Five To Follow MLB Betting: Sunday, July 26, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews
When is Major League Baseball going to step in and force the current Mets ownership to sell? It did that with former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, and look at where that franchise is now. It’s thriving and has the highest payroll in the game. The Mets spend like a small-market team. Yet this week, Commissioner Rob Manfred offered an endorsement of the penny-pinching owners: “I’ve known both Fred and Jeff Wilpon a very long time,” he said. “I know they are absolutely committed to winning and that they will spend money when they think they can spend money and have it be effective in terms of making that team better.” They haven’t shown it yet, and if New York doesn’t add a big bat it’s just an embarrassment — dealing for Atlanta’s Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson on Friday hardly counts. Entering the weekend, the Mets’ team average was .233, the worst in the majors. By comparison, maybe the worst team in modern MLB history, the 1962 expansion Mets, hit .240 as a team. One Mets player said this to the New York Daily News about John Mayberry Jr. hitting cleanup on Thursday: “he’s hitting one f—–g seventy.” The Mets have called up top prospect Michael Conforto, an outfielder. But you can’t expect a rookie to carry your team. I actually revel in New York teams being lousy. But it’s a shame with all that pitching.
♦ Nationals at Pirates (-185, 7)
Washington hasn’t missed disappointing Stephen Strasburg, out since July 4, at all because his rotation replacement, Joe Ross, has been very good in his place. He’s a former first-round pick from the Padres — San Diego pitcher Tyson is his older brother — acquired in that three-team trade with Tampa this offseason. Ross (2-2, 2.70) has pretty great command considering he has struck out 27 and walked just two in 26.2 innings. He did face the Pirates on June 19 and allowed a run and six hits over 7.1 innings, striking out a career-high 11. It’s All-Star Gerrit Cole (13-4, 2.31) for Pittsburgh. He was a tough-luck loser last time out, allowing two earned over 7.1 innings in Kansas City. Cole hasn’t faced Washington this season. Ian Desmond is 1-for-4 with a homer off him.
Key trends: The Pirates are 4-1 in Cole’s past five vs. teams with a winning record. The “over/under” has gone under in seven straight Cole starts vs. the NL East.
Early lean: Pirates and under.
♦♦ Astros at Royals (-108, 7)
Houston ace lefty Dallas Keuchel (12-4, 2.12) looks to continue his Cy Young campaign on Sunday in a potential playoff preview in Kansas City. Keuchel was spectacular in his first start out of the break, shutting out Texas over seven innings on two hits and striking out a season-high 13. Keuchel retired the final 18 batters he faced. He now leads the AL in ERA as well as wins. Keuchel faced the Royals on June 30 and shut them out over eight innings. Kendrys Morales is 4-for-13 with an RBI off him. Alex Rios is a career .348 hitter off him in 23 at-bats. Kansas City goes with Yordano Ventura, who was shipped to Triple-A early this week only to be recalled the next day when fellow starter Jason Vargas suffered a season-ending injury. Ventura (4-7, 5.19) allowed six runs and 10 hits over four innings last time out vs. Pittsburgh. He hasn’t faced Houston this year.
Key trends: The Astros have won six straight Keuchel starts vs. teams with a winning record. The Royals are 0-6 in Ventura’s past six vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 6-1 in Kuechel’s past seven vs. teams with a winning record.
Early lean: Call it a hunch, but go Royals. Under.
♦♦ Marlins at Padres (+100, 7.5)
Nothing is 100 percent in life, but I’m 99.9 percent sure that Sunday will be the final start in a Marlins uniform for Mat Latos — if he gets pulled before or during it, you know he has been traded. Latos (4-6, 4.48) would be a good second-tier addition for a contender like Toronto or the Cubs. Latos has built up his value by allowing just three runs and 11 hits over 20 innings in his past three starts. He hasn’t faced San Diego in 2015. Justin Upton is 8-for-17 with four extra-base hits off him. Yonder Alonso is 4-for-5. The Padres’ Odrisamer Despaigne (3-7, 4.98) was knocked around last time out, allowing six runs in five innings against the Giants. He has never faced the Marlins.
