SUU’S ART INSIGHTS TO FEATURE

MARK BURNS, SCULPTOR

Crafting unique variations on coffee servers is only one aspect of the creativity of sculptor Mark Burns. This acclaimed artisan shares his craft when he appears at Art Insights, SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, on Thursday, September 19, 2013. The lecture begins at 7pm in the Gilbert Great Hall, located in SUU’s Hunter Conference Center on the second floor. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Considered a cult figure for his colorful creations and his knowledge of 1950s kitsch, Mark Burns received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Dayton Art Institute then went on to earn his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Washington. During his career he has twice been the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. He is the author of Fifties Homestyle: Popular Ornament of the USA, published by Thames and Hudson Publishing. His sculptures are represented in museums and private collections nationally and internationally. He is Professor Emeritus from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas.   

Art Insightsis a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work, insights, and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

The Southern Utah University College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a Center for Shakespeare Studies and a graduate program in Arts Administration.
