The first section of renovated meeting space at the SMG-managed Greater Columbus Convention Center has been completed and already was host to events for the Minor League Baseball Promotional Seminar 2015 and the Materials Science & Technology 2015 conference. The two second-floor meeting rooms and foyer comprise the first portion of the $125 million expansion and full-scale renovation of the facility that will be completed in 2017.

Blackbaud, a provider of cloud software and services for the worldwide philanthropic community, acquired Smart Tuition, a provider of payment software and services for private schools and parents for $190 million. Smart Tuition’s full product suite, including Smart Tuition, Smart Aid and Smart for Dioceses, will fold into Blackbaud’s K-12 lineup. Matt Knapp, CEO of Smart Tuition, will continue leading the group, reporting to Kevin Mooney, EVP and president of Blackbaud’s General Markets Business Unit.

Barbara A. Myers, CAE, was named COO of IMN Solutions, an AMC, effective Nov. 1. Myers joined IMN Solutions in 2014 as association services VP. She has spearheaded the creation of three new divisions under the IMN Solutions brand; IMN Association Management, IMN Event Solutions and IMN TechNet as part of its strategic growth plan to provide expanded services to its rapidly growing list of clients. Before IMN Solutions, Myers was professional development VP at the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering. The Arizona Technology Council, Arizona Business Incubation Association and Startup Mexico signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen the economic diversity of their respective regions by sharing best practices with one another, ensuring that innovators and technology entrepreneurs across Arizona and Mexico enjoy the best possible support. Each organization will work to facilitate contact between startups and angel investors and other financing opportunities across their markets.

David Michael McLean, a former partner in the Anaconda, Mont., law firm of McLean & McLean PLLP, pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft involving an association, among other victims. McLean stole more than $460,000 from his clients and $62,325 from the Montana chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates between 2009 and 2014, according to court documents. McLean wrote checks to himself or his law firm, signing his name as secretary/treasurer of the Montana Chapter of ABOTA and forging the signature of another ABOTA officer.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Association of Science-Technology Centers that will provide more than 500 member museums and science-technology centers with resources to incorporate agricultural science and research in their programs. Under the agreement, USDA will provide ASTC with resources for programs, exhibits, and other education and outreach activities based on the department's work at its network of Research Centers, Land-Grant Universities, Tribal Colleges, Forest Service, National Arboretum and other programs.

A survey by the Association of Destination Management Companies International found that almost 60 percent of member DMCs report a stronger 3Q15 compared to 3Q14; 77 percent report their 3Q 2015 was as good as or better than their 3Q 2014. This continues the trend of increasing business member DMCs are experiencing around the world. Eighty-nine percent project that 4Q15 will be as good as or better than 4Q14.

Center for Exhibition Industry Research released the report Managing Results: Benchmarks for Exhibit Growth. This document offers exhibitors a primer on exhibit goal setting that aligns with an organization's strategic goals and defining metrics that track event performance against these goals. Thr report lists 99 reasons why organizations choose to exhibit, and steps to follow: Importance of Defining Objectives; Quantifying Your Objectives; Define Metrics to Assess Outcome of Exhibiting to Stated Objectives; Be Realistic About Your Objectives; and Establish Benchmarks.

ICUEE 2015, the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition, Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Kentucky Exposition Center, set a show record with more than 18,000 registered attendees, and surpassing the last show by 13 percent. The 2015 show set records for exhibit space and number of exhibitors. More than 950 exhibitors, including more than 250 companies new to the show, took more than 1.2 million net sq. ft. of exhibit space.

National Grocers Association held its fourth annual National Best Bagger Congressional Showdown, held in conjunction with the American Frozen Food Institute's Frozen Filibuster on Sept. 30 at the Library of Congress in Washington. NGA's 2015 Best Bagger National Champion, David Tochinskiy of Rosauers Supermarkets in Spokane, Wash., competed against Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. David defended his title with a bagging completion time of 38 seconds. McMorris Rodgers finished at a respectable 40 seconds.