Key trends: The Marlins are 2-5 in Latos’ past seven on the road. The Marlins are 1-5 in Despaigne’s past six at home. The over is 4-0 in Despaigne’s past four at home.
Early lean: Padres and over.
♦♦ Blue Jays at Mariners (-102, 7.5)
I still say Toronto can win the AL East even though the Yankees are playing really well right now. The Jays are going to add pitching by July 31. Quietly having a very good season is 36-year-old lefty Mark Buehrle (11-5, 3.23). He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since May 29, and he has gone at least seven innings in all but one of those nine outings. Guy is becoming a borderline Hall of Famer. Probably needs to pitch a few more good years to have a shot. He lost at home to Seattle on May 23, allowing three runs in 7.1 innings. Robinson Cano is 9-for-32 with three homers and 11 RBIs off him. Nelson Cruz can’t hit the guy, going 2-for-22. Mark Trumbo is 6-for-12 with three homers. Seattle goes with Taijuan Walker (7-7, 5.06). He is 0-2 with a 9.39 in his past three starts. Walker lost in Toronto on May 24, allowing four runs in 5.2 innings. Edwin Encarnacion is 1-for-5 with a homer off him.
Key trends: The Jays are 13-3 in Buehrle’s past 16 vs. teams with a winning record. The Mariners are 7-1 in Walker’s past eight. The over is 3-0-1 in Walker’s past four overall.
Early lean: Mariners and over.
♦♦ Tigers at Red Sox (-143, 8.5)
This is your Sunday night ESPN game and thus will have live betting at sportsbooks. This looked like a marquee matchup back when ESPN set its schedule. Now it’s a dog. The Red Sox are totally imploding as they opened the second half going 0-7 on their seven-game road trip. It was Boston’s first winless trip of at least that long in 64 years. The Sox go with rookie lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (5-3, 4.64). He was rocked on Monday for seven runs in just 1.2 innings at the Angels. This will be his first career start vs. Detroit. For the Tigers it’s Shane Greene (4-7, 6.52). He might be the AL’s worst starter right now. Detroit has lost his past six and he has allowed at five runs in five of those. Xander Bogaerts is 2-for-4 with a homer off him. Mike Napoli is 1-for-1 with a homer and three RBIs.
Key trends: The Tigers are 1-4 in Greene’s past five on the road. The over is 5-1 in Detroit’s past six against lefties.
Early lean: Red Sox and over.

Game of the Day: Tiger-Cats at Roughriders
♠ Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchwan Roughriders (-1, 56)
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats look to put a disappointing start to the season behind them when they hit the road to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. The Tiger-Cats were pegged by many as East Division favourites in the preseason but have lost two of their first three games, including a 17-13 setback to the Montreal Alouettes in Week 4.
Penalties and turnovers have hampered Hamilton’s progress and it hopes to turn things around by securing its first victory in Regina since a 35-34 triumph on July 28, 2012. The Roughriders look to avoid their first 0-5 start in 20 years after dropping a 27-24 decision to the BC Lions. Kevin Glenn has been a more than capable replacement for the injured Darian Durant, and leads the league with 1,228 passing yards, but Saskatchewan’s defence has given up a least 27 points in every game. The Roughriders have dropped their first three home games after finishing 6-3 last season, but have had some recent success against Hamilton, winning the last two meetings in Regina by an average margin of 29 points.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN
LINE HISTORY: The spread opened as a pick’em before moving to SSK -1. The total has jumped a point from 55 to 56.
INJURY REPORT:
Tiger-Cats – DB Neil King (Ques-Undisclosed), DB Courtney Stephen (Ques-Undisclosed)
Roughriders – LB Shea Emry (Ques-Neck)
WHAT CAPPERS SAY: “All is not well in Riderville, as Saskatchewan is still win-less heading into this Week 5 match-up versus Hamilton. It doesn’t help matters that the Riders lost their starting quarterback in Week 1, but it would be unfair to blame backup Kevin Glenn for the rough start. Glenn is among the league leaders averaging over 300 yards per game, completing 74 percent of his passes. Saskatchewan is better than their 0-4 record would suggest, and it’s important to note that each of those four losses came in games decided by four points or less.” – Will Rogers
ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS, 1-2 O/U): Zach Collaros had his worst outing of the year after finishing 27-of-42 for 296 yards and three interceptions as Hamilton turned the ball over five times versus the Alouettes. The Tiger-Cats will get a big boost with the news that running back C.J. Gable has recovered from a finger injury and is back on the practice field after missing the first three games of the season. Linebacker Rico Murray, who led the team with five interceptions last year, has recovered from a hamstring injury and could be in line for his first start Sunday.
ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS, 3-0 O/U): Weston Dressler continued his hot start as he hauled in six passes for 125 yards against the Lions and is second in the CFL with 329 receiving yards. Ryan Smith, who has 11 catches for 251 yards and two touchdowns, is set to return to the lineup after missing the last two games with an upper-body injury while wide receiver Taj Smith is done for the rest of the season. “He wasn’t at his fullest so we shut Taj down,” Saskatchewan coach Corey Chamblin told reporters. “There’s some other guys that moved ahead of him.”
*Tiger-Cats are 2-13-1 ATS in their last 16 meetings in Saskatchewan.
*Roughriders are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
*Under is 10-4 in Tiger-Cats last 14 games overall.
*Over is 6-2 in Roughriders last 8 games following a S.U. loss.
CONSENSUS: 64.4 percent is behind SSK, with 53.5 percent on the under.
Jamaica, Mexico meet in Gold Cup Final Sunday
By: Ethan Back
‘Gold Cup’
♠ Final ♠
Kick-off: Sunday, 7:30 p.m. ET
Line: Jamaica +290, Mexico -109, Tie +260, Total: 2.5
Mexico and Jamaica square off in the Gold Cup Final on Sunday.
Mexico is quite fortunate to be playing in the Gold Cup Final after a controversial victory against Panama. Panama’s Luis Tejada received a red card in the 25th minute, but his country struck first in the 57th minute from a Román Torres goal. It appeared as if Panama was going to hold on for the victory, but a questionable penalty call at the death of regulation gave Mexico a lifeline. Andrés Guardado converted the penalty, and he added another in the first half of extra time to secure the victory for El Tri. All three of Mexico’s goals in the knockout stage have come from the penalty spot, meaning the country has not scored from open play in over 240 minutes of action. Head coach Miguel Herrera and his squad are in a great position to win the Gold Cup, but they will want to win against Jamaica in emphatic fashion in order to quell doubts over the legitimacy of their title. Jamaica enters the Final coming off of an impressive 2-1 victory over the United States. The Reggae Boyz were much stronger than their opponents in the first half, and used goals from Darren Mattocks and Giles Barnes to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. Michael Bradley quickly drew one back in the 48th minute, but Jamaica was able to weather the storm and leave Atlanta with a 2-1 win. Many pundits are calling this win a huge upset, but Jamaica deserves more credit than it is currently receiving. The country had an impressive showing at the Copa América, losing all three of its games by a narrow margin of 1-0, including outings against South American giants Argentina and Uruguay, and is now undefeated at the Gold Cup. Jamaica has won its last four games in regulation time, and is primed to win its first ever Gold Cup title. Given Mexico’s struggles on offense and the low-scoring nature of the tournament thus far, expect under 2.5 goals to be scored. Mexico is a much bigger name in the world of international soccer than is Jamaica, but current form indicates that Jamaica has a great chance to win this match, perhaps by a score of 1-0.

MLB Sunday Scouting Report
10:10 am Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays
Matt Moore Tries to Find His Groove
The Rays Matt Moore has struggled since returning from Tommy John surgery. The results have not been pretty. After 4 starts, Moore is 1-1 with an era of 7.23. Matt has pitched 18 2/3 innings and been blasted for 25 hits and 15 earned runs. Moore’s biggest problem is his lack of command. Moore has walked 10 and struck out 11. His whip is 1.88. Moore’s career numbers are just fine. He has gone 30-18 with a 3.72 era. He’s walked 175 and fanned 350 in 365 2/3 innings. It is clear that Moore’s control has left him at least in his 4 games back. Matt Weiters is hitting .574 against Moore. Adam Jones is at .474 and Manny Machado is hitting .300 lifetime vs Moore. The Rays Moore has yet to extend past 5 innings and in his last start vs the Phillies he lasted 4 2/3 innings allowing 5 hits, 4 runs while walking 3 and striking out 3.
