Please refer to the article published " International trade expert discuss realistic picture of US economy in 2025." , published August 10th 2013 http://globalinternationalsellers.pr.co/55826-international-trade-expert-discuss-realistic-picture-of-us-economy-in-2025, would give you a good idea what factors are fueling awareness and growth of healthcare & medical equipments globally.

The medical industry is one of the most important fields of life. Health is the greatest asset in the world and without it; every other thing makes no sense. Clearly, man is faced with lots of health challenges due to several reasons which might include the kind of lifestyle we live, the food we eat, environmental influences. Consequently, the medical industry does its best to provide out of the box solutions to each of the health problem plaguing the human race. This has led to the discovering of many medical devices, pharmaceuticals, surgical processes and devices and so forth. Obviously, the advance in the medical industry is a beacon of hope as it provides solution to lots of concerns and issues facing the human race today.

A medical device refers to any instrument, contrivance, implement, apparatus, machine, in vitro reagent, implant or any other similar device or accessory which is used in diagnosing diseases or other medical conditions as well as curing, mitigating, treating and preventing diseases and infections. Medical devices do not undergo chemical actions or reactions in the body; they are also designed to affect the structure or functionality of the body without undergoing any metabolism or similar reactions in the body. The rising upwards trend in populations growth, environmental pollution including global warming, different policies in context of health prevention are contributing in increasing demand of medical devices in future. In order to evaluate growing demand of medical devices as claimed in blogs, I will illustrate and analyze different factors involved in an unprecedented growth of devices by 2030 and effectiveness of IT to resolve the issues and role SAP HANA, Oracle, and different agencies like CDC would play.

GROWTH OF THE MEDICAL DEVICE INDUSTRY

The medical device industry in the world at large is a huge industry. It is highly innovative and competitive. In 2011, it was estimated that over $300 billion medical devices were sold. The largest medical device market is the United States of America, followed by Japan. In 2010, about $100 billion medical device sales were recorded in the United States and about $50 billion sales were recorded in Japan. A report states that the medical device industry in the United States is estimated to grow by 6.6 percent between 2012 and 2017.

Furthermore, (GCC) the six Gulf Corporation Countries said that the market for medical devices in the region will grow by 4.8 percent per year. China made an annual increase in terms of medical device sales in one year duration. The worth of medical devices imported into Chinese health market reached $8 billion. Owing to Chinese high population, advancement in economy and health care, it is estimated that it will soon become the second largest medical device market in the world.

The per capita spending in the healthcare sector in the world is increasing more than the rate of income in the sector. If the increase progresses in this sequence, it is expected that spending will double by 2050 amounting to between 20 and 30 percent GDP for some economies. The major motivations and drivers for spending in the medical device market will be advances in technology and worldwide market penetration.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH

The US Census Bureau (International) estimates that the world population continues to increase irrespective of the decreasing population growth rate. It is estimated that by 2029, the total population of the world will be about 8 billion. The remarkable increase in the average age of the US as well as the trends in health needs of seniors have influenced the medical device industry tremendously. Due to increasing pressures to curtail costs and expenses as well as the discouragement with regards to extended stay in healthcare facilities, places such as nursing homes, hospices, and patients’ homes will be leveraged as alternative settings for delivering healthcare. The table-1 and figure-1are presenting projected world population and growth in future and consequently increases demand of medical devices.

An amazing segment of the industry with promising future is home healthcare. It is obvious that this setting will soon become a specific sector of the industry.

Nowadays, there is a rapid increase of high tech medical devices in the lowest technology products. Increase in population and advancement in technology will continue to increase the demands for top notch and state of the art medical devices such as defibrillators and pacemakers. Demands will also increase in the United States as a result of the expansion of coverage by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). This is simply because greater number of Americans will be able to access health insurance and therefore in accordance to the preventive treatment acts of PPACA, they will seek out doctors for their illnesses more than they used to and this will consequently result to increase in medical devices demands and sales.

Table-1: Actual and projected world population growth rate US Census Bureau

Other factors that would affect the demands of medical devices include environmental factors such as global warming, advancement in technology, health care plans like CDC as well as the aging population. This has caused regulatory agencies to increase their staff strength so as to be able to appraise the increasing complexity and array of medical devices to effectively treat patients. Global warming is the major cause of carcinogenic diseases including eye problem and skin cancer.

Areas of Opportunity

There are about 17 – 18 different categories in the medical devices industry. These categories include cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopedic, aesthetic devices, healthcare IT and many more. These categories continue to increase in geometric progression. The fastest growing categories include neurology, aesthetic devices and orthopedic.

