With Halloween creeping closer and closer, and the ghosts ready to jump out of the closet and say BOO!!!! We decided it was time to put together a spooky post filled with Educational apps to get you in the mood for this scary time of year. With something for everyone we have apps from the spine tingling to just plain fun.

Toca Kitchen Monsters

By Toca Boca AB

(FREE) Toca Kitchen Monsters is very popular with my preschool speech students. Kids can choose between 2 monsters to feed, each with different food preferences. There are 8 food choices in the fridge and five ways to prepare the food. I like that you can prepare each item more than one way. Example: you can slice the food, then boil it. This allows me to practice two-step directions with my students. The app can be used to practice the prepositions in, out, on, off and the adjectives hot and cold. I have found it to be useful with reluctant talkers (few kids can resist saying “in” or “on” to get to use the food processor). The kids like that the fridge and appliances are filthy (apparently monsters are terrible housekeepers) and seeing the monsters refuse to eat food they don’t like.

There is an ad for other Toca Boca apps on the initial page but this can be turned off thorough Apple settings. There is another ad on the monster selection page for Toca Kitchen which leads you to link with a download button. I would love it if this ad could also be disabled.

This is a great free app! I highly recommend it. ~Joanna Clancy on 2013-06-09 10:18:06 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

The Berenstain Bears Go on a Ghost Walk

by Oceanhouse Media

(3.99) The Berenstain Bears Go on a Ghost Walk. Your kids will love adventuring with the Berenstain Bears as they create their fabulous Ghost Walk. My daughter adores this app and always talks about ghosts and monsters. She loves the read to me option as she is unable to read yet. I love the fact that the text is highlighted as the professional narratoe reads the story as this allows her to follow what is being read and start to recognise sight words. This wonderful app also includes touch/text which means your kids can tap on any word or object and the words is displayed larger on the screen as well as being read. Another wonderful way for kids to learn to recognise words and objects. There are no IAP’s and external links are locked from kids. We love this and it s a wonderful story. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-10-10 06:44:17 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Sago Mini Monsters

By Sago Sago

(2.99–>FREE) Sago Mini Monsters is a delightful little app for preschoolers and early elementary school children. They get to colour and decorate their very own monster friend. This app is also wonderful for teaching young children about good hygiene as it requires them to brush their monsters teeth after they have fed it. The monsters appear out of bubbling gloopy green goo, and this is where your child pulls their food and decorations from. Once they have fed and brushed their monster they can then decorate them with a range of objects. When they have finished they can take a photo and their monster disappears to be replaced by another for them to play with. This app is great for working on creativity skills, fine motor skills, and more with young children. I highly recommend the app. There are no IAP’s and external links from the main screen are locked from kids. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-09-22 22:03:22 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Sushi Monster

By Scholastic

(FREE) Sushi Monster. A good game for reinforcing addition and subtraction. It has 7 levels in addition and 5 levels in subtraction. Sushi plates are put up onto the sushi train and you have to correctly add or subtract the numbered plates to get the figure around the monsters neck. But beware if you use the wrong combination of numbers you may not be able to complete all the required equations to complete that level. If you make an incorrect choice the monster smashes them off the table and you don’t get any points for that equation. The aim is to be as fast as you can to give the monster the correct food for points. Each level is locked until the previous one is completed successfully. The timer can also be turned on or off from the settings menu. A very basic game but it was fun to play. No IAP’s but external links are not locked. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-07-02 18:27:22 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

The Monster at the End of This Book…starring Grover!

By Sesame Street

(4.99) The Monster at the End of This Book…starring Grover! captivates early readers. In fact, with its great narration, music, and artwork, I think this interactive book has set a high standard for all the other ebooks since it was originally published. The reader actively participates as a character in the story. There is a sequel that follows this book to check out as well. ~Christie on 2013-05-09 11:23:47 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Another Monster at the End of This Book…Starring Grover & Elmo!

