Friday, November 1, 6:00 – 8:00 PM – MAP 2013 family festival at Oil and Cotton – Art and Artists From Around the World featuring Morehshin Allahyari talking about her work connected to her homeland, Iran, Azra Akšamija talking about her acclaimed Venice Biennale Project “Monument in Waiting”, Oto Hudec talking about his work with Roma Gypsies and Katt Lissard talking about her work in Lesotho (Southern Africa), the evening includes artist’s talk, food, music and art making activities.

Oto Hudec – Instrument for Listening
Belo Garden Park
In June and July of 2013, Hudec recorded the stories of Latino community members about their life and views connected to immigration, which will be played through a giant, wood megaphone, built by Hudec and decorated in collaboration with youth from Oak Cliff.

Soul Children’s Theatre – The New South Dallas

Over the summer of 2013, teens from the South Dallas Culture Center’s Soul Children’s Theatre, working with director Tara Youngblood, produced a video about gentrification in South Dallas. The screening will include a discussion about the ramifications of gentrification on whole communities

Over the summer of 2013 Herman worked with Dallas youth in a summer media literacy / photography program at Highland Hills Library. The participants produced images that explored self-image, culture and social responsibility.

Val Curry and Robert John Reedy – The One Day Project
Ro2 Art
Inspired by the concepts of Cradle-to-Cradle design, The One Day Project investigates the material possibilities hidden within local waste streams in Dallas through an installation of functional vessels formed from one day of waste from one local Starbucks.

MAP 2013 at Dallas Holocaust Museum – Center for Education and Tolerence
Azra Akšamija – Museum Solidarity Lobby (MSL)
MSL is a system that critically reflects on the role and relevance of the museum for civil society today. On the exterior of the Dallas Holocaust Museum, a large red-white striped barricade sign crosses out the museum’s facade, while In the entrance lobby, several museum shipping crates form an info-desk-like arrangement that includes sound from Akšamija’s interviews with Dallas residents reflecting on the political and social aspects of cultural memory and heritage.
Tomáš Rafa – New Nationalism
Exploring the line between patriotism and nationalism through photographs and videos, Rafa focuses on the rise of racism and xenophobia in Central Europe. His work is set against the background of political demonstrations, blockades, protests, and scenes of everyday life.

Human Rights Initiative of North Texas (HRI)
The visual telling of global human rights stories of recent immigrants to the DFW area who are seeking legal assistance for political asylum in the US. Installation in the HRI lobby and conference room.

UNT Art and Science collective: Lesli Robertson, Amie Adelman, Ruth West and Dr. Nandika Anne D’Souza – Weaving The Future
Perot Museum of Nature and Science
Drop-in workshops that include the demonstration of textile techniques utilizing fibers created from state-of-the-art, sustainable materials. The ectrospinninge unit that creates these fibers will be on loan from the UNT Material Sciences Lab, giving visitors a look at how the fibers are produced. In collaboration with visitors, the UNT team will use the fibers to create a woven community artwork.

Mick Lorusso – Biodiamond Energy: Electro Microbe Workshop
Perot Museum of Nature and Science
Drop-in family workshops that demonstrate the conversion of organic waste into electricity.
Participants help assemble and feed Microbial Fuel Cells that power a light for a DIY computer microscope and system that projects images of the process onto screens.

Barbara Benish – Flow: River to Sea
Trinity River Audubon Center
A permanent, public, teaching garden designed and constructed by Benish as a part of her on-going, international project about the connectedness of communities to the world’s oceans. The reception will include programs for family members of all ages.

MAP 2013 panel discussion exploring ethical and practical questions connected to artists working in the community. The panel includes MAP affiliate artists Frances Whitehead and Matej Vakula and Nasher XChange artist Vicki Meek. Moderated by MAP Director, Janeil Engelstad.

Matej Vakula – Manuals for Public Space(MfPS)
Oil and Cotton
Vakulas international project MfPS includes workshops where people exchange ideas about how to improve public space. The ideas from this workshop will be used to create manuals with actual plans, to be presented to the local government, for the use of space in Oak Cliff.

A bike tour of MAP 2013 exhibition sites. The MAP 2013 Bike Project includes free bike restoration workshops for youth in South and West Dallas.

Janeil Engelstad / MAP, Dallas Museum of Art, Center for Creative Connections and AVANCE
Throughout the summer of 2013 Janeil Engelstad and staff members from the Dallas Museum of Art’s C3 worked with community members from AVANCE to create a bi-lingual, Spanish – English language guide (the first ever for the museum) that illuminates art works in the DMA collection from the point of view of the community. The guides / booklets will be launched and celebrated on Nov 10.

The Harrisons’ will talk about their visionary ecological art projects, which have often led to changes in governmental policy and have expanded dialogue around unexplored issues leading to practical implementations throughout the US and Europe.

A civic and arts educational event for kids taking place in the museum’s American wing, in front of American Revolutionary era paintings, co-organized by Danette Dufilho and Anne Lawrence. The event includes performers in period costume, a sing along, a puppet show and an art making activity.

The McKinney Avenue Contemporary
A screening of a IMMIGRANT NATION short film followed by a panel discussion with Bill Holston, Director of Human Rights Initiative, Roberto Corono, Community Outreach Coordinator, Embrey Human Rights Program at SMU and Thania Sonaly McElroy, Director, Arte Sin Fronteras. The audience will be invited to share their (or a family member’s) immigration stories, which at will be used as inspiration for the creation of an on the spot mural by illustrator Anthony Weeks and will become part of the national IMMIGRANT NATION on-line platform / project.

In response to an invitation from the Bath House, MAP asked Wand Dye to design and construct a light from repurposed materials to be installed at the edge of White Rock Lake for protecting resident geese from attack by coyotes.

A progressive dinner and bus tour of their studio spaces that hi-lights notions of sharing and hospitality while spreading awareness about the importance of DIY programming and communities in the arts.

To close out MAP 2013, The Reading Room hosts Reading in Unison, a group reading from pertinent, interesting and unusual texts essays about social action art.
