SAT – this three-letter acronym can bring jitters to many students across the country. Well, it does so for a good reason. If these letters actually spell your future, then they have the power to bring a little anxiety.
The SAT or the Scholastic Aptitude Test is part of college admission process for most universities. It tests a student’s knowledge of reading, writing and math. Just recently, the College Board has announced the rollout of the redesigned SAT.
According to the College Board, the redesigned SAT will focus more on testing the knowledge, skills and comprehension of concepts that are most important for college and career readiness of students. Unlike the old SAT, which has put more emphasis on vocabulary, the redesigned SAT focuses more on comprehension and analysis, and how words are formed in terms of context, tone and impact.
SAT scores are reported on a scale from 200-800: one in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and one in Math. Students will also receive a separate score for the Essay section. The colleges that you apply to will interpret your scores and they will rate you on how you compared with other students who took the test. Like any other tests, the higher your score is, the better the scenario for you.
To give you a snapshot, Ivy League schools such as Princeton had 75% of its students achieve a perfect score of 800 for the reading and math portions. The same applies with Harvard. While you may not eye any of these schools, it is still a feather in your cap to achieve the highest score possible so that it can solidify your academic portfolio and make it stand out from the rest.
