Game of the Day: Lightning at Rangers

** Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers (-150, 5)

GAME  7 – Series tied 3-3

The New York Rangers have fought off elimination four times in this season’s playoffs and can secure a return trip to the Stanley Cup final when they host the visiting Tampa Bay Lighting on Friday night. The Rangers erupted for a postseason-high seven goals in Game 6 to bring the Eastern Conference final back to Madison Square Garden, where they are 7-0 all-time in Game 7 matchups.

“Every time we’re in an elimination game, that’s the way we play,” said New York forward Derick Brassard, who scored a hat trick and amassed five points in Tuesday’s 7-3 romp. “We’re just going to go out there at home and try to play our best game.” Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 36 saves in Game 6 and enters the winner-take-all matchup with a 15-3 in his last 18 elimination games. The Lightning blanked the Rangers 2-0 at Madison Square Garden in Game 5 but have allowed at least five goals in three of their last four contests. Tampa Bay forward Alex Killorn was unfazed by New York’s perfect home mark in Game 7s, saying: “I guess that means they’re due to lose one.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA

LINE HISTORY: The opening moneyline saw the Rangers at -144 but has been bet to -150. The opening total of 5 has yet to shift.

INJURY REPORT: Lightning – C Tyler Johnson (Prob-Flu), LW Ondrej Palat (Prob-Flu), Cedric Paquette (Ques-Arm) Rangers – LW Mats Zuccarello (Ques-Upper Body)

WHAT BOOKS SAY: “We felt we had to be generous with the Rangers moneyline because we knew that would be the popular side, and we’ve still had to adjust the price higher. I think it all comes down to whether or not Bishop can bounce back and continue his excellent play on the road. History favors New York but history is made to be broken. It’s been a very unpredictable series and this game, as with many Game 7’s in hockey, truly feels like a tossup.” – John Lester, Senior Lines Manager at Bookmaker.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Tampa Bay did manage to win Games 6 and 7 in its first-round matchup against Detroit, but they need to find a way to get the “Triplets” line of Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov going. Although Kucherov scored twice in Game 6 on a pair of assists by Johnson, the unit has produced six points in the last three contests after dominating the first half of the series by coming for eight goals and eight assists in the first three games. A flu bug that had been affecting the Lightning seems to have subsided, but they need a better outing from Ben Bishop, who allowed a goal on the first shot he faced in Game 6 and was eventually pulled after surrendering five goals for the third time in four starts.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Brassard had scored just one goal in his previous eight games before notching his first career hat trick and becoming the third player in franchise history to collect five points in a playoff contest. Rick Nash, a 42-goal scorer during the regular season who drew a ton of criticism after tallying only twice in the first 15 games of the postseason, has come alive with three goals and four assists over the past three games. Still, the fortunes of the Presidents’ Trophy winners will likely hinge on the performance of Lundqvist, who set the tempo in Game 6 with 15 first-period saves and has been victorious in his last six Game 7s while posting a .973 saves percentage and microscopic 0.81 goals-against average.

TRENDS:

*Lightning are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in New York.

*Rangers are 10-2 in their last 12 when their opponent allows 5 goals or more in their previous game.

*Under is 11-4-1 in Lightning last 16 road games.

*Over is 12-3-3 in Rangers last 18 after scoring 5 goals or more in their previous game.

CONSENSUS: 68.8 percent are backing the Rangers with 56 percent on the over.

2014-15 NHL EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS GAME 7

Ranger goalie Lundqvist won his last six Game 7’s, an NHL record. Rangers lost six of last nine games with Tampa Bay; they scored five goals in third period Tuesday as they evened series with third straight win in series by road team- eight of last eleven series games went over total. Rangers are 7-20 on power play in last five games, Lightning 6-18. There were 66 faceoffs in Game 6 after 39 in Game 5; more stoppages appears to help NY. Four of last five games were decided by more than one goal. Extra day between games should make this a faster, more physical game. Rangers lost last two home games; Tampa Bay split last four on road.

