2013-12-02

A lot of events coming to the city of Miami this Art Basel Week. This is the official Art of Miami To Do List for Art Basel Week 2013. Notice that Art Basel is not on the top 5.

1. Attend the opening of the new Perez Art Museum Miami

As a fellow artist and loyal resident of Miami- Dade I can speak for many in saying that for years Miami has eagerly anticipated the creation of a new Art Museum in Miami. Now, after all the waiting, that day has finally arrived and it is this Wednesday December 4th. The new PAMM opens its doors to the public just in time to welcome the Art Basel tourists in town and we will definitely be there. Best thing about it is that admission is free Opening Week. Dec. 4th to 8th to Miami-Dade residents.

2. The Paper Sculptures of Jen Stark @ Pulse Art Fair

Must See During Art Basel Weekend: Jen Stark @ Pulse Art Fair 12/4-12/9/2012

We are not just saying this because we are fans of Jen Stark. Well, actually yes. Jen Stark’s work has captivated our attention and has inspired many posts in our site. Since her departure from her native Miami to L.A, we and many others have craved the opportunity to view her colorful cosmic paper sculptures in person, once again. Don’t miss that chance during Art Basel Weekend at Martha Otero’s Gallery Space @ PULSE ART FAIR

 3. Check out the New Murals That Have Popped Up in Wynwood

Every year during Art Basel Week, Wynwood’s ever changing outdoor “mural museum” gets a face list. The atmosphere of excitement is contageous. This year expect lots of activity during Art Basel Week, as new murals pop up. Some of our beloved ones get replace or some times enhanced. For example the iconic “Boombox” mural that overlooks I-95 will be getting a facelift by creators Trek 6 and ChorBoogie. The “Boombox” got upgraded with an antenna and other details to catch your attention. So go see it in person. Look for Wynwood Walls getting some new additions to its collection. Like some “Guerilla Crochet” by famed Crochet Bomber Agata Olek.

The Port of Miami is participating in Art Basel Week with a public art of lights by Miami artists Jim Drain and Bhakti Baxter will create M|/\M|M/\X, a four-night temporary public art installation that will serve as the backdrop to the most elite, VIP party of Art Basel Miami Beach. A decadent soiree hosted by the artists will take place in the cargo containers located on the waterfront area of PortMiami. This party promises to be the most exclusive of Art Basel Miami Beach, only available to be experienced voyeuristically by travelers in vehicles on the MacArthur Causeway or on boats in Government Cut. Somewhere Over the Rainbow is on view until Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Welcome to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, a colorful experience created with the intention of transcending the viewer to an enhanced state of happiness and self-healing.The installation is a physical manifestation of the Rainbow Spectrum- transforming ideas and emotion into a colorful, translucent, toy-like inflatable world that will colorize the environment and its participants. Each piece is a symbolic reference to the human emotional spectrum. With each color corresponding to a different emotion, varying in meaning upon each visitor’s personal circumstances, the viewer is urged to reflect on one’s inner state. An iconic concept often seen in FriendsWithYou’s work, the viewer can physically experience the color spectrum and how that connects to our emotions. Spanning from the combination of colors (white), representing life, to the absence of color (black), representing death, the artists portray the organic rebirth pattern taking place in both our psyche and physical world. FriendsWithYou shines light on our existence, reminding us to play and interact on a deeper, subconscious level. Inspired by the Light and Space Movement of the 60’s and 70’s, FWY explores geometric shapes and how the use of light can affect the environment and our perception. In connection with West Coast minimalist artists such as James Turell, John McCracken and Helen Pashgian, FWY encourages the viewer to move around the installation and see how these works shift in understanding as one changes perspective. At times seeming as solid forms and at others to be dissolving into the environment, the totems are meant to not only alter space but also influence feeling.

The personal story we encounter is completed at the point of interaction, whether it’s a joyous romp or a meditative soaking of color. This arrangement of realized ideas reflect the internal thoughts from active to receptive, culminating inside an environment of cosmic, colorful, monolithic jewels. Looking at the collection of objects as a whole reveals the complete story. Using human traits, such as eyes, tie to the artists’ implied animism within their works, and give a spiritual essence and sense of life to the entire exhibition. Taking place in an intimate outdoors space facing Biscayne Bay, the abundance of the Miami sunlight will cast spectral shadows on the visitors of the Mondrian. Being exhibited and premiering in relation to Art Basel Miami Beach 2013, the space creates a natural mood allowing the installation to render memorable and significant experiences.

The Mondrian lends itself for the perfect exhibiting site, where nature meets art in a very organic setting. Current and playful, the Mondrian offers instant excitement in an oasis-like location. The building elegantly embraces the beautiful Biscayne Bay, which inspired this installation’s outdoor integration. The exterior provides entry to a magical world, including lush gardens with an intimate pool area and living foliage. The totem like pieces will activate with light, as the location offers sunset views over the downtown Miami skyline- original home to both artists of FriendsWithYou, Sam & Tury.
