iBiome-Wetland
By Springbay Studio Ltd.
data-recalc-dims="1">
(2.99–>FREE) With a highly visual and interactive presentation, iBiome-Wetland is an excellent way to introduce and reinforce elementary school science concepts. Covered concepts include Fresh Water Marshes, Salt Water Marshes, Mangrove Swamps 1 and 2. Students learn about producers, consumers, preditors, and prey as they add species and build their own biodome. One of the coolest features is the ability to increase the number of the species in the biodome to see the effects that has on other species. For example if you increase the amount of algae, the animal species increase as the snails increase in response to the available food. However, if the number of birds increase, the pressure on the rest of the plants and snails decreases their numbers. This would be a great app to be used in a classroom with a projector. For home use, it can be used to support science chapters on these ecosystems by providing a visual and interactive learning environment. With the lack of narration and fairly high reading level, many students will require support from an adult to do the reading and game play. The Crazy Web game gets difficult as the number of matches increase. While I was having teaching moment with my daughter, the other disks would move out of bounds and end the game. If I drew a line to prevent the disks from going out of bounds, my daughter would get distracted. It would be a lot easier to teach with the app and would allow more students to use it independently if the out-of-bounds feature could be disabled. Also, after completing the Crazy Web, a teaching box with great information appears. However, it blocks the Crazy Web, so there is no way to review the work and the relationships and connections just completed. It would be helpful if this box either appeared so that it didn’t block the Web or could be dismissed, with the user remaining at the Crazy Web to reinforce the learning concepts. Another wish list item would be to at least have keywords pronounced when they are touched. However, with that said, I counted my daughter saying, “Cool!” five times in one Biodome. She was engaged and excited to learn. She particularly enjoyed earning badges and watching her creatures in the Biodome. This is a quality app that makes learning fun at a very reasonable price. Well done! ~Diane on 2014-11-26 22:47:40 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Milk Hunt: Kids Math Game
By Skidos Learning
data-recalc-dims="1">
(2.99–>FREE) Milk Hunt: Kids Math Game is an excellent math app for primary school aged students to have fun whilst practising their skills in the four mathematical operations. In the app, the student has to help a cute little kangaroo named Kando to bounce, jump and roll across famous Australian landmarks whilst simultaneously completing Maths questions. The game is completely customisable to suit the ability of the student, so you can have random questions which include all of the basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Another option is to have one, two, or three of these operations switched on. Throughout the game, the player needs to help Kando collect milk bottles as well as complete missions (a total of ninety) and answer mathematical questions during his journey across Australia. Whilst the app has InAppPurchases, it is not essential to spend any money – just collect enough milk bottles to ‘buy’ the power-ups that you need. I highly recommend this app as a fun way for a student to focus on a mathematical concept causing concern, or just for pure enjoyment of playing the game. ~Jenny Webster on 2014-10-07 07:01:24 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Spelling Hangman
By Emma Mills

(2.99–>0.99) Spelling Hangman is a neat app for practicing spelling lists. Parents or teachers can add their own spelling list for children to work on, add audio, choose to lock their lists under “lock configuration” with a password and get kids practicing. In the app, the first word is spoken, and can be repeated by hitting the arrow at the bottom, and kids practice spelling it by using the keyboard at the right. The app plays like a traditional game of hang man, when a letter is missed a piece of the picture shows up, and if the entire word is missed, the word is shown. I like now customizable the app is, with adding your own words and lists, it makes it appropriate for a wider range of students. The voice detection is good, which can be an issue. Tracks ‘n’ Trains: Zoo Train
By Busy Bee Studios
data-recalc-dims="1">
(2.99–>FREE) What a fun app! I thought my daughter was going to like it, but I think it will be a bigger hit with my husband. The app allows you to play with several premade tracks or you can create your own. There are three backgrounds, and each comes with its own set of personalized “accessories.” For example, the winter one has a snowman and reindeer, while the flower one has trees and shrubs. The tracks are really easy to make once you play around with it a little. If you put in a river, the track automatically becomes a bridge, without you having to do anything. The turn-arounds are customizable so that while the train is running, you can switch the direction it will go on the next turn-around. There is something soothing about the sound effects of the train running on the tracks, and you can adjust the speed easily.

