Anne Arundel County Literacy Council
Volunteer tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers. 9:00 AM– 4:00 PM, Sat., October 11, 2014 AND Sat., Oct. 18, 2014, Tutor Training:The tutor training sessions will be held at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park and will cover both basic literacy and ELL (English Language Learner) instruction. Registrants must attend both sessions. There is a class size limit of 35, and our March training filled up quickly. Historic London Town and Gardens
This Edgewater historic site seeks persons interested in history and/or horticulture to become docents, historic interpreters and gardeners at this 17th-18th century tobacco port. Volunteers give site tours, house tours or demonstrate colonial crafts and daily life. They may work in historic or ornamental gardens. 10:00 AM–4:30 PM, Sat., October 11, 2014, Hearth Cooking & Family Program Tradespeople of London Town: Watch re-enactors cook over an open fire making colonial-style foods in the Lord Mayor’s Tenement. This will be the official grand opening of the new carpenter shop; learn how some of the buildings in London Town were built. For more information see the website.
10:00 am–4:00 pm Saturday, Nov.1 & Noon to 4:00 pm Sun., Nov. 2, 2014, Militia Muster: Join the residents of Anne Arundel County as they partake in the annual militia muster. The re-enactors will have clothing and equipment reflective of the period. Learn about colonial weapons and life and maybe practice some drilling, too. See the website for details.
Patapsco Heritage Greenway
The Patapsco Heritage Greenway Inc. (PHG) is dedicated to preserving, protecting, interpreting and restoring the environment, history and culture of the Patapsco River Valley between Daniels and Elk. Lifeline 100 Century Ride & Community Health Fair at Kinder Farm Park, Sun., October 19, 2014
Bicycle Advocates for Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (BikeAAA) in partnership with Anne Arundel County Police and Recreation & Parks Dept. is hosting the Lifeline100 with 100, 56, 15 (trail only) mile rides and a free children’s bike rodeo and family fun ride. Bike routes will wind throughout scenic Anne Arundel County including downtown Annapolis, the Severn River, southern Anne Arundel County, BWI/Marshall airport and the B&A Trail. There will also be a free, all-day, “Make Health Happen” community health fair by the Healthy Anne Arundel Coalition that day, all at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville; the fair will offer health screenings, fun activities for kids, families and more. Volunteers, sponsors, and participants are being sought for this event. Volunteers are needed to help with parking, registration, rest stops, SAG support, at the Health Fair, children’s rodeo, and more. Rebuilding Together Anne Arundel County (Throughout County)
This volunteer, non-profit organization repairs and revitalizes homes and neighborhoods of low income families in Anne Arundel County, to include elderly, disabled, and veterans, so they may live in warmth, safety and independence. Skilled Volunteers are needed, to include plumbers, electricians, roofers, tillers, dry wall, carpet, floor installers, painters, and general workers. Also needed are volunteers to assist with fund raising, serving on the activities committees for the Board of Directors. Teams are being recruited now to sponsor home modification projects throughout the year. In-Kind Donations of building materials and/or skilled labor and Sponsorships for House Renovation Projects are most urgently needed. Spotlight on the Military, Sept. 30, 2014
Thousands of veterans, service members and their families live in Anne Arundel and Howard Counties, and many are looking for ways to use their unique skills to serve their communities as volunteers. The Volunteer Centers for Anne Arundel and Howard Counties and the Army Volunteer Corps will hold their first “Spotlight on the Military and their Families Volunteer Speed-Meet” event at Fort Meade on Tuesday, September 30th at Potomac Place Community Center from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A light lunch will be provided to those who register. The goal is to provide more opportunities for service members, both active duty and retired, and their families to meet representatives from organizations that engage veterans, service members and families as volunteers in Anne Arundel and Howard Counties and the region. SPAN (Serving People Across Neighborhoods)
SPAN in cooperation with area churches help persons in their community in need of crisis assistance because of evictions, utility turn-off notices, emergency medical or prescription needs, food pantry or other services. Span needs volunteers to staff the office, work in the food pantry Monday and Wednesday mornings and donate food and other items for the pantry. Get your group to sponsor a food drive or pick up a few extra items when you shop and drop them off at SPAN Mon – Thurs, 10 am – 2 pm.
