The School of the Arts at Purchase College, SUNY, seeks candidates for a non tenure-track, full-time, 3-year renewable term Assistant Professor in the Practice of Music, with expertise in Jazz for the Conservatory of Music. Also to serve when appointed by the Director of the Conservatory as Head of Jazz Studies & Board of Study Coordinator. The position will begin the fall semester of 2015, and is subject to budgetary approval.
We seek practitioners in the field of Jazz with a national/international reputation and experience as a performer and/or composer-arranger at the highest level. Experience in directing and leading large jazz ensembles, together with demonstrated competence as an administrator, is essential. Teaching assignments will vary, but will likely include studio teaching in the area of expertise, jazz harmony/ear training and coaching combos. The ideal candidate will have college level administrative and teaching experience, as well as departmental-level leadership experience, as is often required of full-time faculty. Other duties will include student advising, recruitment, and representation on College committees.
As Head of Jazz Studies/Board of Study Coordinator, responsibilities will include overseeing the Jazz Studies curriculum, recommending jazz faculty assignments and adjunct hires to the Director, part-time faculty reviews, assigning students to faculty advisors, recommending scholarship allocation, overseeing outreach student performances, recruitment of students to the Jazz Studies program, and participating in fund raising events as required. The successful candidate will be expected to promote openness, transparency, equity, and fairness, in all policies & procedures and day-to-day business.
Other duties may include interacting with presenting venues on campus, including the Performing Arts Center and Neuberger Museum of Art. All faculty members at the College participate in academic advising and community service (which encompasses committee work as well as College, School, and Board of Study governance). As noted specifically above, leadership service to the division is an essential part of the positions future responsibilities.
Our ideal candidate will be comfortable working and thinking across genres in music and disciplines in the arts, having interests and experience that extend beyond his or her specialty, and encompass broader approaches to art practice and human knowledge. They will also have a broader interest in other forms of improvisational music in cultural and contemporary context, and demonstrate a commitment to student learning, success, and liberal education.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A graduate degree (MA, MM, MFA, DMA, PhD, EdD, etc.) in a related field or significant commensurate professional experience is required. In addition to this, a national/international profile of experience as a performer/arranger/scholar with an expertise in Jazz, is also required.
The successful candidate will also possess good communication and organizational skills, a proven ability to teach/mentor undergraduate and graduate students, the capacity to promote and contribute to a positive teaching & learning environment, the ability to solve day to day faculty and student issues, and the capacity to ensure the smooth running of the Jazz Studies program.
