WITH the holidays fast approaching, the internet is filling up with all manner of Christmas guides from how to cook the perfect turkey to how to prepare the perfect hamper. For something a little different, we’ve put together this guide to winter in Asia. If you’re planning to escape the traditional celebrations, why not travel to one of these great destinations and experience something new?

Hong Kong

From its Christmas church services to its towering evergreen trees and dazzling light displays, Hong Kong celebrates the holidays in style. Throughout December, visitors can enjoy the annual event known as WinterFest. It covers much of the city with many of the large malls transformed into winter wonderlands complete with festive fairgrounds and daily performances from local singers. Be sure to stay for the grand finale which sees a spectacular firework display bring in the New Year.

Philippines

With one of the largest populations of Catholics in Asia, it’s no surprise that the Filipinos love to celebrate Christmas. The best of East meets West with a combination of native and traditional customs. You’ll find Santa Claus and carols as well as traditions unique to the country such as ‘parol’ – a popular decoration consisting of a colored bamboo pool with a lighted star lantern. On the big day, many Filipinos open their home to family and neighbors with a celebration and feast. Roasted pig known as lechon accompanied by steamed rice is a great alternative to the dry turkey and soggy potatoes.

Singapore

The high end retailers and boutiques of the exclusive Orchard Road are beautifully lit during the holiday season. With many shops offering discounts during Christmas, it’s a great time to treat yourself or your loved ones. Aside from the glittering lights, you can also indulge in the world class cuisine. Many restaurants serve up their own take on the traditional Christmas meal, where turkey is spiced with ginger, garlic and plenty of chili.

Japan

The Japanese may not have a long history of celebrating Christmas but in recent years, many have adopted the traditions of the west. In Tokyo, you’ll find much of the festivities centered on Christmas Eve which is considered a day for couples to rekindle romance. Presents are exchanged on Christmas day and there’s a bizzare spin on the family meal. Fried chicken is the popular choice, with many heading to fast food chain KFC on the big day!

South Korea

The cold winter climate of South Korea’s capital, Seoul is a beautiful setting to enjoy the holidays. If you’re lucky this lively metropolis may even get a light dusting of snow. With a large population of Christians, there’s an official public holiday with big events throughout the month of December. Aside from the nightlife, there’s a great selection of shops and Christmas markets in the student area of Sinchon. It’s the perfect place to find hand crafted goods, souvenirs and even vintage clothing.

A Christmas spent in Asia doesn’t have to sacrifice all those traditions you love. You’ll experience a new culture and be guaranteed an unforgettable holiday.