Five To Follow MLB Betting: Friday, May 29, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

Interesting news out of New York this week as the Mets have decided to go to a six-man rotation in order to keep the innings down on the season for young right-handers Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. Pitching coach Dan Warthen indicated the Mets likely will stick with that extra starter in the rotation through early-to-mid-August. So that means the Mets will have a very thin bench for position players (probably four, and one has to be a backup catcher) for a few months. They better hope for no 18-inning games. It’s not a big deal in September when rosters can be expanded. It was either move to a six-man group or Mets manager Terry Collins told that trio he would start yanking them after five innings. Or they were each going on the disabled list for a few weeks at different times. I guess this is smarter than just ending the season off Harvey in September like Washington did with Stephen Strasburg three years ago, then that blew up in the Nats’ faces when they lost in the playoffs to St. Louis.

♦ Marlins at Mets (-176, 6.5)

It’s not a shock the Mets made this decision this week because last time out Harvey (5-2, 2.91) had the worst start of his career, allowing seven runs in four innings against the Pirates. The team said after he was suffering from a “dead arm.” Harvey threw his normal bullpen session Tuesday without issue and thus will be good to go here. He pitched at home against Miami on April 19 and had his second-worst start of the season, allowing four runs and eight hits over six innings but still got the win. Giancarlo Stanton is 1-for-9 with four strikeouts off him. Marcell Ozuna has had some success, going 4-for-9 with a triple and two RBIs. It’s Dan Haren (4-2, 3.09) for Miami. He has allowed two combined runs over 14 innings in his past two outings. He hasn’t faced the Mets this year. Michael Cuddyer struggles with Haren, batting .194 with 11 strikeouts in 31 at-bats. Curtis Granderson has three homers but 16 Ks in 39 at-bats.

Key trends: The Marlins are 1-9 in their past 10 after a loss. They are 1-7 in their past eight road games vs. teams with a winning record. The Mets are 4-0 in Harvey’s past four against teams with a losing record. The “over/under” has hit under in six of Harvey’s past eight with five days of rest. The over is 9-1 in the past 10 meetings in New York.

Early lean: Mets and under.

♦ Rays at Orioles (-128, 8)

Tampa is hoping to have two injured players back in this one in outfielder: Steven Souza (wrist) and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (groin). Souza hasn’t played since May 24 while Cabrera has been limited to pinch-hitting the past few games. This is the first time these teams have played in Baltimore this season but not the first time the Orioles were the home club. The teams played in Florida May 1-3 because of the civil disobedience in Baltimore. The Orioles batted last in those three games and won two. Nathan Karns (3-2, 3.71) gets the call for Tampa. He is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season. Chris Davis has a homer in five at-bats off him. Adam Jones is 3-for-7 with a double and two RBIs. Baltimore’s Miguel Gonzalez (5-3, 3.83) has struggled in three of four starts this month with a 4.15 May ERA. He is 1-1 with a 0.68 ERA in two starts vs. Tampa. Souza is 1-for-5 with two strikeouts against him.

Key trends: The Rays are 0-5 in their past five against teams with a losing record. The Orioles are 4-1 in their past five series openers. The under is 5-1 in the past six meetings in Baltimore.

Early lean: Orioles and over.

♦ Dodgers at Cardinals (-122, 7.5)

The Cardinals will be without first baseman Matt Adams for perhaps the rest of the season as he was placed on the 15-day DL with a torn quad. He will undergo surgery on Friday. Adams was hitting .243 with four homers and 20 RBIs. Mark Reynolds will take over full time at first base, but the Cards are going to have to make a deal because Reynolds shouldn’t be an every-day player. This is the first meeting of the teams since last year’s NLDS, won by St. Louis. And it should have live betting at the sportsbooks as it’s televised by the MLB Network. How good has the Dodgers’ Mike Bolsinger (3-0, 0.71) been? This was a guy designated for assignment by Arizona after last season. He hasn’t allowed more than a run in four starts in 2015. Bolsinger has never faced St. Louis. The Cardinals’ John Lackey (2-3, 3.18) will be happy to be home because his past three have been on the road and the Cards lost them all. He has a 1.63 home ERA. Adrian Gonzalez hits .353 off him with four RBIs in 17 at-bats.

