Introduction
Introduction
Arosia is actually a name I invented, but it's not difficult to distinguish its origin, which is the character Arsia from Tales of Phantasia. This was intentional, as Arsia's story shares many correlations with my own. I used to own the game, and I enjoyed playing as Mint Adenade. The characters I choose to play as may seem different, but I always play as my favorites, who are always female and commonly healers. I also like my username because of the first part, Aro, resembling the sound the word arrow makes. Archery is my favorite combat style in many games, mainly because I see archers as a dual role. On one hand, archery is associated with hunting, which, by extension, is historically associated with masculine roles. On the other hand, I feel as if archers are also supportive in combat, aiding frontliners by attacking from afar; in this respect, I view the role as more feminine. This duality is why I love playing as female archers, and I name my favorites below! Other than video games, I enjoy drama films, romantic novels, and rock music. I have a passion for fiction and fantasy, which is why I fell in love with the series and essentially RPGs in general.

I invented the name Arosia through the character Arsia from Tales of Phantasia due to her story being similar to my own. I actually don't own the game anymore, but when I did, I enjoyed playing as Mint Adenade. The characters I choose to play as may seem different, but I always play as my favorites, who are strictly female and commonly healers or archers (or both!). Other than video games, I enjoy drama films, romantic novels, and rock music. I have a passion for fiction and fantasy, which is why I fell in love with the series and essentially RPGs in general. In the Tales series, I actually prefer the older names to the newer ones. I currently own six games in the series:

I may own and play a variety of games, but I only keep my favorites. I love to get rid of things I don't want, need, or in these cases, intend to play anymore. This is really why I got rid of Phantasia. Adorable game, but one playthrough is good enough for me. To be honest, I'm not crazy about the story. I also used to own Tales of Vesperia, but got rid of it because I found myself not interested in playing it anymore and not using that damn Xbox 360 for anything else. Plus, I really just prefer the older games, with Abyss being my most recent favorite and a pinnacle of success. Vesperia is a nice game, though. Excellent visual quality, engaging battle system, and interesting characters. The story is, without a doubt, the game's weak point. It's not bad, but it's not good either. The graphics are beautiful and clear, even anime-esque, and still the best thus far, in my opinion. The game has quite a lot to offer, and I thoroughly enjoyed the guild system aspect. What I loathed was the lack of being able to fully venture into the towns and cities, as many are quite breathtaking. I always found myself wanting more, and just as I feel with all the other games, I wish there really were more. I'm sad when I beat a game; it's like finishing a book or television series. Anyway, I played as Judith because sexiness. No really, I genuinely like Judith and her adorable (sexy at the same time) naivete.

I have a Japanese PlayStation 2 for the first four and an English one for the last two. No, I do not know Japanese. I use translation scripts I found online for Destiny, Destiny 2, and Rebirth. As for Symphonia, I first owned the English GameCube version, and I beat it so many times that I essentially have the script memorized. I like how the PlayStation 2 version offers a lot more, however. As far as the scripts are concerned, I used this for Destiny, this for Destiny 2, and this for Rebirth.

The remake of Destiny is great, and the Director's Cut features make it all the more worthwhile. There's also plenty of characters to play as! I play as Mary Argent in the beginning because she's my favorite, but I switch to Chelsea Torn later because I'm too much of a sucker for archers! The battle system in this game is actually one of my favorites. Destiny 2 is a wonderful sequel to Destiny, adding to the story yet not greatly affecting it due to time-traveling shenanigans. In Destiny, I like Mary for her personality and Chelsea for her fighting style. In Destiny 2, I play as Nanaly Fletcher due to her personality and fighting style. The battle system in this game is different from the others in the series, but it's tolerable. Symphonia has a really innovative battle system, however. Definitely one of my favorites, Symphonia was the first Tales game I ever played. I play as Raine Sage, mostly casting spells and healing the party. I also really like Raine's mother-like personality, so I would consider her my favorite overall. The graphics in this game made a major leap from previous titles, and there's not just one world to explore—there's two!

When I invested in a Japanese PlayStation 2, Tales of Destiny (Director's Cut) was one of the games I was able to get for it, using the somewhat disappointing Destiny remake translation script. I was impressed with the remade quality of the game, as well as all the Director's Cut features. Its story is certainly a step up from Phantasia, and there's more characters to play as. I feel the development for some of the characters was a little lacking, but I find nearly all of them enjoyable. While I had initially planned on playing as Rutee Katrea, I found myself drawn to Mary Argent's personality more and more. Despite this, I couldn't get used to playing as Mary, so I stuck with Rutee for a while, eventually switching to Chelsea Torn because I just can't control my love for archers! Rutee isn't bad, but I think I'll stick with Mary and Chelsea from now on; Mary will make a good substitute until Chelsea joins permanently. I love the graphics of the PlayStation 2 Tales games; they're so cute! I'm even fairly drawn to the battle systems over the more modern ones because they're so flashy! The music is also great. As for the story, it has its strong points and its weak points, but overall, I find it good. I would love to find some supplementary material about the game I can sink my teeth into.

Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia was my first game of the series to play, and as such, I maintain a certain nostalgia for it. For the longest, it was certainly my favorite, but things of this nature change, of course (^_^). The game's strongest element is undoubtedly its story, which I believe to be one of the strongest in the series as a whole. The characters are also nice and well-developed, and like Destiny, the game offers plenty of them to play as. I play as Raine Sage, sitting in the back while I cast spells and heal the party. I like Raine's mother-like personality, and healers have always been a favorite of mine. If I'm in the mood to engage in some close-combat, I'll switch over to Sheena Fujibayashi, who would probably be my more competitive option. The battle system is unique, consisting of a fairly large area to navigate and providing a big step forward in terms of mechanics. The graphics are beautiful, and I'm a sucker for aesthetics. I also tend to be a sucker for certain antagonists. In this game, I recognize that the majority of the Desian Grand Cardinals were developed to be unlikable, but I tend to sympathize with Pronyma. I like when a game has a small elite group that governs an organization or something of the like, and I particularly like when these elites have strong female characters. Not only is Pronyma the leader of this group, but she is smart, calculating, and ultimately cooperating for a cause in which she believes.

Tales of Rebirth
Tales of Rebirth intrigued me from when I first began researching it. It was one of the games I got when I bought a Japanese PlayStation 2, and I luckily found an awesome translation script for this one. I really enjoy this game, its story, its characters, and its innovative battle system. The story flows nicely, and I found myself surprised at several points in the game where the plot thickens. Sure, the story borrows from the racial theme of Symphonia, but it's certainly more developed here, as it contributes to the plot more. Also, this game takes the two major races and creates a dynamic with them that is represented through various themes, motifs, and symbolism in the game. I find this illustration an interesting alternative to the racial theme in Symphonia, which serves more as a motive for the antagonists rather than holding any sort of historical significance. Nonetheless, both stories are unique in their own way. The characters are likable, and it's one of the few games in the series where I really don't find any characters all that irritating. The protagonists are each unique in their own way, although the development for some is somewhat lacking. I play as Hilda Rhambling (only two playable female characters, really?), and I find Militsa of the Four Stars (female member of an elite group!) particularly appealing as an antagonist. Having lost my own mother, I was able to connect with Hilda on an emotional level, which made me enjoy playing as her even more. As far as the battle system is concerned, the 3-on-3 feature is neat; however, I found the Force Cube feature limited and confusing. I have to comment that the artwork for this game is beautiful, notably the Sacred Beasts.

Tales of Legendia
I was hesitant to play Tales of Legendia at first, knowing the battle system was not the best, and although I haven't had the time to complete the game yet (I will, though!), I have played and thoroughly enjoyed it. The battle system is definitely not as good as the ones in Symphonia and Rebirth; in fact, it's embarrassing. The number of dungeons and lack of towns/cities also bothers me, but it's certainly bearable. The simplistic names of many of the places is also irritating. Anyway! The game does have its strong points, however, with its strongest undoubtedly being its story and character development. Once the game begins progressing, the story gradually becomes more interesting, and the Character Quests offer an excellent development of the playable characters, as well as those involved in their lives. This game could have been so much more if not for its flaws, and a future remake could possibly rectify this. I won't get my hopes up, though. I played as Chloe Valens in the beginning, but I eventually switched to Norma Beatty. As far as antagonists go, Melanie is the only strong female one, and just as my fascination is concerned, she is part of an elite trio known as the Terrors.

Tales of the Abyss
+

Rebirth is another favorite, and the translation script for it is amazing—translated as if it were an actual localization. The story is great, and although it borrows the racial theme of Symphonia, here it's more developed, as it contributes to the plot significantly more. I play as Hilda Rhambling (only two playable female characters, really?), a mage with no healing capabilities, which is unusual for me. However, having lost my own mother, I was able to connect with Hilda on an emotional level, which made me enjoy playing as her even more. As far as the battle system is concerned, the 3-on-3 feature it neat, but I found the Force Cube limited and confusing. Finally, I have to comment that the artwork for this game is beautiful—notably the Sacred Beasts. Legendia is pretty decent, although its battle system is a slight regression. The story and character development are both good; I just wish the other aspects of the game were better. I play as Norma Beatty because I find her adorably amusing. Finally, Abyss is my favorite game—not only in the series but overall. The story, characters and battle system win it over for me. I play as Tear Grants in the beginning and later Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, my favorite character in the series. This game also has my favorite antagonist in the series, Legretta.

My absolute favorite game, not only in the series but overall, is Tales of the Abyss. I love this game. The story, characters, and battle system win it over for me. All of it is fantastic. Sure, it's Sony, so the loading time is a tad slow and the graphics may appears rough at time, but the good aspects of the game take away from these tiny flaws entirely. I am unable to begin to express how uniquely amazing and well-developed the story is, nor how in-depth the characters are. One of the game's greatest aspects is its battle system, which offers a flexible range of movement and interesting sub-features for altering artes. The game greatly develops not only its protagonists, but its antagonists as well, which left me sympathizing for them, as I've already stated is a commonality among these games for me. I play as Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, my favorite character in the series, and sometimes Tear Grants, my second favorite character in the series. This game also has my favorite antagonist in the series, Legretta, who is a strong female character part of an elite group of skilled combatants all fighting for a cause in which they believe. Could it get any better? The God-Generals are easily my favorite group of elites in the series. Not only does the game itself have so much to offer, but the lengthy animation (the longest in the series) stays true to the game and offers an alternative aesthetic experience. Also, who could forget about the wonderful timeline we have access to? There's so much to love and enjoy!
