Best Math Apps

Motion Math: Wings Pro

By Motion Math

(6.99) Motion Math: Wings Pro is a wonderful app for working on Multiplication Skills with Kids. A great way for them to practice multiplication but they need to be able to calculate quickly and choose the correct side to fly over with the highest equation. The game is quite fun where kids simply control their bird by tilting the device to the correct side. I love how this not only works on kids being able to recognise which multiplication is the larger equation by showing the equations but also by having a combination of blocks and multiples as well. It is really designed to get kids thinking outside the box of normal multiplication. Kids have a time limit to complete each island and try and get the furthest distance flown and the most equations correct. If they get one wrong they are simply bounced back again and have to attempt this again. The equation they got wrong is then repeated again before reaching the end of the time limit. I think this is a very engaging app and as a reward kids are presented with twigs and feathers collected to rebuild the birds home. No IAP’s or external links that I could find. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-06-02 06:54:20 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Intro to Math, by Montessorium

By Montessorium, LLC

(3.99–>1.99) Intro to Math, by Montessorium is truly a fabulous app that you won’t want to let slip through your fingers. Great for preschoolers and kindergarten kids to give them an easy to understand introduction to maths. Kids will learn with 6 fun games, numbers 1-10, sequencing, early addition, recognising numerals, writing numbers, recognising early fractions, recognising odd and even numbers, recognising numbers in dot form and more. This is a wonderful fun app for kids that introduces these numbers to kids at a speed they can comprehend. Whilst the dot format of the numbers is not in the format we teach in Australia I like how they have used this to then teach odd, even and essentially division or halves. I highly recommend this app. There are no IAP’s or external links, however there are advertisements for their other apps included within the app with information on each app. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-06-02 04:04:46 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

DragonBox Algebra 12+

By WeWantToKnow AS

(9.99–>4.99) DragonBox Algebra 12+ is a wonderful surprise of an app! With over 350 puzzle style levels to follow, each designed to build upon the last, with 20 chapters, the app has no shortage of content. The quality is just phenomenal! This app takes a fun approach to algebraic concepts, where your child, or you as an adult, can learn them in a way that is enjoyable, while working on concepts like variables, solving for x or isolating x, positive and negative variables, substitution, common denominators, and so much more. The app starts off showing x as as a dragon in a box who will not grow until he is alone. It also uses fun pictures for numbers, that can be manipulated, just like an equation can be, to make the same concepts engaging to the user. As you continue playing, new concepts are added, and difficulty gradually increases. I have never seen an app quite like this for algebra, but I hope to see more. It is, in my opinion, the best for this age group, in my opinion. The bright and fun, crystal clear graphics will make kids want to play, and the button for animated help will keep them from getting frustrated if they are having trouble. Depending on the child, this app may be appropriate for children under 12 as well as adults. My son, who has special needs did well with this app, and he is 11 (at least at Chapter 1). There are no IAPs, ads, and all external links are secured. I highly recommend it! ~Angie Gorz on 2014-06-01 22:12:27 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Park Math HD – by Duck Duck Moose

By Duck Duck Moose, Inc.

(1.99) Park Math HD – by Duck Duck Moose is a great first Maths app. It has 2 levels. Level 1 starts of with the basics learning about balance, counting to 20, patterns & sequences, putting things in order small to large, first learning of addition and subtraction in a fun way which makes it extremely easy for children to learn. Shake the tree and make apples fall off and count how many are left so your children get the idea of what they are supposed to be doing to subtract. Level 2 takes things further. Learn to count to 50, counting and finding the correct food, the patterns and sequences get more complicated, and the equations your child works with get harder. There are no iap however external links are not locked. All up an excellent first Math app for your child. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-06-01 20:48:48 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Mystery Math Town