Due to the aging population, geographic expansion, emerging markets and global warming several catalysts for growth opportunity such as hospital admission and procedural volume pressures, imbursement pressures and increasing regulatory involvements, healthcare reforms affect new product launches. A survey made in the US in 2010 revealed that the elderly population, about 40 million people, represents about 13 percent of the population and they consume one-third of the total healthcare. An estimation made by the US federal government shows that by 2030, the population of elderly people will reach 72 million and thus this will result to a higher demand and utilization of medical devices. Medical device companies aim at reaching forth into new lucrative markets owing to the numerous growth constraints in the legacy markets.

EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING ON HUMAN HEALTH

Factors resulting to changing weather patterns such as temperature, precipitation, rise in the sea level and so forth bring about changing climate in the human environment. This is also indirectly caused by changes in water, food quality, and air as well as changes in ecosystems, economy, agriculture and industry. The effects of climatic change in the world today is comparatively small but are estimated by increase progressively in every country as revealed by an assessment of the scientific literature.

The effect of climatic change on human health was studied by the World Health Organization in 2004. According to the study, climatic changes result to 3% diarrhea, 3% malaria and 3.8% tropical fever deaths in the world. Thus, in 2004, climatic change is responsible for 0.2% deaths in the world. Child deaths took about 85% in this study.

Impact of Infectious diseases

Extreme weather patterns which arise from global warming and climatic changes lead to the increase of re-emerging and new infectious diseases. In some regions of the world, the extreme weather patterns create prolonged rainy seasons whereas in other regions it creates prolonged droughts. In many other regions it introduces new climates. This simply creates a type of climate that can accommodate insects and vectors for a long time and also providing them their required environment to multiply. It also creates an environment that allows new vectors to be breed and survive.

Stronger hurricane is also another consequence of global warming. This causes lots of menaces on land and oceans and provides a favorable environment for vectors causing diseases to breed. It also results to increased winds. The winds convey vectors located thousands of miles away and this leads to the introduction of new disease in a place where such disease has never been.

Diseases caused by mosquitoes are the greatest threats man has ever known. Such diseases include malaria, elephantiasis, yellow fever, tropical fever, Rift Valley fever and so forth. Studies showed that these diseases prevail more in regions of the world where extreme flooding and draught occurred. Studies pointed out that there is risk that the developed world will experience malaria once again because of the warming up of the climate.

Another vector that thrives in warmer temperatures is tick. Such temperature gives room for the vector to feed and grow at a fast rate. The carrier of Lyme disease, the black legged tick borrows in soil when not feeding. Many other diseases occur due to extreme weather and a few of them include tuberculosis, hantavirus, onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis. The major cause of the cholera outbreak is environmental impact.

These increased temperatures; even in places where malaria is not prevalent, climatic variation has direct impact on people’s health. In higher altitude regions of Africa and South America, the risk of developing malaria of recent years is higher due to increase in temperature. Temperature trends and changes by 2 or 3 degrees is causing mosquito larvae to grow and adult mosquitoes to carry the disease to people who have suffered the infection previously. These also result to complications in people who have not been exposed to the disease as they suffer from cerebral malaria which causes mental disability, paralysis and consequently death.

Increase in temperature has the ability to cause the spread in epidemics that can erase an entire population of people. Thus, there is need to track the species and number of insects which carry these infections and also people who are infected in areas where malaria has not been before.

Dengue fever, otherwise known as tropical fever, is an infectious disease caused by the dengue virus. The virus is usually found in tropical regions and the vector is malaria. This fever unimaginably increased since 1970 and since them it has continued to increase. Urbanization, population increase, increased international travel and global warming are believed to be the major causes of this disease.

HIV/AIDS

Climatic changes and HIV/ AIDS are sources of dread in the world today. Climatic change is related to HIV AIDS as it limits the amount of food available in the society. Report shows that climatic changes, increase in the severity of draughts and floods.

Due to climatic changes, the spread of HIV/AIDS may increase. Climatic changes forces people to live in close quarts to each other and thus gender inequality may be aggravated which can easily lead to the transmission of the disease. Due to climatic changes lots of people can easily migrate to other parts of the world. Migrants are often far from their spouses and family and many of them live low quality life and do not easily have access to medical care. This can further lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The funds available for migrants will be reduced due to climatic changes. Since more funds are spent on putting damaged infrastructures into shape, less funds will be channeled to HIV/AIDS prevention programs and thus leading to the increase in the infection.

