The Central government has declared a one-day mourning on death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. It has also decided to accord state funeral to the departed leader. National Flags at all government buildings are flying at half mast. All the ceremonial functions have been cancelled.

The Tamil Nadu government has also announced a seven-day state mourning. The state government also declared a three-day holiday for all educational institutions.

The 68-year old AIADMK Chief , who had suffered cardiac arrest on Sunday evening, breathed her last at 11:30 last night at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai. She was admitted to the hospital on the 22nd of September following complaints of fever and dehydration.

Following her demise, Ms Jayalalithaa’s body was taken to her Poes Garden residence before being taken to Rajaji Hall. Lakhs of people from all walks of life are paying their last respects to the departed soul. The police have been streamlining the swarming crowd with great difficulty.

The last rites will be performed at MGR Memorial in Marina beach area of Chennai at 4.30 PM today. Meanwhile, arrangements are in place at the MGR memorial.

AIADMK Chief’s loyalist O Panneerselvam was sworn-in as the Chief Minister at a sombre ceremony at Raj Bhawan along with all the ministers in the erstwhile Jayalalithaa Cabinet. AIADMK MLAs met at the party headquarters to elect Mr Panneerselvam as the successor to Ms Jayalalithaa.
