA’s relationship with association executives and meeting planners. The plan includes a new vision "to shape the future and value of international association meetings. "ICCA CEO Martin Sirk said: “ICCA should not simply be an observer or an extractor of data from what’s going on in the international association field. This vision places us as a key actor at the heart of what’s going on in the sector. It implies that we will be much more active in helping international associations extract value from their events and to help those meetings deliver the outcomes that the associations are striving for.”

Also, ICCA launched another extension of its Big Data Search tool, which allows suppliers to the international association meetings industry to find potential sponsors for the meetings they organise. The new tool analyses what sponsors have been involved in past or future confirmed events. As a result, 16,000 unique sponsors are identified who have high potential to be a sponsor of new events. Details: www.iccaworld.org.

Baseball Writers’ Association of America is considering whether writers for the Major League Baseball website may join the association. The decision could have come as early as the weekend when the New York Mets hosted the World Series at Citi Field. But not enough writers were at the World Series for a full-scale meeting on the topic. The overwhelming consensus was to table the issue until the annual winter meetings in Nashville. At issue is a 2006 addition to the association’s constitution that made writers for MLB.com ineligible for membership in the association. The proposed change would eliminate the 2006 provision and leave it up to each association chapter to decide whether to accept an applicant for membership.
