The School of Art + Design at Portland State University (PSU), Oregon’s largest and only urban university, invites applications to its Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Art Practice/Studio degree. Built around a core of research-intensive creative investigation, the two-year, full-residency program is dedicated to interdisciplinary experimentation and the exploration of ideas through the experience of making. Students are supported in a range of production disciplines, from the traditional to the emerging, as they consider the various ways art can live in and beyond the studio.

We provide an environment conducive to challenging and rigorous study through a wide variety of resources including close ties with resident faculty; dialogue with visiting artists and scholars; seminars on current issues and contemporary art history; exhibition and travel opportunities; collaboration with students and faculty in other disciplines and a comprehensive teaching practicum. The School has multiple galleries, new computer graphics and multimedia facilities, a foundry, a welding studio, a printmaking studio with etching and lithography presses, a darkroom and wood and metal workshops. PSU’s 50-acre urban campus serves as a laboratory for sustainable practices.

Located in the heart of one of the nation’s most livable cities, PSU’s School of Art + Design is a vital part of a thriving, nationally recognized arts community. Our studios are close to the city’s premier galleries and alternative spaces on both sides of the Willamette River. The Portland Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Craft, the Northwest Film Center, the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for Graphic Arts, the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), YU Contemporary and an eclectic array of performing arts venues help broaden the PSU experience.

Visiting artists, present and past, include Richard Jackson, Critical Art Ensemble, Julia Dault, Stanya Kahn, Brian Bress, Anna Craycroft, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Yvonne Rainer (co-sponsored with Pacific Northwest College of Art), Euan Macdonald, Jennifer West, Wendy White, Paul Pfeiffer (co-sponsored with PSU’s Department of Architecture), Léonie Guyer, Joseph Park, Kenneth Goldsmith, Laurel Nakadate, James Yood, Hasan Elahi, George Kuchar, Sam Durant, Barry Sanders, Stephanie Syjuco, Hank Willis Thomas, Mark Dion, Frances Stark, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Daniel Bozhkov, Lucky Dragons, Andrea Zittel, Buster Simpson, Andrea Bowers, Anissa Mack, Y0UNG-HAE CHANG (HEAVY INDUSTRIES), and Edgar Heap of Birds.

Online applications are due February 1, 2014.
