I LOVE natural beauty.  My body is so full of chemicals (medication) that I feel it’s only right to limit the amount of chemicals I put ON my body.

Back in May, I had a run in with some very UNnatural hair colour, which was branded to make it seem gentle and nourishing (read full post here), but on closer inspection I found it was full of all sorts of nasty stuff.  I vowed it would be the last time put something on my hair or body without reading the label.

My search for natural hair care was very short and sweet.  I popped into one of my favourite shops, Holland and Barratt, and checked out the beauty aisle.  I love that I can go in and pick up dried fruit, nuts and seeds, supplements AND a great range of hair and beauty products.  The only problem is that I spend WAY to much in there.  It could be worse I suppose – I could be hitting Hotel Chocolat…..(now there’s an idea!)

So my chosen hair dye was from a range called Naturtint.  I like a purpley red hue, and the closest was 4M – Mahogany Chestnut, so that’s the one I chose.  I bought is home, and put it in the bathroom cupboard until my grey roots were driving me sufficiently crazy!

It mixed in the usual way; squeeze one tube of stuff into another tube of stuff, shake and slop that stuff on your hair.  It’s highly technical.  The first thing I noticed was how nice it smelled, almost like a posh shower gel.  I’ve been so used to using products packed with ammonia and hydrogen peroxide that it actually threw me.  I wondered if I was actually dying my hair or if I was practicing to do it properly later.  The goo was a nice consistency (for goo) and once squeezed into the root area and massaged in a little, it stayed on my head rather than running down my face and neck.

I developed for 45 minutes (I always leave on the longest recommended time as I have very thick coarse hair) and washed off.  There did not even seem to be as much horrible coloured liquid that takes an age under the shower head to rinse out.  Condition, rinse, and leave again.  It looked good and felt good, but I was still suspicious (as is my nature).  I fully expected to have a head full of greys when my hair dried.

So imagine my surprise when a gorgeous browny reddy shiny do was what greeted me upon drying.  That’s not quite true – this was the beginnings of my wedding style put together by my hairdresser.  I could never manage anything that intricate.

Naturtint Mahogany Chestnut – review at a glance

Price – £9.99 4/5 – very reasonable

Application – 5/5 – very easy, stayed put

Smell – 5/5

Colour – 4/5 – not quite what I was after but just like the box and I still love it

Condition – 5/5 – hair was left shiny and in top condition

So, would I use this again?  Absolutely, and I will.  Those pesky greys don’t take care of themselves.
