Director of the Antigua & Barbuda Meteorological Services Keithley Meade said that recruiting fresh faces to work within the meteorological service is an “ongoing challenge”.

He told OBSERVER media that a lot of secondary school students tend not to do subjects related to the field, partially due to the lack of importance given to the sciences by the community and the world by extension.

Meade said the fact that students stray from subjects like Physics and Mathematics is affecting “the whole idea of having the type of persons who can be trained for this field”.

“These types of subjects are not subjects that people gravitate to just like that,” he said.

Meade admitted that this issue is far more than a local one.

“Right across, we’re finding that some students are not doing as well in the sciences and it follows all the way up, not just from the schools but right into adult life and eventually could affect the field,” he noted.
