Forget washed-up J-pop relics like Ayumi Hamasaki and Koda Kumi — right now it’s all about Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. The Yasutaka Nakata-produced style icon just snatched the J-diva crown in a blaze of Harajuku glory by landing her first No. 1 album on the Oricon Charts.

Kyary’s sophomore album, Nanda Collection, sold 126,074 copies in its first week, topping the charts with more than double the sales of its nearest competitor, SHINee’s Boys Meet U, and giving Kyary the highest first-week sales for a J-pop soloist this year (a record that will be broken next week when Namie Amuro’s Feel drops, but whatever). Kweenyary’s popularity has been rising every year since her debut, and so have her record sales: Her first EP, Moshi Moshi Harajuku, debuted at No. 18 back in 2011 with just 6,311 copies, while her full-length follow-up, Pamyu Pamyu Revolution, entered at No. 2 with 71,179 copies last year.

Will there by any stop to Kyary’s skyrocketing success, or will she just keep getting bigger and bigger until she’s the Madonna/Michael Jackson/Elvis of Japan? If there’s any justice in the world, it’ll be the latter.

MWAHAHAHA