Key trend: The Dodgers have won six straight Friday games. The Cards are 9-1 in Lackey’s past 10 at home. The under is 6-0 in his past six overall.

Early lean: Cardinals and under.

♦ Nationals at Reds (+133, 7.5)

Cincinnati believes second baseman Brandon Phillips will be back in the lineup Friday. He hasn’t started since Monday because he aggravated a turf toe injury. Phillips is batting .297 with two homers and 18 RBIs. Phillips is 3-for-10 in his career off Washington starter Stephen Strasburg (3-5, 6.50), who continues to be the weak link of the Nats’ rotation. He was rocked again last time out, lasting only 3.2 innings against the Phillies and allowing six runs and seven hits. Odd because he is still throwing as hard as ever. Marlon Byrd hits .316 with a homer and six RBIs against him. Cincinnati’s Anthony DeSclafani (2-4, 3.46) comes off one of his best starts, holding the Indians to a run and three hits over seven innings. Washington’s Bryce Harper is 1-for-1 off him.

Key trends: The Nats are 7-1 in their past eight series openers. They are 0-4 in Strasburg’s past four against teams with a losing record. The Reds have lost nine straight against right-handers. The over is 5-0 in Strasburg’s past five on the road.

Early lean: As of this writing, the Reds are the only home dogs on the board. And I’m taking them because Strasburg is still being overvalued. Go over.

♦ Diamondbacks at Brewers (-130, 8.5)

Sad-sack Milwaukee will activate shortstop Jean Segura off the disabled list on Friday. He has been out since May 12 with a finger injury. Segura is hitting .262 with 12 RBIs and six steals. Segura will get his first career look at Diamondbacks starter Rubby De La Rosa (4-2, 4.27). He allowed four runs over six innings last time out in a no-decision against the Cubs. De La Rosa is 1-2 with a 4.39 ERA on the road this season and has never faced Milwaukee. Adam Lind has and is 2-for-5 with a double. Milwaukee’s Jimmy Nelson (2-5, 3.67) is getting better as he has allowed three runs over 13.2 innings in his past two starts — both on the road. He is 1-2 with a 2.83 ERA at home. Nelson has never faced an Arizona hitter in the majors.

Key trends: Arizona is 1-4 in its past five after an off day. The Brewers are 0-5 in Nelson’s past five series openers. The over is 8-2 in Milwaukee’s past 10 at home against right-handers.

Early lean: Brewers and over.

Pirates extend winning streak to seven as pitchers shine
By Justin Hartling

The Pittsburgh Pirates won their seventh consecutive game Thursday with little signs of slowing down. In an 11-5 victory over the San Diego Padres the Bucs scored more runs in a single game than they have all season prior to Thursday.

During their seven game winning streak the Pirates starting pitchers are a combined 7-0 with a 1.95 ERA. Only once during their winning streak has Pittsburgh allowed more than two runs to an opponent.

This is the Pirates longest winning streak since they rattled off nine consecutive W’s in June, 2013.

The weekend series between the Pirates and Padres will continue Friday, with Pittsburgh currently +105 dogs at Petco Park.

Mets undefeated when Harvey starts at Citi Field
Justin Hartling

It’s Harvey Day Friday, which means that the New York Mets will be looking to extend their winning streak at home with Matt Harvey starts. The Mets are 4-0 this season when the right-hander takes the bump in Citi Field this season.

