"Camp is camp," said Smith, who checked in at Missouri Western State University straight from playing in the American Century Golf Championship at Stateline, Nev. "But this is my first time going away for camp."

Smith was eager to get on the field Tuesday, even though it will be with about 40 rookies, first-year players and selected veterans coming off injuries, most of whom will not crack the 53-man roster.

Chiefs QBs, Rookies Report, Embrace Extra Reps from The Mothership

As for members of the 2013 rookie draft class, Chiefs LB Nico Johnson shared what he plans to bring to the team, during his first season.

"Letting everybody know that this is a new season," Johnson said. "It's up for grabs. The Super Bowl is up for grabs, and if we want to go after it, then we have a chance to do that. Taking advantage of the opportunity and everybody being held accountable to do their job, I think that's what I can help bring. I've been through it, been through the downs, been through the ups, so that's what I can bring."

Eric Fisher Remains Unsigned As Chiefs Rookies, Quarterbacks Report from KC Star

"Right now we're still talking, and that's where we are," Dorsey said Monday. "It's the business side of it, and it's kind of what you do with this thing. Training camp hasn't even got here yet."

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he was encouraged by the fact Dorsey and Fisher's agent, Joel Segal, were communicating.

Remember Where Chiefs Have Been Before We See Where They're Going from KC Star

Their three biggest problems last year, in no particular order: a) limp head coach, b) incompetent quarterbacks, and c) embarrassing in-fighting and obsession with irrelevant details that had nothing to do with winning football games.

In response, the Chiefs a) hired the most accomplished coach available, b) traded for the best quarterback available, and c) put that accomplished coach with a personnel man who has both an excellent resume and a tremendous working relationship with said accomplished coach.

So, sure. There should be optimism. But it might be worth a moment - as the Chiefs (sort of) open training camp Tuesday - to pause for a little inventory.

The Kansas City Chiefs began arriving on the campus of Missouri Western for their first training camp under coach Andy Reid on Monday, toting into the dorms everything from flat-screen TVs to box fans to combat the heat and humidity.

Rookies and quarterbacks were due in ahead of the full squad, which will begin practice in earnest on Friday. But absent from the trail of players trickling in was Eric Fisher, the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft and the presumptive starter at right tackle.

Chiefs Super Fans Show Up To Camp from FOX4KC

The Chiefs players who reported to camp on Monday showed up seemingly well prepared for the next month: TVs, pillows, game consoles - the basics and must-have's to get by. But it was a small group of fans who made them feel most welcome.

"Sup man, How you doing?" asked one of the rookies to the handful of fans waiting outside the Missouri Western State University Dorms.

The recreation areas at the college have been converted into massive film study rooms and office space for coaches. The dorm rooms that normally hold two students will hold a single player each.

"It's usually two per room during the school year but for the chiefs we pushed the beds together to make them a little bigger because these are some big guys and make it one person per room," said Kurt McGuffin, director of athletics at Missouri Western.

Tucked into a corner on Missouri Western State University's campus sits a 300 bed brick building - boasting views of a Missouri hay field, a parking lot and a small pond. And for the next three weeks, that's where 85 Kansas City Chiefs players will call home.

Players To Be Blood-Tested In Camp For HGH from USA Today

The population study will be used to determine what a "normal" HGH level is for an NFL player as negotiations continue on several other issues, including discipline for those caught with increased HGH levels, before testing is implemented across the league.

"I don't think it's a big issue," said Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz. "The testing is just to establish baselines. We agreed to testing in the CBA and this is the first step in that process."

Gillie Da Kid Confirms Deal With Tamba Hali's Label, Working With Mannie Fresh from HopHopDX

"Me and Tamba Hali from the Kansas City Chiefs, we linked up. He's just an all-around good dude. He heard some records, believed in the talent that I bring to the table, the artistry that I bring to the table, and we just linked up. It was just the perfect marriage after that. That's what it is," said Gillie of the star Linebacker's label. "One thing about my man, every thing that he do, he like to do to a certain level. As well as myself." He continued, "Me and Tamba, we was like one and the same. It's just that his money is like 400 times longer than mines. We can do it on a real different level."

Pioli Talks Offset Language In Rookie Deals from ProFootballTalk

"I would find that very hard to believe, that Clark is demanding that the Chiefs or that anybody in the organization takes a stance," Pioli said. "I can say this emphatically. My four years in [Kansas City], he let us negotiate things the way we wanted to. At times the way we did it wasn't popular with agents or it wasn't popular in the agent community or with players, but ownership always allowed us to do business the way that we believed was right."

Jets Quaterbacks, Chip Kelly, Brian Banks Head Camp Storylines from NFL.com

I'm really anxious to see what Andy Reid is going to be able to do with the Kansas City Chiefs. I liken him to a modern-day version of Marty Schottenheimer, the kind of guy who can produce an instant winner when dropped into a chaotic situation.

Despite a 2-14 record, the Chiefs were loaded with talent last year, as evidenced by their six Pro Bowl participants. Now they have a coach who is going to be able to bring it all together, as well as a quarterback (Alex Smith) who has shown he can thrive with the right guidance.
