In 2013, a hopeless pit bull wandered onto the porch of 23-year-old Nashville resident Christianna Willis. It just so happened Christianna worked at an animal hospital. She knew right away this pit bull was abused, battered, and had been living a complete nightmare.
Christianna took the dog in for the night and named her Mama Jade. In addition to the injuries Mama Jade sustained while being tied up and used as a breeding dog (like when she looked into Jade’s mouth and realized her teeth had been deliberately pulled out so she couldn’t fight back) the vets diagnosed her with breast cancer. Christianna wrote a heartfelt and defiant Craigslist post in defense of the poor dog. She explained how infuriated she was at the person who did this to her, and that Mama Jade’s story had to be told. At first, she said she was preparing to put Mama Jade to sleep; it seemed to be the most humane decision, considering the dog’s condition and the high price of canine cancer treatment. She’d ensure, however, that Jade’s final day on earth would be comfortable and compassionate. But then, something incredible happened.
As it turned out, her public response went viral, leading Christianna to set up a fund to pay for the dog’s cancer treatment, ultimately saving her life. Mama Jade’s story was told on news stations across the country, shedding light on the stigma attached to pit bulls and the cruel ways in which innocent dogs are treated every day. Though Mama Jade’s cancer has since returned, her past two years have been rich with love. She continues to bring joy to Christianna’s life and the lives of everyone she meets. “She’s enjoying life and living it to the fullest,” Christianna says. Her appetite is still strong and her soul is even stronger.”

The pressure wounds on her elbows that bled whenever they touched anything, from being tied and forced to lay on cement ground and metal cage mesh.”

“None of those things are even the worst part. Upon examining her teeth to gauge her approximate age, I burst into tears. I found that you had pulled the majority of them out and the ones you left, had been filed down. And you did this without anaesthesia, this I am sure of. You did this so she couldn’t fight back. You did this so she couldn’t injure any dogs you had trained to fight, when you threw her in there with them. With each bite of her they took and each yelp she cried, they’d look at you for reassurance. Because all they wanted to do was please you. Loyalty is in their blood. Violence is not.”

“We’re all amazed at how trusting of humans she is. Dogs however, completely terrify her. It doesn’t matter the size, she growls in fear and tucks her tail between her legs. But who can blame her? After what you did to her? Tomorrow, Mama will finally feel peace. And when she closes her eyes and takes her last breath, I’ll be there. I’ll hold her big ol head and I’ll tell her how much I love her. And when her soul has left her battered body and I’ve dried the tears enough to see, I will document every bruise, every bite, every cut, scrape and gash. I’ll photograph her teeth, or rather, where her teeth used to be. I’ll turn in all the evidence and post it where EVERYONE will see it. I’ll use it to educate kids in heavily crime ridden areas, on the horrors of dog fighting.”

“If you could do that to a dog, you should not be allowed in everyday society. And teaching our children right from wrong is the only way to put a stop to this. One day, you will be caught. **UPDATE** “Never would I have thought my Craigslist post about Mama Jade would go completely viral. I posted it last night, expecting to receive maybe a few emails about it but nothing huge. Today I have received LITERALLY thousands of emails from people all around the United States. My iPhone crashes every time I try to check my mailbox. The response has been overwhelming and has restored a lot of my faith in humanity. Many people and charities have asked if they could donate funds for Mama to get the treatment for her cancer. Tonight I’ll do my best to review as many of the emails as possible and I’ll make a decision on what the best route to take will be. One thing is for certain though, Mama Jade is getting yet another chance at life.”
