Review

Bio-art bvba (Belgium) is a new, small, innovative company, established in 2011 when it acquired the technology, patents and brand name from the former company Bio Art, who primarily was active in the development of immunoassays and ELISA test methods.

Bio-art however, now focuses increasingly on molecular diagnostics, translating fundamental science into practical solutions. Close collaboration with science institutions on various research projects has led to the development of many PCR-based applications used in the prevention and treatment of diseases in the field of ornamental fish and aquaculture, horticulture and agriculture.

Food safety, food hygiene and food quality are emerging topics, making accurate and quick measurement of e.g. plant, fruit, vegetable or fish pathogens the basis of an environmental and economic sound health management system. Bio-art’s DNA MultiScan was developed in response to the limitations of the traditional diagnostic tools which cannot meet the growing market demand for rapid and simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens at a reasonable cost. DNA MultiScan nowoffers simultaneous detection and identification of a wide variety of pathogens in samples (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses…), giving results within a period of about 11 hours.

Regarding fish and shrimp disease management, Bio-art is working together with specialists and veterinarians who do have long time experience in aquatic animal diseases and risk assessments.

DNA amplification has come a long way, from the low-throughput PCR reactions, detecting one target in one tube, to the much faster quantitative PCR, where 384-reactions instruments are becoming a standard.

DNA-arrays like Bio Art DNA MultiScan are powerful multiplex tools allowing detection of a large amount of pathogens within a single analysis.

DNA-based techniques are wonderful tools, simple to perform and the risk for cross contamination is extremely low. The market for accurate, sensitive and fast quantification of nucleic acid sequences remains growing.

Bio-art developed and released fast PCR-based kits and testing methods for:

-       Aquaculture & ornamental fish and shrimp pathogens

-       Food safety & human pathogens

-       Agriculture and horticulture pathogens

Bio-art provides products and services such as:

-       DNA MultiScan®membranes and kits for a variety of applications, enabling fast and simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens.

-       Development and optimization of diagnostic assays for the most demanding applications for fish and shrimp applications e.g. qPCR and multiplex PCR, on customers’ demand.

-       Support and advice in setting up a molecular diagnostics laboratory and implementing good laboratory practice and quality control throughout the entire workflow.

-       Training and support on the use of DNA MultiScan®.

-       Analysis of samples with DNA MultiScan® or PCR assays in Bio-art’s laboratory.

Primer Design

-       Bio-art has substantial experience in primer design using specialized software. Primer design is the first step in molecular assay design. It requires knowledge of specific DNA-regions in target organisms and DNA-amplification reaction kinetics. Most of the work is carried out using DNA-sequence databases and dedicated software.

Bio Art has ample experience in primer design and PCR-based assay development. Together, we can choose which application suits your needs best. Additionally, we can help you setting up your laboratory and implementing essential quality control throughout the entire workflow.
