It was in ancient times when human beings realised that minimising friction leads to more productive work and hence they came up with circular objects made of different materials which can attract some part of the load towards itself resulting in smooth movement. This noble idea, in course of time, has assumed the name of industrial bearings. Various types of bearings are available for different needs and one class of it which finds frequent use is called tapered roller bearings. Bearings are the greatest instance of an engineering blessing which have given new directions to the way friction is controlled.

Different types of industrial bearings of various sizes, shapes and parameters find application in endless ways- the simplest of these is ball bearings. In this deep groove ball bearings are used for accommodation of radial and axial loads in both directions- these require almost no maintenance. Y-bearings are versatile, cost-effective and are found in conveyor systems, textile equipments, material handling systems, industrial fans etc. Angular contact bearings are robust bearings available in single row, double row and four-point contact variants. Textile spinning machines exclusively use self-aligning ball bearings of both tapered and cylindrical bores. Thrust ball bearings handle only axial loads and are available in both single and double direction variants.

Roller bearings manage loads efficiently when fast movement is considered. Heavy radial loads are accommodated by cylindrical roller bearings available in single row, double row and multi row formats. Spherical roller bearings are popular industrial bearings used in railway vehicles, printing presses, continuous casters etc. Both opened and sealed spherical roller bearings are good for vibratory applications. Needle roller bearings, which are essentially the smaller avatar of cylindrical roller bearings, perform well when radial space is scarce.

Tapered roller bearings manage high axial and radial loads in one direction. They have tapered outer and inner ring raceways and the rollers used in it are also tapered. These are classified into three categories depending on the angle of contact- normal, medium and steep angle. The inner ring, the outer ring, the roller container and the tapered rollers are the four major parts of this type of bearings. Single row tapered type roller bearings are the simplest in its class consisting of the cup and cone assembly. The double row tapered variant uses two cups and cones and are widely used in automotive industries. Four row tapered roller bearings are capable of managing exceptionally high radial loads and can be mounted either directly or indirectly. It offers maximum load distribution in minimum space.

Bearings experience huge loads and consequently have a limited lifetime. Proper mounting and careful lubrication ensures that friction gets reduced contributing to the lifetime of the bearing. Most of the bearings used these days consume minimum energy and a recent development in the form of water resistant bearings requires very less maintenance. Designs of most of the industrial bearings, especially of that of tapered roller bearings can be optimised as per requirement. Online stores are available for reducing time to shop bearings. And thus friction is not a challenge any more.