Extreme weather conditions with huge devastating effects such as Hurricane Katrina can lead to mental imbalance because of the homelessness, disenfranchisement, stress and suffering caused by the hazard. Increased risk of suicide is also indirectly caused by climatic change. Extreme weather condition leads to increase in suicide, according to a study. This was obvious in Australia where crop failure and despair was caused by draught. This left most farmers with nothing and caused them to go insolvent, impoverished and to sell their belongings as well as borrow lots of money. Over a hundred farmers in the region committed suicide in 2007. Other consequences include violence, depression and so forth.

What Should Be Done?

To arrest these conditions, all hands should be on desk including the government and individuals. There is need to develop an improved way of ascertaining the outbreak of dengue fever, cancer, Type 1 diabetes and HIV/AIDS and so forth. To achieve this, environmental factors have to be appropriately monitored and prevention measure plans like CDC should be addressed.

ROLE OF CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) IN United States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established health and wellness risk evaluations (HRAs), framework, follow-up activities, and monitoring of progress towards achieving health enhancement objectives (described in the literature as the HRA Plus process). Structures was developed on the basis of three recently performed step-by-step literature assessments and skilled input from doctors, analysts, participants of medical associations, health care members, and CDC subject specialists. Expert point of view was made use of where the evidence base was limited. The targeted beneficiaries of this framework at Medicare are of 65 years and older but can likewise be used to younger beneficiaries.

About 38 million Americans are presently grown old 65 years or older. By 2050, the number of Americans of this age will greater than double, broadening to almost 89 million. This increasing number of elderly adults presents important obstacles for US nation's public health and health care devices unless improvements take place in populace health. Majority of Medicare recipients are treated for five or even more persistent problems annually, and coordination of their care is testing. In one study, the average Medicare enrollee saw a median of 2 primary care physicians and five professionals operating in 4 various methods annually; those with 5 or additional chronic conditions see an average of 14 different doctors annual.

Evidence recommends that multidisciplinary groups offering primary, second and tertiary prevention services could deliver higher-quality treatment at reasonably low expense, and can accomplish substantial decreases in mortality, morbidity, and attendant wellness spending. Medicare's adoption of the Annual Wellness Visit, as directed by the Affordable Care Act, provides the possible to improve shipment of health promo and illness prevention solutions in medical settings. A central element of that go to be the tailored prevention strategy established via a process explained in this record as HRA Plus where medical and behavior interventions marketing excellent health can flow normally. For the HRA Plus to be successful, it is crucial that it be regarded by clinicians as straightforward, simple to implement, and meaningful to both professionals and clients.

Research verified that health and disease prevention regimens directed at a working age populace could produce price savings. A meta-analysis revealed that these programs obtain a medical expense saving of $3.27 for every $1.00 spent for health advertising activities. Nationwide decreasing diabetes and hypertension occurrence by 5 % would certainly lessen medical expenses around $9 billion every year over five years. With resulting reductions in co-morbidities and chosen associated health conditions, averted expenses could possibly increase to around $24.7 billion each year over 10 years.

The CDC recommendations intend to accomplish the adhering to targets:

Provide advice to carriers supplying clinical preventive care, health advertising, and disease management services on methods to make use of HRAs complied with by evidence-based health and health improvement regimens.

Eventually, lower health disparities with using HRAs and follow-up interferences that is linguistically and culturally modified and are available to individuals with handicaps.

Ultimately, improve health and wellness end results by recognizing patients' modifiable health and wellness dangers and giving follow-up behavior adjustment treatments that are carried out gradually.

If the trend continues in the United States, over 50 percent of the adult population will be obese by 2030.

SAP HANA SPEEDS CANCER RESEARCH AND RESULTS

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected. Lots of factor including environmental pollution are responsible for this infectious disease.150000 inpatients and 600000 including outpatient treatments are handled by Charite Berlin, the biggest university hospital in Europe each year. The hospital has about 3800 doctors and scientists and they are all dedicated and committed to providing the best health care as well as conducting countless numbers of researches. The enterprise is also dedicated to providing accurate reports as well as the required success analysis.

With the aid of Charite’s mature analytics program, they are able to appropriately appraise and evaluate how they can use patients’ records, data and results within their enterprise. The number one goal of researches is to examine umpteen numbers of data points and consequently make necessary queries within the confines of a flexible reporting environment. They also want to make localized analysis with ease, speed and accuracy just like everyone would make searches in Google.

To achieve this purpose, the medical institute put lots of investments into SAP in-memory technology in order to take advantage of the big data provided by the technology for retrieving, sorting, analyzing and reporting medical records. On introducing the SAP HANA to the hospital, they held workshops to evaluate some major questions such as how the technology can help the institute to improve as well as how the tool can assist in research and changes in patient cases. The team selected patients in the cancer database for clinical trials in its first project with SAP HANA. A good example of the clinical trial relates to a research partnership with a commercial sponsor. This was a small opportunity which must be leveraged by the hospital to get the study, participants was well as the funding they require.

