intro:

i am a linux (and ubuntu) newbie and i am having serious trouble getting ubuntu to run on my HP laptop, despite having apparently successfully installed alongside pre-installed windows 10... please help :)

issue description:

i installed ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS alongside pre-installed windows 10 on my HP notebook earlier this week.

the installation claimed to have completed successfully

however, upon rebooting the system at any time after installation and selecting *ubuntu from the grub boot manager, all i am presented with is either a black screen, or a purple screen or a plethora of stack trace errors, [image links of the stack trace screen shot is attached as per jos's request]...

this is also despite the fact that i can happily try running ubuntu without installing off the boot usb that i created

i'm not having any issues with boot order and the windows 10 os still boots normally (as far as i can see)

i've read a number of posts suggesting running in recovery mode, adding the nomodeset or noapic strings to the boot commands in the grub boot manager before running, but no luck so far

i've also tried booting from grub using the advanced options and selecting *ubuntu with linux 4.4.0-21-generic (recovery mode), but again a bunch of stack trace errors (which might mean more to you than me) so please see the links to the screenshots following immediately after this paragraph [image links of the stack trace screen shot is attached as per jos's request]...

i followed the ubuntu suggested approach to creating my usb boot drive and the install provided an option for performing the dual os installation, which i followed

environment details:

Processor AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G, 1800 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

BIOS Version/Date Insyde F.15, 26/04/2016

conclusion:

your assistance is very much appreciated... i was so excited getting going on linux (and ubuntu), knowing that it would be challenging, but i was at least hoping to start up the os :)

regards
otto
