Cyber Security Dashboards : Are there too Many Automated Tools?
Cyber Security Tools: Too Many to Manage?
In June 2014, we were talking to a potential client about a custom cyber security solution. When the topic of tools arose, the CTO (Chief Technical Officer) didn’t even blink an eye and blurted out, “We already have enough tools. We don’t need another one.” I was a bit taken aback because this meeting was about securing a very specific issue – Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs).
The main issue was that the only tools this company had employed were a basic endpoint monitoring system and regular antivirus software, neither of which was made for this particular vulnerability. When we started to talk about the various ways to protect against APT’s, the CTO responded, “We just bought this tool last year and it gives us full protection of our network. I just need it to work more efficiently.”
It was at this moment that we realized the issue. Cyber security tool companies excel at convincing customers that their tool is the ultimate solution, which is actually harming organizations. What the CTO failed to understand is that there are specific cyber security tools for specific vulnerabilities. Endpoint scanning is good for ensuring computers are patched and regular antivirus software needs a preexisting virus signature. The problem is that many people at the senior level don’t know the difference. It seems that, every month, there is a new cyber security tool promising to be the “end-all-be-all” of cyber tools.
The Integrated Cyber Security Dashboard
What if there was a way to visually show people how all these tools work together? What if we could create a product that could link all of these tools together so that regular IT professionals could understand what their network protection looks like in real time? What if Board Members could understand this? This is how the concept of the Aspiration Solution was conceived. Our cyber security solution will act as the primary decision-making tool for each company’s entire cyber security strategy.
Our team has the experience to effectively implement and bring this product to market. In the past, the members of our team have owned, built and sold two previous companies for over a total market cap of over $100,000,000. Unlike most start ups, we have experience across all facets of an organization from the startup stage through to the final liquidity event. Our experience spans the financial, operations, marketing, business development and technological areas of a company.