By Artgig Studio

(2.99) Mystery Math Town is one of the most engaging math fact apps I have ever encountered! It has amazing graphics and it sends the user on a mission to collect lightning bugs and gold coins in order to progress through the game. It allows the user to adjust the difficulty of the math questions asked, in addition (0-50), subtraction (0-50) and multiplication (1-10). It also allows you to select tally marks and dice as number choices as well, mixed in with numbers. In this app the user collects various numbers, and to progress through the houses you must unlock doors and windows by using numbers collected to solve math problems. Sometimes you can’t collect all the numbers in a room, and you may need to go back later to get a number that is needed for a future problem. This involves a higher level of critical thinking than most math apps out there because the user has to build the equations rather than just spit out memorized facts. It also allows for multiple user accounts so more than one child or student can use it at once. There are no ads or in app purchases, either. I highly recommend this app–the various rooms of the house have interactive portraits and other elements to keep kids playing for ages. ~Jennifer Erp on 2013-10-28 21:47:23 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

DragonBox Elements

By WeWantToKnow AS

(9.99–>2.99) DragonBox Elements is an amazing app for teaching geometry in a way that children will actually understand the concepts of it, yet will feel like they are merely playing a fun game. With over 100 games, 2 difficulty levels, brilliant graphics, support of multiple languages and up to 4 players, this app is worth the price. While it plays like a fun game, children will be exploring the properties of geometric shapes, ambles and reasoning, all things which many have trouble with. When the child starts a level, the goal is to free cute little creatures from within the geometric shapes. In addition to the app, you can have the user transfer what they have learned with the app to pen and paper, utilising resources found on the developer’s website, wewanttoknow.com. I highly recommend this app for those working on geometry at the middle school or early high school level. The app has no ads, IAPs, or social links. ~Angie Gorz on 2014-05-23 21:49:33 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Monkey Math School Sunshine

By THUP Games

(1.99) Monkey Math School Sunshine is a great, all around, fun app for young students. It covers basic counting, number ID and formation, patterns, simple addition and subtraction and ordering numbers through 10. It is the perfect app for students in preschool and kindergarten to use independently. I currently use it primarily with a first grader with cognitive delays and she is able to manipulate the app without problem and is motivated by the sound effects, the monkey and the predictable routine of the app while still challenging her. Teachers can personalize up to 3 accounts, but there is no way to track how the student does on each activity which is a little frustrating, however the knack feature is helpful because it will adjust the leveling depending on how the student is doing so they are never bored. ~Sarah Doyle on 2014-02-21 21:21:10 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

3rd Grade Math: Splash Math Worksheets Game for 9 chapters [HD Full]

By StudyPad, Inc.

(9.99) 3rd Grade Math: Splash Math Worksheets Game for 16 chapters [HD Full] This is a great app for general math practice across several skills. It covers a wide variety of skills on the third grade level, in a way that is designed to reinforce prior learning rather than teach new learning. Users can practice math facts, practice specific skills, or play the game using a mixed set of skills. Every 10 or 20 questions (this can be determined in settings) there is a stopping point where the student can earn part of the aquarium reward. My son enjoys watching his virtual fish and feeding them. The graphics are cute and the questions are age and grade appropriate. My only problem with the app is that my son loves the “oops, you got it wrong” sound in play mode, so sometimes intentionally misses one just to hear it! The app will track progress for multiple users and send email progress reports. There are no in-app purchases, but there are links to other apps and in the parent section there are more links. In all, a good way to allow for a solid review of learned skills and check progress. ~Jennifer Erp on 2013-12-10 17:34:58 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

(2.99) This game is fun as well as addicting for school kids and even adults! My preschooler is working on the basic addition problems right now, but settings include various museum levels using any or all four operations. Great for practicing both math and critical thinking skills. Very customizable to fit the user’s individual needs and very engaging graphics throughout! Great app to keep practicing math skills and have fun doing it! No IAP or Ads! ~Christie on 2013-11-02 20:31:37 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Todo K-2 Math Practice

By Locomotive Labs

(FREE) Todo K-2 Math Practice. This is a fantastic early math app for typically developing children, as well as those with special needs to use as a supplement to their school math program! In the app, children can choose from timed practice or free choice practice. In free choice practice, you choose an activity, and in some circumstances, a difficulty level. This app is amazing, as well as engaging. It covers counting, number sense, grouping, number tracing, addition and subtraction with visual supports, and much more! Plus, it detects poor handwriting, which makes for less frustration for those with special needs too. The app is just loaded with engaging and educational content. You have to slide a tiny tab at the top to access the teacher’s section. When you do, there is a button to like the page on Facebook, and follow on twitter. Other than that, there are no ads, IAPS, or other links. I highly recommend this app! ~Angie Gorz on 2013-08-15 23:37:13 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes – http://bit.ly/14s2B5y

Moose Math – by Duck Duck Moose

By Duck Duck Moose, Inc.