Today, data merged from Charite’s cancer and medical admin databases are analyzed by the hospital using SAP HANA Oncolyzer in order to find the best candidate for each new trial they want to make. Based on the study criteria, the Oncolyzer makes searches and examinations on different information such as age, gender, risk factors, and types of tumor, diagnosis and treatment so as to find the best candidate for the given trial. When DNA will be added to the data set in the future, it is expected that the Oncolyzer will analyze up to 500000 data points for each patient. The SAP HANA Oncolyzer gives Charite competitive advantage and edges over other research partners since it analyzes both structured and unstructured data. This goes a long way to speed up the identification process.

Personalized Patient Treatments

One of the major difficulties in the healthcare sector is determining the best and the most appropriate treatment method for patients. Thus, there is need for the entire process, categories and chains involved in the medical industry to become networked, efficient and poised at enhancing the quality of the treatment methods offered in the industry.

To solve the challenge, health care providers can leverage the state of the art patient data provided by doctors and researches with the use of mobile devices in order for them to easily access every data provided by different sources at any point in time when visiting patients wherever they are.

A good example of this is the SAP HANA and SAP Electronic Medical Record (SAP EMR) which have helped hospitals a in Europe and US to easily collect, control and filter their data with speed and accuracy for efficiency in patient care, teaching as well as for research purposes.

HANA Oncolyzer is another wonderful example of this and with this device, researchers and clinicians will be able to effectively retrieve data for each patient and analyze them in the patient’s bed. Researchers from various institutes including Hasso Plattner Institute, Charite and SAP provided a mobile solution which merged intuitive user interface with immediate analysis. This goes a long way to eliminate laborious and inefficient manual searches in distributed database systems.

FUTURE GROWTH AND HOUSING FACILITIES- GENOME ANALYSIS

At the present, finding the dissimilarity between the genome data of cancer patients and health people takes two days. This simply leads to:

Inefficiency in cancer detection based on DNA matching. Hospitals that perform cancer detection based on this makes poor decisions.

Lack of insights in patient data which results to delay in the discovery of new drugs and also increase in the related costs.

It will be easier and possible to administer high end medical treatments to lots of patients by using SAP HANA as the genome data platform. According to MKI which offers cloud based genome analytic service, with the use of SAP HANA the genome comparison which took up to two days can be effectively done in 20 minutes.

They provide three genome analysis process steps which include:

Case Analysis: This has to do with Fragment Extraction, High Speed Entry and Genome DNA extraction. All the cases are first collected and then preprocessed with Hadoop, a process known as fragment extraction. When this is done, HANA can then be brought to the scene. It is employed in fast data analysis in order to ascertain the patterns followed by the genome fragments. When this is done, the relationship between the genome and the case can be found.

Data Consumption: Having obtained the genome fragment library and the relationship to the case, the doctor can then retrieve the patient’s genome and relay it to the appropriate system in charge in order for the genome fragment comparison to be done. With the knowledge library obtained, the most appropriate treatment for the patient can be easily recommended by the doctor.

Case Study: The new case obtained in the above process can then be relayed to the researcher in order for him to perform more study on the case so as to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the knowledge library.

REGULATIONS AND DISTRIBUTION OF MEDICAL DEVICES

Various government agencies in different parts of the world are responsible for regulating the manufacturing and distribution of medical devices in the world. Thus, a great deal of revenues is spent by life science companies in establishing agreements and product safety approaches. In order to ensure that the medical devices they supply are safe for use and also efficient, they need to obtain and analyze feedbacks and reports in reference to their medical devices from doctors, nurses and patients on time.

Medtronic is largest medical technology firm in the world. It functions in 120 different countries and exists in 270 locations. The company provides services to up to 7 million patients in one year which amounts to one patient in each four seconds. They aim at increasing the efficiency of their services in order to provide service to one patient each second. Medtronic data warehouse was able to process one patient feedback record per second in 2011. However, the system became less efficient as the volume of data from patients and healthcare professionals increased. The data warehouse was unable to read large text files which contained complaints from customers. However, they require to effectively analyzing these complaints as fast as possible in order to easily solve problems with products with speed.

Medtronic was able to develop a common complaint handling system which can be used in their various business units and geographies by leveraging SAP HANA. The global complaint handling ensured visibility in the entire product lines as well as efficiency in response and reporting. They were able to extract text encapsulating customer complaints into HANA from SAP CRM. They used SAP Business Object for reporting and developed an integrated data model in SAP HANA. This results to efficiency in handling queries. With the tool, they were able to handle queries which took up to four hours in three or four minutes and also they could handle up to 15000 long texts.

The main benefits include:

Remarkable improvement in the complaint process and response with respect to their customer service.

High end streamlining and reporting process which led to reduced costs of sales.

Enhancement in agreement through the efficient and easy collection of complaints.

Enhanced insights due to the high end analysis of unstructured data.

TYPE 1 DIABETES R&D CENTER

The type 1 diabetes R&D Center in Seattle, Washington was launched by Novo Nordisk in 2012 as a part of Novo Nordisk’s Diabetes Research Unit. The sole aim of establishing the center is to merge basic research and early proof of concept trials. The primary target of researchers at the center is to discover new immunological and vaccine treatment for type 1 diabetes based on antigen in a translational research method.

Lots of attentions have been given to type-2 diabetes by researchers and pharmaceutical companies in the past years. This is simply because of the large number and increase in the number of people suffering the ailment. Treatment with insulin is required for type 1 diabetes.

Matthias Von Herrath, a prominent auto-immune disease researcher and the winner of 2008 American Diabetes Association Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award is the Director of the Type 1 Diabetes R&D Center. His major goal is to speed up clinical testing which has to do with the combination of new therapies and vaccines based on antigens in the early stage of the treatment process using translational research approach.

THE USE OF ORACLE IN THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY

MEASURES ADOPTED FOR ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH OUTCOME DATA IN US

Lots of systems are introduced by information technology in order to effectively evaluate and monitor human health problems. Such systems may include:

Information system for State Health Researchers

Environmental Public Health Trackers

Information system for Local Health Departments

Researches done on the correlation of health and the environment

Asthma and the school environment

Air quality and birth outcomes

Drinking water and birth outcomes

The evaluation of the characterizations of air quality under the umbrella of PHASE, Public Health Air Surveillance Evaluation

The EPHT (Environmental Public Health Tracking) program in New York has the aim of developing a better health and environmental information system. They achieve this by progressively collecting and studying health and environmental information.

The National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network is made up of the New York State Department of Health and 17 other states and the New York City. The Health Tacking Network is an effort led by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention and it is established to provide consistent data on the environment and health. With these data, the environment can be further protected as they would go a long way to support programs, policies and researches.

Anyone with internet access can easily view the select environmental health data, charts and maps launched by the New York State. With these data, users can easily learn more about the environment and health. You can as well connect to the Center of Disease Control’s Environmental Public Health Tracking Network national data.

One of the first Environmental Public Health Tracking multistate tracking trials was public health surveillance evaluation (PHASE). In areas where there is no air quality monitors as well as other areas, the approaches for ascertaining exposures to outdoor ozone levels and fine particles were evaluated by the New York State Health Department in collaboration with Wisconsin, Maine, the US Center of Disease Control and Prevention and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Hospitalization data for asthma and heart attacks were used in evaluating air pollution estimates. Consequential to this study, air quality estimates in both areas where monitors are located and areas where there are no monitors are provided to the state health departments. EPA brings to together different factors such as meteorological information, emission data and environmental data in order to produce ozone and fine particulate matter air quality estimates.

Furthermore, the New York State Department of Health developed a software app known as C-CAT, now used by many state health departments and universities, designed for determining the correlation between health and short term effect of air pollution.

With the aid of tracking, data and tools can be brought into the hand of people who can use them to protect New York communities. It is a partnership program. Included in the list of tracking partners are information scientists, scientists, environmental scientists, statisticians, policy makers, healthcare experts, educators, state and local government officials, academia, advocates and everyone who can wield data to ascertain how health and the environment are related to each other.

In addition, with the aid of tracking, federal and state government agencies can be brought together under one umbrella to have a common focus and share assistances, data and technical guidance. Such agencies include the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and lots of other environmental and state health agencies. These are very pivotal to solving the numerous health and environmental challenges we are faced today and in the future.

Conclusion

Health is highly pivotal to the human life and society. It is the sole responsibility of the government as well as individuals to ensure that quality health is maintained in the society. With the increase in the aging population of the world, global warming and Obamacare program, it is quite apparent that the health needs of the world as well as the demand of medical devices will surge.

Information technology is very important in the health industry to be able to solve the major health challenges due rising of demand of medical devices in future. Fast retrieval of data and its analysis are important in health centers and hospitals. Different value chains in the health industry must work together with the use of high end information technology systems so as to solve the impending health needs of the world. The high end technology and data management tools provided by SAP ( HANA ) and Oracle ( Exalytics ) are highly efficient, with SAP HANA taking a lead, and can be used in solving most of the health challenges we face in the today’s world and consequently in the future.
