Engineering is the art based primarily upon training in mathematics & the physical sciences of utilizing economically the forces & material of nature for the benefit of man.

Civil engineering is concerned with designing, constructing, maintaining works of public utility and it is the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use & convenience of man. It is also concerned with works like transportation, irrigation and public health.

The main scope of civil engineering includes planning, designing, estimating, supervising construction, managing construction, and maintenance of structures such as roads, bridges, dams and buildings and skyscrapers. Civil engineer is the one who designs and maintains works of public utility. There is an important but necessary impact of infrastructural development on the economy of a country with the surge of civil engineering, and there is an increase in importance of planning, scheduling and construction management with the advance in procedural and technological changes and advancements in the last decade particularly.

Civil engineering is a wide field and includes many types of structure such as residential buildings, public buildings, industrial building, and the main branches of civil engineering are classified as follows;

Surveying and Leveling,

Building, Planning and Construction,

Advanced Construction,

Structural Engineering,

Geotechnical Engineering,

Water Resources Engineering,

Transportation Engineering,

Environmental Engineering, and

Town planning

Construction of heavy structures such as bridges, dams, air ports, under water constructing, tunnels, pile foundations etc are using advanced constructing techniques. There is new geotechnical engineering, which basically does constructing several types of foundation such as simple footing, well foundation, pile foundation, coffer dams, and foundations of machine subjected to vibration is the main scope of geetechnical engineering.

There is a booming demand for civil engineers

Civil engineering currently is one of the in-demand disciplines and there is shortage of civil engineers now. Because the diversity and scope sets civil engineering apart from more specialized pursuits such as electrical, mechanical or aerospace engineering. Not only is civil engineering one of the largest but oldest engineering branches in the world, which accounts for one in five of all engineers working today across the globe. And speaking of oldest, it has its roots deeply grown into centuries old history and arhcitecture of the world's most renowned places. Because the word civil or civil society, whether it is the need for water for humans or transportation and shelter, it all comes under that perview of umbrella which covers civil. Civil engineering is going through a period of significant growth and change in the last decade and globalization is the biggest reason of it. As globalization has created tremendous amounts of jobs and improved economies, the scope for civil engineering and civil engineers has grown as well, and continues to grow.
