Introduction to Pre-Industrial Ironmaking

Course Description: This course will explore the development of iron smelting and production prior to the introduction of coke fired blast furnaces, from the early Iron Age through to the beginning of the 18th century. Secondary focus of this course will centre on the chemistry and physics of ironmaking, in order to give participants a deeper understanding of the processes that go on during smelting and forging. Participants will also have the opportunity to examine archaeological samples of different iron-making residues, and discuss the importance of such residues in their archaeological context. Teaching will be conducted through a combination of lecture, discussion and practical work.

Through lectures and practical sessions, topics covered will include species and element identification, ageing, sexing, and taphonomy. This course assumes no prior knowledge and can be taken on its own, but the subject will be enhanced by also attending the following workshop on animal teeth.

Aerial Photography: Interpretation and Rectification

Course Description: This course will introduce participants to techniques used in interpreting and rectifying archaeological aerial photographs via a programme of short lectures, discussion, and practical work. Participants will be given the opportunity to identify and interpret archaeological and landscape features from aerial photographs. Participants will then be shown how to effectively rectify these photographs by hand, using the Network Method.

Sampling in Archaeology

Course Description: This workshop will comprise both lectures and practical sessions. Participants will be introduced to a variety of archaeological sampling strategies (e.g. judgemental, stratified, random and so on). These strategies will then be applied to a range of examples, in order to allow participants to determine how to successfully choose and implement appropriate sampling methods in both the field and laboratory.

Map Regression Skills

Course Description: This classroom based workshop will introduce participants to the history and development of map production, as well as a range of map reading skills via both lecturing and practical tasks. This workshop will then focus on the use of educational and public map sources, map interrogation skills, and regression techniques used professionally in the production of archaeological desk based assessments. Themes incorporated into this workshop also include landscape change and development (e.g. landscape economy, patterns, usage, and transportation), further allowing exploration of any social and economic impact these changes are likely to have.

Six Million Years in the Making: the evolution of modern humans

Course Description: This workshop explores the human lineage from the earliest known human ancestors to our own species, Homo sapiens. The course will include a more detailed look at famous palaeoanthropological discoveries such as ‘Lucy’ and ‘Turkana Boy’, and our enigmatic extinct cousins the Neanderthals. Archaeological Illustration

Course Description: This course will provide an introduction to the techniques used in the production of archaeological drawings. The workshop will focus primarily on how ceramics are illustrated, and participants will be shown how to produce their own piece of illustration work.