10:10 am Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians
Rodon’s Control Issues Could Be Costly to Chisox
Since May 5, Carlos Rodon has walked more batters than any other major league pitcher. Relying on his slider proved difficult for Rodon who has now developed a change that will hopefully fix his control issues. Rodon is 3-3 on the year with a 4.48 era. His whip is 1.62. Rodon is 0-1 with a 5.23 era and a 1. 86 whip. Rodon has given up 44 free passes this year against 74 strike outs. In his past 3 games he has gone 0-2 with a 6/00 era and a 1.733 whip. Spotlighting his control problems, Rodon has walked 13 batters in his last 15 innings.
10:10 am Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets
Don’t Look for Offense in This Battle
The total set at 6 tells you all you need to know about this contest. You’ve got two tope of the line pitchers going against relatively cold offenses. The Mets are only averaging 2.7 runs per game in their last 7. The Dodgers average 4.3 runs per game but have scored more than 4 runs in only 3 of their last 9. Zack Greinke brings his 43 2/3 scoreless streak to New York. Zack is 9-2 on the year with 1.20 era. Obviously his era is 0.00 for his last 43 2/3 innings. Jacob DeGrom goes to the hill for the Mets and he has been almost as stingy. DeGrom is 10-6 with an era of 2.18. Both pitchers have whips under 2.00. DeGrom has a 1.67 era at home. DeGrom hasn’t had much success against LA going 0-2 with a 6.00 era. Greinke has a 2.45 era vs the Mets and a 3-1 record. Greinke shut out the Mets for 7 innings on 4 hits earlier in the year.
1:10 pm Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners
Horribly Inconsistent Walker Tests Ultra Consistent Buehrle
Taijuan Walker has had his ups and downs this season. The problem is there is no sign of what is to come from him on any given day. Mark Buehrle, on the other hand, has been about as steady as a pitcher can be. From June 10 to July 1, Walker was one of the league’s best pitchers. He went 5-0 with a 1.67 era during that time. But since then Walker has gone 0-2 with a 9.39 era in 3 starts. Beuhrle’s era in his last 3 is 1.23. Buehrle has been excellent throughout the season. He hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any of his starts since May 29. Mark has gone at least 7 innings in 8 of his last 9 starts. Buehrle is 11-5 on the year with a 3.23 era while Walker is 7-7 with a 5.08 era. Mark is 8-4 with a 3.63 era against the M’s. Walker is 0-2 with a 3.29 era vs Toronto.
5:08 pm Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox
Tigers, BoSox May Finally Find the Zone at Fenway
After a 2-1 win on Friday Boston dropped Saturday’s tilt 5-1. A total of 9 runs doesn’t seem like much especially with the high era pitchers that have gone against one another. A different scenario, one where double digit runs are scored, may be on the agenda today when 2 pitchers who were shelled last out tangle. The Tigers send out Shane Greene who sits at 4-7 with a 6.52 era. In his last start Greene was smashed for 5 runs on 6 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Not only did Greene get rocked for 5 runs, several of the outs were hard hit balls. In his last 7 starts Greene is 0-5 with a 10.09 era. Boston counters with Eduardo Rodriguez who is 5-3 with a 4.64 era. In his last start, Rodriguez was tagged for 6 hits and 7 runs in only 1 2/3 frames. Rodriguez’s era for his last 3 is 6.92 and Greene’s is 12.40. The total for this contest opened at 9.5 but I have a feeling it will hit double digits before it goes.

Philly has been outscored on the road this year, 5.44-to-3.26 RPG, making this a perfect spot to lay the 1 1/2 runs with a pitcher who has posted excellent numbers (despite modest results), all season-long.

