Mental Math Help - cool brain training, math puzzles, and test prep for kids (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
By MyBlee
(3.99–>0.99) Mental Math Help – cool brain training, math puzzles, and test prep for kids (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). I really loved playing with this. Was a great refresher for me to exercise my brain and practice something I hadn’t done for a long time. There are 4 difficulty levels included in the app with varying ranges of equations. Each of the difficulty levels includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions. Providing your child gets at least 70% on each of these 5 tests then they can proceed to the trophy round. The trophy round consists of a mixture of all of the above equations. Kids can acquire a crystal, silver, bronze and gold trophy by completing all of the difficulty levels. A really good app and would be great training for an exam situation. The aim is to answer all the questions correctly in the fastest time possible. Even though there is a timer kids are not timed out at any stage so even children that struggle a bit have plenty of time to work out the answers. A couple of things I would like to have seen in the app would have been a tick button for children to press once they had the full answer written in. I would also like to have seen an eraser option. There was once question I wrote the numbers around the wrong way and I realised so tried to scribble over them and write the correct answer, however this didn’t work and it put all of the digits together. A great app for highschool kids and adults alike who just want to practice their math knowledge. No IAP’s however there are numerous external links none of which are locked. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-05-29 18:03:43 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Duckie Deck Huff n’ Puff
By Duckie Deck Development
(1.99–>FREE) Duckie Deck Huff n’ Puff is a fun little app for teaching toddlers about breath as well as the fun of seeing what happens on the screen when they blow into the microphone. This is a great experimental way for young kids to learn about wind and what the consequences are of wind. What it can do and more. Simply by blowing near the microphone your kids can watch amazing things happen on the screen. Then they touch on the cute little character in the corner to change to a different scene and then again blow to see something else happen. There are no IAP’s or external links which make this safe for kids. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-03-13 01:53:20 ==> User rating: 3 Recommended: Yes

PlayScience III
By PlayAppsInc
(7.99–>0.99) PlayScience III. This is a great addition to the series and follows well from play science II. The app in itself can be used as a study tool for kids. It does have a lot of the same questions as play science II however I don’t know if this is just for kids to recap what they originally learnt. There are quizzes asking children things they have previously learnt. As they choose a subject your child can go over what they have already learnt. You can choose to skip this if you wish. There are memory games and puzzle games all related to the topic you are working on. There are 6 topics included including plants, animals and more to help your child in their learning. Could be used in a classroom setting as a fun quiz for kids, or can be used at home to practice or further their knowledge. For each question your child gets correct they receive coins which they can then use to purchase plants and animals for their aquarium which is like a reward system for them. Kids must be able to read well to play this. This is a very fun little app designed to bring fun into science and learning. There are no IAP’s and external links are locked from kids. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-01-30 15:41:05 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

FingerPaint Studio EDU – playing together creatively with foldapps
By Cribster
(3.99–>1.99) FingerPaint Studio EDU – playing together creatively with foldapps. This is good for working on creativity in children. It also works on sequencing so kids can create their on mini animations. The app has step by step instructions however I would like to have seen a little video to better explain it rather than pop up boxes so that you can refer back to the instructions at a later date. Kids can choose from different backgrounds to start off their animation. They then use the provided pencils in 2 sizes to create their animation. As they complete each scene this can be copied to the next scene so that it all runs together and they can just add more and more to each scene. There is not a huge range of colour choice and I was a bit disappointed to see that I could not move my existing characters around at all without completely redrawing them. The app is fairly easy to use but for the money I was expecting a bit more. There are no IAP’s and external links are locked from kids. ~Sharon Turriff on 2014-05-29 16:11:00 ==> User rating: 3 Recommended: Yes

Montessori Numberland HD
By Les Trois Elles Interactive
(3.99–>0.99) Montessori Numberland HD – Learn numbers with Montessori Numberland by Les Trois Elles is a stunningly beautifully crafted app. It covers the numbers zero to nine, giving opportunities to practice counting, through 1:1 correspondence. The graphics and activities are focused on the task of counting and the relevancy of numbers without the extraneous bells and whistles that occlude the subject matter. There are no IAPs or ads. There is a link to other apps under a secured button on the parent’s page. As with all the Les Trois Elle’s apps, this one is highly recommended. ~Jo Booth OT on 2014-01-27 15:33:23 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Have You Heard – kids interactive book app
By Yoozoo Limited
(1.99–>0.99) Have You Heard – kids interactive book app is a cute story app that reinforces the importance of listening carefully. The animals on the farm keep retelling why the farmer is going to town, with things like bag of flour getting changed to bag of flowers, until the end story does not really resemble the beginning. I used this app with two first grade classrooms and both absolutely loved the story and were challenged by the game at the end (the user is asked to identify what items each character named throughout the story). The narration has a strong Australian accent, but I used that as an opportunity to discuss different cultures. The kids, even the ESOL ones, were able to understand the story elements despite the accent. There are some interactive elements, although not on every page. I felt that each interactive element added to the fun of the story. At the end of the story I had 40 first graders begging me to “play it again”, so I think they enjoyed it! There are no in-app purchases or ads. ~Jennifer Erp on 2013-11-19 19:39:41 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Rumpelstiltskin by Fairytale Studios
By Fairytale Studios
(1.99–>FREE) Rumpelstiltskin by Fairytale Studios is an interactive storybook which incorporates a range of activities and interactions to involve your child and keep them interested in the story. I love that they have included a choice of 3 narrators for the story so you can choose who you like best. I also love the fact that they have black and white images in the story and the first time you tap on them they turn to colour and the second time you tap they animate. A wonderful version of this classic tale. There are also activities you can complete from the main page. I would like to have seen the text highlighted as they story was being read so children who cannot read can follow the story. There are No IAP’s however external links are not locked from children. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-09-12 05:46:38 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes

Azawhistle Kids Everything Has a Home: Tejas & Lollipop’s Great Clean Up!
By Leslie Hendry
(1.99–>FREE) AzawhistleKids. This is a neat eBook that tells the tale of Tejas, who has an enormous mess of a room, so he decides to try to tackle it, bit becomes overwhelmed at first. Luckily, his dog Lollipop is very wise, and knows the ways of yoga, and uses these methods to think clearly. He teaches them to Tejas, and he is able to clean his room. His mother is so proud. The app teaches kids that when we are able to keep calm and harness our energy, we can accomplish a lot. There are no ads, or IAPS, but the app does have external links to e-mail and social media on a share button on the home page, as well as on a pop-up tab at the bottom of page, throughout the app. ~Angie Gorz on 2013-05-30 19:32:02 ==> User rating: 4 Recommended: Yes – http://bit.ly/17924uU
Spell Pop
By Zero’s Game Design
(1.99–>0.99) Spell Pop. This is a wonderful spelling app. Use the popular sight word list provided or create your own lists. With each word you record your voice saying the word so they can learn how the word sounds as well as how it is spelt. Children have fun popping the bubbles to spell each word. Suitable for at home use or in the classroom. When first setting up the parent or teacher has to choose a password so the student or child cannot access lists or exit out of the spelling screen without the password. External links are also in this section which has to be accessed via password so there is no possible way of a child accidently buying something. Brilliant app that we will be using in our house and I highly recommend it. ~Sharon Turriff on 2013-05-25 23:33:52 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Prancing, Dancing Lily – An Interactive Storybook by Marsha Diane Arnold
By Fat Red Couch, Inc.
(1.99–>0.99) Prancing Dancing Lily is a beautiful story app about a young cow who simply does not fit the mold. Lily loves to dance and cows simply don’t dance! So Lily, who is to be lead cow one day, decides she must set out on an adventure to see where she fits in the world. This e-book is perfect for all children, neuro-typical and neuro-diverse. It teaches a strong moral lesson: there is a place for everyone in this world and that place is home. Throughout the eBook inclusion and acceptance are inferred and I firmly believe such lessons could solve all the world’s hurts… if only these lessons could be learnt. This app rates a standing ovation five out of five stars from this lady! I think every single person should read it. It’s simple, it’s silly, and it’s solidly true. ~Leora Smith Appleby on 2013-04-12 00:39:28 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes

Multiplications with Math Mathews
By Kiupe
(2.99–>0.99) Math Mathews. This app is a very comprehensive math game made, built for kids, as well as adults to practice multiplication tables. That being said, it is as much fun as a video game! You can join the crew of Captain Mathews, on his pirate ship, in search of parts of the lost necklace of Sylla! This app has three sections on the pirate map, which were created with speech therapists and based on three differents methods to practice math, which explains, why I am better at 2 out of 3 of them! Yes, I am the mom and could not put the game down! I admit it! The app also has a captain’s log, notebook, a practice section, a section to keep track of your players (meet the crew), and a room for your treasure. This amazing app tracks progress, you can create up to 7 player accounts, making ideal for classrooms or large families. Did I mention the amazing graphics? There are no ads or in-apps purchases either. ~Angie Gorz on 2013-04-06 01:53:27 ==> User rating: 5 Recommended: Yes – http://bit.ly/13d0KUn
Zac And Zoey – The Penguin Prankster
By Paper Boat Apps
(FREE with disc IAP) Zac And Zoey – The Penguin Prankster is an animated tale of Zac and Zoey’s school trip to the zoo, during which an older trouble -maker lets the penguins out. The two help a new zoo keeper catch all the missing penguins as well as the culprit. This app has a little it of educational value, and may engage some young children. It is longer then the first Zac and Zoey app, and does have fun graphics with a few interactive scenes, but there it is not a book, there are no words to go with the story. It is more like a mini TV show. The app has both banner ads and full page pop ads that snow up at multiple times as you watch the apposite. You can remove the ads via an IAP, which is secured. However, the large pop up ads that come up in the middle of the app are not secured at all. They go directly to the App Store. The banner ad is done in such a way that it cuts off part of the picture. I would like to see this app updated with all links secured, and with a bit more educational content, personally. It has a nice message, but I would not recommend it, which is affected by the overwhelming ads and the fact that some are not secured. ~Angie Gorz on 2014-05-29 19:37:43 ==> User rating: 3 Recommended: No
