AARP Drive to End Hunger, March 1-9, 2014

From March 1-9, 2014, volunteers from AARP and Girl Scouts of Central Maryland will staff tables at select Safeway stores in their own communities around the state and encourage shoppers to purchase pre-stuffed bags of nutritious food for $10 (a $12 value). These bags of food will go to the local food banks and will be directly distributed to the recipient. Every day, nearly 9 million Americans 50+ face the risk of hunger and are forced to skip meals or buy poor quality food. For more information contact Jen Holz at jholz@aarp.org. American Red Cross Blood Drives

There is a desperate need for blood donors in the Annapolis Area and at the Glen Burnie Donor Center. There is also a pressing need for volunteers to help with greeting donors, providing customer service, and serving refreshments. Blood drives are situated throughout Anne Arundel County as well as at the Glen Burnie Center. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older, complete an application, and attend an orientation session. The Arc Central Chesapeake Region

The Arc advocates for and supports County citizens with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed to serve on the board of directors, help with fund raising, assist in the office, and to help with special events. Volunteers, 16 years and older, are also needed as gardening assistants at the Arc’s sensory garden in Annapolis, including plant care, patio maintenance, planting trees/shrubs, etc. and to help with leaf and yard maintenance at 30 homes the Arc manages throughout the County.  Contact Angie DeMorland at (410) 268-8085 or (410) 269-1883, or e-mail: ADemoreland@thearcccr.org. Anne Arundel County Schools May 3, 2014, Wiley Bates PTA Arts in Motion 5K Race

Volunteers are being sought to assist with this fundraiser which will help the PTA provide needed services and programs for students at Wiley Bates Middle School, 701 Chase St., Annapolis, MD 21401. Volunteers are needed to help set up the 5k course and be a race monitor on the course, work at the food table, and help at our registration table between the hours of 7:00­–10 AM on Sat. Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy

The Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy is offering free trees and shrubs to Anne Arundel County residents as part of the DNR Backyard Buffers program. Guiding Eyes for the Blind

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is dedicated to enriching the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely, thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and new horizons of opportunity. This nonprofit organization serves the Bay Region by raising puppies as potential future guide dogs. Volunteer puppy raisers are needed to provide the love, support and direction these puppies need to prepare them for formal training. Volunteer raisers (as young as 13 with parental supervision) take puppies into their homes for fourteen to eighteen months and teach them manners and social skills. In addition to daily work and play with their dogs, raisers attend local classes and puppy evaluations.  Website: http://www.guidingeyes.org.  Puppy training classes are 7:00 pm on 2nd and 4th Thursday nights in Bowie. Historic London Town and Gardens

This Edgewater historic site seeks persons interested in history and/or horticulture to become docents, historic interpreters and gardeners at this 17th-18th century tobacco port. Volunteers give site tours, house tours or demonstrate colonial crafts and daily life. They may work in historic or ornamental gardens. 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Jun. 23-27 & Jul. 7-11, 2014, Colonial Adventures Summer Camps: Colonial Adventures offers children who have completed 1st-6th grades the opportunity to spend part of their summer experiencing colonial life in a hands-on, experience-based environment. Children will live the colonial life dressing in period clothing, hearth cooking their own lunch, learning colonial crafts (including making leather journals, writing with quill pens and more), and playing colonial games and throwing tomahawks. They will even become a pirate for a day. Metro Maryland Youth for Christ

The Youth for Christ Campus Life ministry combines healthy relationships with creative programs to help senior high young people make good choices, establish a solid foundation for life, and positively impact their schools. Like every ministry of YFC, Campus Life seeks to engage these young people wherever they are found. Volunteers are needed in the Anne Arundel County area to help with weekly Campus Life Club meetings Monday in Linthicum, Tuesday in Millersville, and Wednesday in Annapolis.