By Sesame Street

(4.99–>3.99) Another Monster at the End of This Book…Starring Grover. I just downloaded this yesterday and presented it to one of my low vision students. They were spellbound! In Monster at the End of This Book, Grover and Elmo interact over their curiosities and fears concerning monsters. Grover is terrified, and Elmo is just rolling with it – curious to see the monster. Each page has a task to do, in order to get to the next page and then closer to the “Monster at the End”. The book is beautifully illustrated without visual clutter, and the animations are top notch. Highly recommended and fun. ~Jo Booth on 2013-05-17 05:27:35 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Cutie Monsters Jigsaw Puzzles

By Paul Smith

(3.99) Cutie Monsters-Jigsaw Puzzles. Such a sweet and wonderful game for preschoolers. You can choose to either self explore or have guided play for learning about the numbers 1-10. The material is presented in a one to one correspondence in learning to count, which is so important as it gives the child kinetic and proprioceptive feedback (input to the muscles and joints), as to what numbers feel like – numbers are after all are about rhythm and coordination, and teach us about space. There are also jigsaw puzzles in this game. I do wish for future updates that the pieces to the puzzles would be a little easier to snap to the grid. I definitely would recommend this app. ~Jo Booth on 2013-05-26 17:58:18 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Monsters, Inc. Storybook Deluxe

By Disney

(6.99–>2.99) Monsters, Inc. Storybook Deluxe. Just like reliving the movie. This is an awesome storybook about mosters, inc. My daughter loves watching the movie and now we get to take it with us as a storybook as well. No guessing which one she chooses to read in bed every night. The pages have a bit of interaction in them, but it is just great with scenes from the movie as the book pages, and they are animated. We love it. There is also a play option in which you have to tilt the ipad to try and get to the other end of the room without touching any human childs objects. Needless to say I am hopeless at it but my 4 year old passes me everytime. Highly recommended. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-05-18 06:22:30 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Room on the Broom: Games

By Magic Light Pictures Ltd.

(4.99) Room on the Broom: Games is an absolute must for preschoolers learning basic iPad skills. The games are based on the book by Julia Donaldson, and oh yes, next shopping trip that book just may follow me home. The illustrations are beautiful, and the music is low key and engaging, creating a sense of wonderment and discovery. With eight languages to choose from, it supports a wide variety of nations. There are a total of 8 games – finding objects- both ones that are hidden and moving- teaching coordination of kid’s visual motor systems, a star dot to dot as well as creating pathways of stars for Witch and Cat to fly, feed the dragon (moving the dragon to feed on fries), and flying a broom to pick up letters to spell simple words. I love that the targeting games have a purpose with a specific goal and are not just hot spots placed all over the page. In the star to star, you can create the pathway to the next star- making loop de loops or zigzags if you wish. Want a different color? A simple tap on the star changes the color. The only thing I could possibly want is that the book be made available for the iPad. This game is not just for Halloween, and could be played anytime. Highly Recommended. ~Jo Booth on 2013-11-16 12:53:54 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

First Words Halloween

By Learning Touch LLC

(1.99) First Words Halloween is a fantastic app for early spellers and readers! Using fun words related to Halloween, the app has your child drag and drop the letters into their correct spots, and once completed, the picture becomes animated! The app is packed with features, which make it work for children of varying ability levels, like an option to tun hints on or off, change the length of the words, just to name a few. I highly recommend this app, and it is good for kids who are just learning reading and spelling, as well as those who are reviewing the basics. **All links within the app are now secured, as are settings, so little fingers do not get into areas where they should not be. Ghosts. Encyclopedia of phantoms and afterlife. An entertaining mystic interactive horror story book.

By Terrylab

(4.99) Ghosts. Encyclopedia of phantoms and afterlife. An entertaining mystic interactive horror story book. This is a fantastic read if you are interested in Ghosts and the afterlife. The book is filled with information including ghosts from back in ancient times. You can read about ancient civilizations beliefs in where we go in our afterlife, what rituals they had to stop people coming back as ghosts and more. As well as being a very interesting read, the book is filled with spooky, spine tingling interactions and ghostly figures float across the screen. By using the ouija board you decide which part of the ghostly novel you would like to explore. You can see ghosts in cemetries, types of ghosts, ghost twins, poltergeists, animal spirits and more. I absolutely love the way you have to enter the book (I will not give this away you will have to discover for yourself). The developers have done a truly brilliant job with this. I highly recommend this book. If you get scared easily or have nightmares, I recommend you leave it alone, however if you like a good spine tingling read then head in and experience it for yourself. There are no IAP’s however external links are not locked. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-10-07 15:03:47 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Giggle Ghosts: Counting Fun!

By Busy Bee Studios

(1.99–>0.99) Giggle Ghosts is a sweet little app to teach counting 1-20 in 4 chunks of 5 each. After you have helped 4 sets of 5 ghosts whistle through the game by blowing air up chimneys to help them float along, the game will then count, using a 1:1 correspondence 1-20. If you help all 20 ghosts, there is a ghost PARTAY! You must grade your force to be successful, but the payoff of spooky music and giggling ghosts and other hot spots is infectious. I liked this app, for its simplicity, but you must play it once or twice to know what to do to achieve the goal. I would recommend this as it is a lot of fun. ~Jo Booth on 2013-07-05 16:02:46 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Halloween Heroes – Fun & Ecofriendly costumes for kids

By Yogome, Inc

(FREE) Halloween Heroes – Fun is a game app that also teaches recycling as well. Using a Halloween theme as the backdrop, users move through the levels collecting various types of recycling by catching it as it falls, popping bubbles, or gathering it into a container. Additionally, there is a section with EcoTips, and it contains puzzles along with a tutorial about ways to use recycled materials. There are no ads and all external links are behind a parent access menu. The game does something nice, in that it feels like the kids of games adults may play that have in-app purchases, but these are only available to “purchase” with coins earned in the game, and there is no way to use money to add more. Overall, it is a cute game app that combines two things we may not think about as going together–recycling and Halloween. ~Jennifer Erp on 2013-11-14 21:00:27 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Spookley is a square pumpkin who discovered he is different from the other, more traditional round pumpkins. As Spookley learns to accept himself as he is, he also learns that he can make important contributions to his community. I won’t tell you more, but suffice it to say your child will be introduced to all sorts of early concepts…shapes, colors, science (farming and the growth season of plants) and social values and mores. (1.99) Wood Puzzle Halloween HD. There are 15 fun halloween puzzles in this collection including witches, mummies, skeletons, ghosts and more so there is something there for any child. I love the automode feature in this app so if your child is struggling you can put it on automode so they can see how it fits together, a brilliant idea. There is one extra special feature that you can turn on in these which is in the settings area and that is rotation. Brusheez – The Little Monsters Toothbrush Timer

By Shondicon

(2.99–>FREE) Brusheez is a simplistic and fun way for kiddos to become actively engaged in brushing their teeth for the proper length of time daily. There are two critter-type characters to personalize, one female and the other male. Children can create their uniquely designed brushing pal and can even make their friend’s teeth disappear by clicking on each tooth should they so choose. When it is time to brush, all they need to do is click the clock, which the parent can adjust for the time they prefer to have the child brush independently, and a quartet will begin singing on the importance of brushing. It’s cute, fun, and easy to manipulate. The parent controls are quite nice as well and will not be easily figured out by the child as the box you touch to open them constantly changes position in the formula of the pattern given. And the only links you find once open are to share the app in various social mediums or read a tutorial on the app. There are no in-app purchases. And is perfect for those kiddos who simply refuse to consider brushing because not only does it offer them visual cues, it provides technological stimulation which may help assist parents in their quest to promote better dental hygiene through positive reinforcement techniques. I highly recommend this one! It’s too good to miss:-) ~Leora Smith Appleby on 2013-07-22 08:15:54 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Carve-a-Pumpkin from Parents magazine