(2.99–>1.99) Moose Math – by Duck Duck Moose. As usual the developer has hit the nail on the head with this app. A fabulous app for teaching children Maths. My 4 year old very quickly worked out what she had to do in this one. I don’t know if she realised that she was actually doing math but she was having a world of fun. It starts of with level 1 and basic counting. As your child progresses through the levels it gets harder adding in additional ingredients instead of just the one. It will also start of with fruits in the blender and they will sometimes have to remove some. There are ones where pieces of fruit will float up and drop into the blender so they have to be very careful about the amount they have put in the blender. Once they have the required number of each fruit in the blender they press on the tick. They then get to choose their glass and drink the drink they have made. All this is just one shop in the app, not to mention the other 4 they can work on. A truly brilliant app that will have your preschoolers working on maths whilst having a ball. As a reward they also get to build their own city and decorate the buildings as they please. It also helps with fine motor control as well as matching, colours, fruits and more. We love Duck Duck Moose and this one is definitely a keeper. No IAP’s and all external links and parents section are locked from children. A completely child safe app which I am happy to leave my children with unsupervised. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-08-10 04:57:58 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Splash Math – Grades 1 to 5 | Fun learning elementary worksheets for kids

By StudyPad, Inc.

(FREE) Splash Math – Grades 1 to 5 is a very comprehensive and interactive app for children in grades 1 to 5. The app covers many math skills, is aligned with Common Core Standards, offers children encouragement, as well as fun reward games, support for 2 users, and data tracking. You can sign up for a free 7-day trial period, but after that, you will need to pay for a subscription, which costs $9.99 a month or 79.99 a year at the time of this review. The app has no ads, but does have an unlocked link to upgrade to a subscription on the home page, and the other parental locks are very easy to bypass most any child at grade 1 or older in my opinion. I think the app itself is great, but I believe, personally, that subscription price is a bit steep. If this is not an issue for you, then I would recommend it. ~Angie Gorz on 2013-11-10 21:49:23 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Team Umizoomi Math: Zoom into Numbers HD

By Nickelodeon

(6.99) Team Umizoomi Math: Zoom into Numbers HD. A load of fun. Your child has to unlock levels by completing each level before it. When they complete each level they get to choose from 1 of 3 badges which gets added to their rewards page. It is interactive so to complete tasks your child needs to tap on objects. The second level is my daughters favourite as she gets to pop bubbles. They spin a wheel and the number that is selected is the one they have to identify in the bubbles they pop. As well as just showing numbers they also need to be able to recognize numbers in dot form. This is a marvelous app for teaching about numbers. Suited more for children 3 years and up. Has no ads or IAP’s or any external links of any kind. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-08-05 21:03:43 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Madagascar Math Ops

By Knowledge Adventure

(2.99) Madagascar Math Ops. If your children are madagascar fans they are going to love this and won’t even know that you are getting them to practice their maths as they help the crazy penguins rescue Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria. They need to solve math problems to make juice for their jetpack. One they have filled this each time they need to work out which way to shoot the penguins to bust their friends out of the cages and get rid of the secret agents. Collect as many points as you can on each level to collect bananas and get the highest score possible. There are easy to follow instructions for each activity. There are different jetpacks which do different things. It is a really fun way to learn whilst playing. There are ads when you first start the game up and there are IAP’s and external links which are all locked from children. 123 KIDS FUN NUMBERS