(2.99–>FREE) Shapes & Patterns by Pirate Trio. This is an excellent app for teaching colours and shapes. There are 4 different parts to the app. One is learning to recognise shapes, but when asking for the shapes they also say a colour which allows kids to recognise shapes by association. The other 3 sections are all puzzle groups. This is versatile for all ages depending which group you choose. For my 2 year old me favourite is the one where each shape appears after they have added the first one. This helps young children to recognise their shapes slowly without having to have them all there at once. There are 72 puzzles included in this section and once the puzzle is complete it tells the child what pattern they have made. The 2 other puzzle sections have all the shapes present to start with and kids have to figure out where they go, one of these uses plain coloured shapes and the other uses patterned shapes. Wubbzy’s The Night Before Christmas
By Cupcake Digital
data-recalc-dims="1">
(2.99–>0.99) Wubbzy’s The Night Before Christmas is a delightful play on “A Night Before Christmas.” It’s done in a style that only Wubbzy can do. The illustrations are festive and engaging…and just put you in the mood for Christmastime fun. There are 3 modes of play: read to me, read and play and read myself. Words are highlighted with both having the text read to you and by touching a word, which is a nice boost for beginning readers. I like that hotspots are highlighted, and the pages have just enough reading and activity to hold a preschooler’s attention. As in all Wubbzy apps from Cupcake Digital, the developers extend play from the book itself with in app games, videos and coloring activities as well as their extensive printable activities that you can download from their website for off screen play. There are links to other apps under a secured button, otherwise no ads or IAPs. I have really come to love Wubbzy and his friends, and would highly recommend their apps. ~Jo Booth OT on 2013-11-28 14:04:13 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Victor’s cold! HD
By SlimCricket
data-recalc-dims="1">
(3.99–>0.99) Victor’s cold! HD. This is a fun little story with some great interactions hidden throughout. Victor the penguins mummy goes away and he goes on a quest meeting new friends who try to warm Victor back up again by doing activities that they love to do themselves. It is also great for teaching kids things they can do to keep warm on a cold day like dancing. There are 2 reading options including read by myself and read to me. Throughout the book your child has to complete some activities to move onto the next part of the story. Like making Victor slide down the slide 3 times and choosing the instruments asked for. I would like to have seen text highlighted as the story was being read so children can start to recognise sight words. I think in the read to me option that the narrator was very slow and if the interactions weren’t there on each page then it wouldn’t have kept my kids attention very long. The interactivity is the only thing that keeps kids engaged in the story. I do love the words that are written in bold on various pages that are also interactive and in a way either show a picture of the animal that they are asking for or has something relating to the word happen, eg. for cold it makes the sound of teeth chattering. I think with a couple of improvements this could be a 5 star app. There are no IAP’s and external links are locked from kids. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-04-17 16:45:22 ==> User rating: 3 Recommended: Yes

Playground 1 – ‘Best of’ Edition. 12 Fun & Educational Animal Games for Toddlers and Children
By Jan Essig
data-recalc-dims="1">
(4.99–>3.99) Playground 1 – Best of Edition. 12 games for kids in 1 App. My 3 and 4 year old have spent hours on this app! I have to admit I’ve enjoyed some time with COLORS, myself. I really like that the developer has used these games to teach skills needed for little ones, like ERASE and COLLECT. I also appreciate that his apps start out easy and gradually increase in difficulty. We were confused by the SLIDE game as we couldn’t manually move the pieces, like the old sliding piece puzzles. Love the press and hold 5 second controls! Great games, awesome graphics! Hours of fun! ~Judy on 2013-05-03 20:16:34 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes
