Canada as a Cultural Mosaic

In 2012, Statistics Canada announced that Canada’s population had reached 35 million, signifying the fastest growth rate of any G8 nation. The main drivers of population growth in Canada are immigration and to a lesser extent, natural growth. Canada has one of the highest per-capita immigration rates in the developed world, and immigration continues to be an important facet of Canadian culture. Statistics Canada recently projected that within the next twenty years, population growth could rely almost entirely on migratory increase. These statistics, coupled with the launch of several new immigration programs (Express Entry, Parent and Grandparent Program and the Immigrant Investor Venture Capital Pilot Program) by Citizenship and Immigration Canada have increased the need for registered Immigration Consultants in Canada.

Immigration Consultants in Canada

Immigration matters can often be complex, stressful, and difficult to comprehend, with some applications taking months or even years to complete. The role of an Immigration Consultant in Canada is to act as an adviser to potential immigrants by providing assistance in navigating the immigration system and ensuring that they comply with and meet the legal requirements of the Canadian Immigration System. Immigration Consultants assist clients in choosing the best immigration stream, prepare applications and supporting documents, and advocate on behalf of clients at hearings and appeals.

There are approximately 2,500 Immigration Consultants in Canada. The primary course of source of employment for Immigration Consultants is as a sole-practitioner. Positions are also available in many different areas including law offices, human resources departments, international organizations, community services, and legal departments in various associations and businesses.

Immigration Consultants in Canada are regulated by the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC), the national regulatory authority designated by the Government of Canada to safeguard consumers who seek Canadian immigration advice and representation from immigration consultants. Federal law requires that immigration consultants in Canada or abroad, who provide Canadian immigration services for a fee, must be registered with ICCRC and accredited as Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants. To become certified as an Immigration Consultant, individuals must graduate from an accredited immigration practitioner’s program and successfully pass the ICCRC’s entry-to-practice Full Skills Exam (FSE).