By RosMedia

(2.99–>1.99) 123 Kids Fun Numbers is an excellent app for learning the numbers 1-10. The graphics and activities are playful and very reinforcing. There are 2 different modes in which to play. A mini game mode where you engage in 10 different activities with the corresponding number, providing a 1:1 correspondence for counting. It helps isolate and gives a child the time and space to integrate the concept of 1, 2, 3, etc. In the games section, there are 7 full games where the integration of the material is challenged. I like how this app provides a broad spectrum of activities – from a “Whack a Meerkat” game to number tracing. One of the games in particular – the car racing game also helps with right/left discrimination and integration. There is a reinforcer built into this app of making an aquarium, although I didn’t feel this to be necessary as the game in itself is highly reinforcing. This app, once learned, will provide hours of entertainment and independent play. It is also something that you could generalize into everyday activities. There is a lot of body humor in this app – burping, gas, etc. which some may find offensive, but I think most kids find this funny. There are links, discreetly hidden under a button which you must hold down…but no ads or IAP. I would highly recommend this to beginning counters. ~Jo Booth on 2013-06-18 17:10:59 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Bugs and Numbers

By Little Bit Studio, LLC.

(2.99) Bugs and Numbers. I work with kids on the spectrum, and I use all the “Bugs and” apps on almost a daily basis. Once I got my iPad, I paid the full price for all the “Bugs and” apps, because I could not wait for any sale. There are many – 18 to be specific – skills and challenges to this particular app. Identification, Matching, Laterality (Left/Right), Pattern Making, Sequencing…and so on. Spatial concepts help keep us grounded to where we are – near space, far space; tune us into movement and synchronizing or coordinating that movement; and it also helps with listening skills…I can’t say enough about the quality of these apps. Highly Recommended. ~Jo Booth on 2013-05-01 17:34:04 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Splash Math Kindergarten App – Children Learn Basic Concepts like Writing & Tracing Numbers 1-20 or 1-100, Number Line and Recognition, Order of Operation, Counting 123, Addition, Subtraction, Problem Solving Skills etc. with Math Drills and Flash Cards

By StudyPad, Inc.

(9.99) Splash Math Kindergarten: Fun Educational Worksheets for Counting Numbers, Addition and Subtraction

This is a wonderful preschool learning app. Even older children could enjoy it. The parent sets the goals for the child to achieve. The part that I really like is, that the parent can monitor the child’s progress; on the iPad as well as online, sent to their email. Then the parent can change the expected goals to fit what direction the child needs to precede. There are various levels for math problems to choose from simple counting, adding, subtracting, to geometry and measurements. Upon the third incorrect answer, the answer is explained and the game continuers

Once the goals are set, the child can play. The app has fabulous graphics and music to capture the child’s attention. The app provides equations based on what the set goals are. When the child finishes the set goal amount he is rewarded with a character that he can play with. The child can continue to play math problems after the goal is accomplished.

Overall, this app is a fun math game for the child. It is a recording app for the parents to monitor what the child is accomplishing.

I would recommend it.

Multiplications with Math Mathews

By Kiupe

(2.99) Math Mathews is an engaging math app with a reading component! Simply said it is AWESOME. This app has the ability to setup multiple users and track data. Read the Diary to understand the story behind the game. This is a great way to get your artic kiddos to practice generalizing their sounds and then they get to play the game. There is a practice section that allows the students to practice their math tables too. You and your kiddos will have fun with the Captain Mathews the Octopus traveling the Archipelago Waters to the Islands of Tahoga, Kariba and Hiriga! Don’t miss out on this engaging, education and fun app. One suggestion for an update would be to increase the font size on the text….but that doesn’t deter me from rating this as EXCELLENT all around and give an ACTbyJackieBryla approval! ~Jackie Bryla on 2013-05-06 11:14:21 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Multiplication Blocks

(1.99) Multiplication Blocks -Test your multiplication skills. You are given a number (product) and you have to find the two numbers that multiply together to give you the required number. The trick is, the numbers have to be touching, vertically or horizontally. You can change the speed, difficulty and mode, so it differentiates for individual students. It has no IAP, ads or connections to social media. It is fantastic for the classroom and I can’t wait to use it. Montessori 1st Operations

By Les Trois Elles Interactive

(3.99) Montessori 1st Operations is an excellent choice for teaching basic math skills. Addition, subtraction, halves, doubles and even and odds are explained and taught with corresponding relevancy using tables, grids and manipulatives. The presentation lends itself for off screen play and carryover, which is so essential for being able to apply and generalize the material. There are games and a fun reinforcer when you go through the different levels – a monster lab! Here you are able to make all sorts of kooky characters.
