Outwitters is a game by ‘One Man Left’, the same guy who developed the game called ‘Tilt to Live’. Outwitters is a turn-based action strategy game that takes place on a hexagonal board with three different factions battling. The inspiration of designing and developing this game comes from the simple colour palette from Adobe Illustrator.

Outwitters for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

The basic objective in Outwitters is to get to the enemy base and destroy them, but each of your minion troops can only move once and attack once per turn. You get 5 wits on each turn, wits are nothing but your chances to play the game; use the chances correctly or save them for dangerous attacks. Any action you place on the board of hexagonal cells will cost one Wit each time you move or attack. You also use wits to create new minions on your spawn space. Jumping on to bonus spaces will give you an extra wit. You don’t have to spend all of your wits to complete a turn, but just hit the ‘done’ button any time to save some to redeem them in form or minions. All you need to do is, implement your strategic techniques by correctly choosing from the different minions you have, and place them on the correct hexagon cell to stop the enemies getting into your area. You can see your steps highlighted as far as you can move, but enemies may be hiding in the dark. And there are also special spots on the board which will provide you with more points as you move on them. There are 3 types of game modes from which you can select and play; League Play – a system that is designed to pair up with the users of similar skill to have fun; Friendly Game is also of the same type where 1vs1 or 2vs2 players join randomly or create a new battle. These are the modes that are bonded with the game centre profile for you to play. Whereas ‘Pass n’ Play’ mode lets the players to play the game by just passing their iDevice to their mutual opponent.

There are 8 different minion characters and each unit type has its own strengths and weaknesses, they play as you move them around hexagonal maps and challenge your rival units, namely ‘Boomshell’ (transforms into mortar cannon adding 2 points), Mobi (teleports any ally space beside it), Scrambler (converts any enemy to teammate permanently), Runner (super fast, vision across the battlefield), Soldier (balance of speed, power and durability), Medic (boosts health +1), Snipers (deadly from a distance) and Heavy (incredibly powerful). There are six maps out of which 2 are free to play i.e. the Sharkfood Island and the Long Nine, but the rest like Glitch, Foundry, Sweetie plains and Peekaboo are locked and are under development. The controls are simple; all you have to do is tap the space with your team colour and set them to attack. There are few easy tutorials and hints (for character- on the top of the screen) appear for new game players of this genre. The graphics are great and the details that have gone into making each character look amazing are worthy of appreciation. But in the gameplay environment you can only see as far as your army can move. And that isn’t the end- you can view your opponent’s last played action by hitting the replay button, which is an added advantage in the game.

If you are looking for simple gameplay and if you aren’t satisfied with games in this genre on the app store then Outwitters is worth giving a try, and in addition this is free to play, where as the developers charged 1.99$ for their previous release.