MLB Game: New York Yankees (971) @ Minnesota Twins (972)
Time: Sunday 07/26 2:10 PM Eastern
Pick: New York -119 (moneyline) at Americasbookie
After Saturday’s 8-5 win, the Yankees improved to 13-5 in July. This offense has been strong all season, ranked second in baseball in runs scored. New York is on a 5-1 run, 8-2 in their last 10 games as chalk. Hard throwing Nathan Eovaldi (9-2) goes for the Bronx Bombers, and the Yankees are 7-1 when he is a favorite. While New York is ninth in baseball in on-base percentage on offense, Minnesota ranks 24th. The Twins took the first game of the series 10-1 on Friday, but are losers of five of eight since the All-Star break. Twins starter Kyle Gibson was ripped by the Angels his last start for six runs and 10 hits in five innings. Gibson has not had much success against New York, going 1-2 with 17 runs allowed and 22 hits in 12+ innings. The Twins are 8-20 when Gibson faces a team with a winning record, and New York is 41-15 vs Minnesota, so jump on the visitors. Play the New York Yankees.

Play on Game #967/968 Baltimore/Tampa Bay – OVER the TOTAL (2:10 PM EST)
I think this Total of 7 runs is a little too low with these pitchers on the mound. Chen has a 12K/ 5 BB mark vs. the Rays this season. He has allowed 17 hits in 17.1 IP. So I’m expecting the Rays to reach base off of him and manufacture runs. Moore has been terrible for the Rays since returning to the rotation. Yes, he has a 7.23 ERA in his 4 starts this season with a 11K/10 BB mark. Neither pitcher strikes out a lot of guys and neither is known for going deep into games, thus I expect the bullpens to be called on early in this one. Moore’s last start vs. the Orioles was in 2013, but he gave up 12 hits and 9 runs. Current members of the Orioles are hitting .327 vs. him. Current members of the Rays are hitting .282 vs. Chen.
I know both offenses have been struggling as of late. I also know the UNDER is 2-0 in this series. I will note though that the OVER is 3-1-1 in the Orioles L5 during Game 3 of a series and the OVER is 4-1-2 in the Orioles L7 during game 3 of a series. The OVER is 5-1 in Chens L6 road starts vs. the Rays and the OVER is 4-0-1 in Moore’s L5 home starts with the total set at 7-8.5 Take the OVER!
Play on Game #953/954 Wash/Pitt – UNDER the TOTAL (2:35 PM EST)
Joe Ross for the Nationals has a 27K/ 2 BB mark on the season now in 4 starts, including an 11K/ 1 BB outing vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 19th. The rookie has excellent command and will be facing one of the NL’s best in Gerrit Cole for Pittsburgh as I expect this to be a true pitcher’s duel. In 2 career starts vs. the Nationals, Cole has a 2.08 ERA and the UNDER is 2-0. Cole has a 1.96 ERA in day games this season and I look for this one to end with a final score in the 3-2 range on Sunday. Take the UNDER!
Play on Game #952 NY Mets w/ DeGrom (1:10 PM EST)
I like the Mets here as a homedog. DeGrom is the Mets ace this year and I think the situation favors him against Greinke. Greinke had his scheduled start pushed back as he had to fly back to LA for the birth of his child. I have to think that this threw him out of his normal routine and I also think he will have some other thoughts floating in his head while on the mound. Greinke hasn’t allowed a run in 6 starts now and I don’t like betting against stats like this, but naturally he is due for a bad start. DeGrom for the Mets has a 0.90 WHIP on the season and a 20K/ 3 BB for the month of July. He has a 1.67 ERA at home so we are getting a pitcher that can be completely dominant as well as a homedog.
The Mets are 12-4 on Sundays this season, including 4-0 in DeGrom’s L4 Sunday starts and are 23-9 in Day games. The Mets are also 4-0 in DeGrom’s L4 starts vs. the NL West and getting them as a homedog is a bargain in this game. The offense has momentum after smacking around the Dodgers last night for 21 runs. Take the Mets!

Analysis: Feeling good about today and going forward – and since I do believe the Rays gets their three at home, I will take them as the home dog not to lose the series as well.
I decided to do the degenerate thing, too. Three home teams on the RL, one or two of which may win the game, with the Red Sox tonight – if I am lucky enough to get the early ones – great opps later with the Tigers, perhaps. I don’t play these huge – they’re not 6.5:1, in this case, for no reason.
