Anne Arundel Volunteer Firefighters Association
Volunteers 16+ years of age, cadets and adults needed as firefighters and emergency medical technicians for local volunteer fire companies. 22 of the county’s 29 fire stations are partly staffed with volunteers. There are also auxiliaries who help with office support, fund-raising and community service programs. Training provided. Each Volunteer Fire Company has its own rules for membership. Potential volunteers should apply for membership at the Volunteer Fire Company where they live. Training and uniforms are provided. Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc. (BNI)
Help BNI promote fair housing for all people in the Baltimore Metro area, including Anne Arundel County. Volunteers, 21 years of age and up, are trained to visit housing properties and meet with real estate representatives to inquire about the rental and sale of housing. A detailed report is then written and collected. Volunteers are generally asked to perform tests at specific locations and dates that vary according to project needs, however there is some flexibility. Volunteers must complete one 2-hour training session. Depending on funding, BNI provides a stipend for reports that are completed according to our guidelines. Baltimore Regional Transportation Board / Baltimore Metropolitan Council
This organization of the Baltimore region’s elected executives, representing Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties identifies regional interests, such as air and water quality programs, emergency preparedness, transportation planning, data systems, and more. The organization collaborates on strategies, plans, and programs to improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the Baltimore region. Volunteers are being sought to serve on the Citizens Advisory Committee and Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Group; also needed are interested individuals to review and respond to public comment opportunities. Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G) Project
Thousands of books gather dust in storage rooms and attics, while thousands of students and adults in developing countries lack both textbooks and recreational reading. Volunteers drop off good used books and/or help sort 8:00 am–12:00 noon on the second and fourth Saturdays each month (volunteers should call to verify) at the B.I.G. warehouse at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis. Individuals of high school age and older are welcome to help on a “drop-in” basis. Select volunteers are welcomed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to sort and shelve books for future Book Sales. The Colonial Players
The Mission of the organization is to provide facilities, education, training, and encouragement to all members of the community who are interested in participating in the dramatic arts and further to educate the community to the appreciation of the dramatic arts by providing a variety of dramatic entertainment. Colonial Players of Annapolis has volunteer opportunities for a variety of interests. Box office, ushering , set painting and construction, stage crew, costumes, handling properties, helping with lights and sound, Stage Managing, arranging parties and other social events, promoting shows and the theater, and much more. Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS)
CoCoRaHS is a non-profit community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds throughout the U.S and Canada that works together to measure and map precipitation using inexpensive measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive web site. Data is provided for natural resource, education, and research applications. Volunteers of all ages are needed (those under 18 need a guardian) to collect and report data about precipitation with measurement tools at their homes which is reported daily to an interactive web site. Maryland Environmental Trust (MET)
MET has recently “Adopted-A-Highway” along Solomon Island Road (MD 2) in southern Anne Arundel County (near Holy Hill and several other MET easement properties). This community activity is open to anyone interested in helping to keep a one mile stretch of Solomon Island Road litter free. MET will provide training, gloves, vest and bags. Our first clean-up is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18th at 10am. It will take approximately 1 hour to clean our stretch of highway (with 10 volunteers). Participants should park at the Tracy’s Landing Park & Ride; located on Solomon Island Road near West Bay Front Road, Park And Ride Anne Arundel – MD 2 @ MD 258 (Bay Front Rd).If you are interested in volunteering for this MET “Adopt a Highway” activity, please contact Wendy Stringfellow at wstringfellow@dnr.state.md.us or 410-514-7901. Volunteers will need to watch a five minute DVD and sign a release prior to the cleanup.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Maryland)
The mission of MADD is to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available on victim impact panels, victim services, as a trained facilitator with the “Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence” Program. MADD is also holding its 7th Annual Cookies for Cops event this Holiday season. By donating cookies, to be hand-delivered by MADD Maryland volunteers and staff, you will be partnering with MADD Maryland to show your support of your local law enforcement agencies with the good will of the holiday season. Providence Center
Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults. Volunteer with Providence Center and help make a difference in the lives of those served by the Center. Volunteers are a tremendous asset to our programs. You may have gardening skills to help in our greenhouses, an artistic flair to assist in our Art Institute, an entrepreneurial spirit that can help a participant start his own business, or just the desire to be a friend to someone, spending time over lunch, working on the computer or reading. Volunteers must be at least 16 and must go through a background check. We are happy to work with eligible students fulfilling community service requirements but ask that they volunteer a minimum of 40 hours.