By Resolute Digital, LLC

(FREE) Carve-a-Pumpkin from Parents magazine is a neat Halllween app for trying out designs on pumpkins, or for fun with pumpkins for those who have sensory challenges when it comes to dealing with teh real thing. In this app, you can choose from five punkins to either decorate or virtually carve. There are several decorating choices, and with craving, you can choose freehand, or choose separate mouths, noses and eyes, or choose entire faces. Once you choose your decoration or shape for carving, it can be moved, made larger or smaller, roasted and more, very easily. When you are done, you choose a background, and it takes to another page, in which you have sharing choices. This page does offer social media links, but you have to have the passwords to sign in. So, if you are not signed in, your child cannot utilize this feature. In fact, I was signed in to one network, and or still asked for a sign in, which is good. It did allow for emailing pictures, and you can save your creation to the camera roll. On the home page, there is a link to another app by Parents magazine, which is free at the time of this review. I recommend this app. The final results are so realistic. My son loves it, and it does give yiu an idea of how an idea will turn out on a real pumpkin. My child also likes it because he cannot tolerate the feeling of real pumpkin. There are no IAPs an unsecured link to an app that is currently free, social links as described above, and no ads. ~Angie Gorz on 2014-09-30 23:22:08 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Pocket Charts! Happy Halloween! Match Game

By Good Neighbor Press, Inc

(1.99–>0.99) Pocket Charts! Happy Halloween! Match Game is designed like the pocket charts you see in classrooms for young children, or in classrooms for some children with special needs, who are in need of visual supports. In this Halloween themed app of the series, kids will see two rows of pocket charts, which already contain one Halloween picture card. They will also see 4 picture cards at the bottom of the screen. The challenge is to match one of the picture cards at the bottom of the screen to each of the 2 pictures already placed in the pocket charts. So, they have to find the matching picture cards. The pictures are fun, and some differences are subtle. When the child makes a match, the app gives a visual and auditory reward. If the card is incorrect, the app makes a gentle sound indicating that the answer is incorrect, but the child can try a different card too. You can turn off music on the home page, and set the app to random, if desired. The app has no social links, and at the end of the game it appears that the app has links to other apps, but they do not actually go anywhere. They are just graphics, and there are no ads. I highly recommend this app. With a simple, non-distracting design, this app is great for matching skills, finding same objects, and more. It is a great app for preschoolers and some children with special needs. ~Angie Gorz on 2014-09-30 23:40:58 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Mystery Math Town

By Artgig Studio

(2.99) Mystery Math Town is one of the most engaging math fact apps I have ever encountered! It has amazing graphics and it sends the user on a mission to collect lightning bugs and gold coins in order to progress through the game. It allows the user to adjust the difficulty of the math questions asked, in addition (0-50), subtraction (0-50) and multiplication (1-10). It also allows you to select tally marks and dice as number choices as well, mixed in with numbers. In this app the user collects various numbers, and to progress through the houses you must unlock doors and windows by using numbers collected to solve math problems. Sometimes you can’t collect all the numbers in a room, and you may need to go back later to get a number that is needed for a future problem. This involves a higher level of critical thinking than most math apps out there because the user has to build the equations rather than just spit out memorized facts. It also allows for multiple user accounts so more than one child or student can use it at once. There are no ads or in app purchases, either. I highly recommend this app–the various rooms of the house have interactive portraits and other elements to keep kids playing for ages. ~Jennifer Erp on 2013-10-28 21:47:23 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Mystery Math Museum

By Artgig Studio

(2.99) Mystery Math Museum is a really fun, challenging math app which is great for math as well as critical thinking skills. A game for multiple users, each student goes through different museum levels solving math problems. Students work on addition (0-50), subtraction (0-50), multiplication (1-10), and division (1-10) skills. Great ability to customize difficulty levels! Kids will not know they are learning and practicing math so painlessly. No in app purchases. Graphics are engaging! I use this as a reward game after speech! ~Helen Wagner on 2013-10-31 06:28:08 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes
