Anne Arundel-Annapolis CERT
Volunteer to become a trained member of your community in emergency response. The Anne Arundel-Annapolis Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has announced its fall dates for Basic CERT training. Starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 1, 2016, this 20-hour course provides you the basic skills necessary to respond to your community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster, when emergency services are not immediately available. Learn about disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operation, light search and rescue, CERT organization, disaster psychology, and terrorism and CERT. The training concludes with a review and a disaster simulation to validate your training. The course is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings at the Fire Training Academy in Millersville. Don’t want to take the training but still want to help? Volunteer as a victim (complete with moulage – simulated injuries) at the disaster simulation on Oct. 1st. For more information and to register, go to www.aaacert.org. Anne Arundel County Literacy Council
Tutor training sessions are being offered from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, Sat., Sept. 17 AND Sat., Oct. 1, 2016 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park and will include both Basic Literacy and English Language Learner instruction. We have a class size limit of 35. Enrollees MUST preregister and attend both sessions. You can change a life through literacy. Volunteer tutors and assessors are needed for combating adult and out-of-school youth illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers. Cool Kids Campaign, Cool Kids Camp, Sept. 9-11, 2016
We are recruiting volunteer staff for the weekend of the first annual Cool Kids Camp being held in September 2016 at Camp Puh’Tok in Monkton, MD. Staff members must be at least 18 years old and must be able to stay the entire weekend from Friday, Sept 9 at 1:00 p.m. to Sunday Sept 11, 2016th at 1:00 p.m. Staff members must also pass a background check and a drug test. The purpose of the Camp is to allow kids with cancer and their siblings a chance to get away from their daily routines and reconnect with each other and with other patients and siblings. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts
Maryland Hall is holding orientation sessions from 6:00 – 7:30pm Tues., August 23, OR 6:00 – 7:30pm, Thurs., August 25, 2016, (attend only one session) in Room 205 for prospective volunteers who will usher at Maryland Hall performances or assist at special events. Ushering requires some standing and walking, excellent customer service, and attendance at an additional training session soon after the orientation training. Special events volunteers will help a variety of tasks including set up prior to and close up at the end of the fall Arts Alive Gala and spring Art Auction. OHLA (Organization of Hispanics/Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County)
OHLA provides support, education and relief services to immigrant Hispanic-American families. Volunteers serve as Outreach Coordinators bridging existing gaps in areas such as health, jobs and other services needed by the community. Bi-lingual volunteers staff the Annapolis office located in the Community Resource Center at 80 West St., and assist Hispanic constituents with many issues ranging from immigration to interpreter services, training provided. Ombudsman Program (Anne Arundel County Dept. of Aging & Disabilities)
Ombudsman Program (Resident Advocate): A free, confidential service that advocates for residents’ rights and good-quality long-term care. Receives and resolves complaints made by or for residents of nursing homes and assisted living homes. Educates the public on long-term care facilities and services. Promotes opportunities for volunteers. The Ombudsman Program needs compassionate individuals to visit nursing homes and assisted living homes and advocate for residents. Each interested individual will be interviewed to discuss the position and the individual’s background. If the program is a good match for the volunteer, then that volunteer will be provided with training and supervision. Spa Creek Conservancy
Volunteers are needed on Wed., August 3, 2016 to help remove invasive and non-native plant species from the Spa Creek area around the Chesapeake Children’s Museum. Special Olympics, Anne Arundel
We are recruiting for a new volunteer position on our management team, grant writer. Applicants should be willing to spend an hour or two each week, identifying potential grant sources, researching the requirements, writing grant requests, serving as the point of contact for Special Olympics Anne Arundel County, and reporting back to the management team at our monthly meetings.