Harvey has posted a 2.33 ERA with a stellar 27/2 strikeout/walk ratio in 27 innings of work at home this season.

The Mets host division-rival Miami Marlins Friday.

French Open WTA Sam Stosur- Maria Sharapova

Both players after slow career starts in Paris have learned to not only thrive at, but to love Roland Garros. Sam Stosur is a three time semi finalist here and was big odds on favourite in the 2010 final, but lost out to Francesca Schiavone. Masha has appeared in the last three finals at RG and is a two time winner and defending champion and those are words I never expected to be typing, but we have to now consider her a clay court champion, but if I am being honest, I still have a problem with that. However, she has a 14-2 lifetime record against the 31 yo Australian and should win today, but their last two meetings on the surface that were not played in Madrid ( we discussed the non-clay like surface there earlier in the week) have gone the distance, the first of those to 7-5 in the third and Stosur was well on top in the second, which came in R4 last year. Stosur’s kick serve has been wildly successful, especially at RG, but is less effective against Sharapova, given her height and huge reach, but in the last couple of year’s Stosur has added more variety to her serve and that might be the reason it has been a little more effective against the Russian superstar in recent meetings on the surface. Given that and the fact that Stosur is in much better form coming in this year, winning Strasbourg and only dropping five games in winning her two opening matches, I like the underdog to again take a set.

Samantha Stosur +1.5 sets 2.02.

NEWSLETTER  MLB Baseball Prediction From Robert Ferringo

Take’Over’ 8.0 Washington at Cincinnati (7 p.m., Friday, May 29)

We should expect more the same from Stephen Strasburg in this Friday game. And that’s to say we should expect him to get lit up. He has a 6.50 ERA this year, and he is shot. The stuff just isn’t there any more. He has lost velocity, and his fastball is dead flat. We’ve seen this happen to Cy Young-caliber arms before (Tim Lincecum went through a three-year period where he was pretty bad, for example) and right now it is happening to Strasburg. The Reds could go a few different ways with their starter on Friday, but I don’t think it will matter the way the Nats have been hitting the ball this May. They’ll probably be going with Raisel Iglesias, but he is nothing more than a spot starter, and he allowed seven base runners in three innings in his start on Sunday. Washington should chew him up. The Nationals are 9-4 against the total against a righty, and I see them sailing whatever this number is – it should be around 8.0 or 8.5 – on Friday to open the series.

NEWSLETTER MLB Baseball Prediction From Jason Sharpe

Take #971 Chicago White Sox (+130) over Houston (8 p.m., Friday, May 29)

Going to get some extreme value here in this one as the Chicago White Sox send left-hander Jose Quintana to the hill. Quintana had his red-hot stretch of five straight starts allowing just two earned runs or less come to end his last time out as the Minnesota Twins hit him hard. This is nothing against Quintana, though, as the Twins offense has been very good against lefties the last two years. The White Sox come out of the AL Central, which has been easily the best division in MLB this season so far as they’ve owned the teams from the AL West and especially so when they been on the road as well. The Houston Astros have been one of the big stories to start this 2015 season, which has caused them to become an overvalued team these days. The Astros still have one of the worst offenses in all of baseball as they rank towards the bottom of the league in batting average. They’ve also won a very high percentage of one-run games thus far, which is unsustainable going forward. They will go with rookie 21 year-old Lance McCullers here in this one. McCullers was brought up from AA ball a few starts back, which is a huge jump that most guys fail to make. Though he pitched well down in the minors, the promotion had more to do with him being brought up to fill in for an injured Houston Astros starter. Were going to get a great price on the usually consistent Quintana here against a below-average offense and an unproven youngster on the mound. Take the Chicago White Sox here.

Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez is 3-0 at home with a 2.93 ERA and the Orioles are really starting to heat up. Money is basically 50/50 on this game but Vegas is starting to pay more and more for Rays money telling us the sharp money is backing the Orioles here. Take the Orioles for a 10* winner.
