According to a 2013 recent study, Michigan ranked 18th in the nation for number of fatal drug overdoses. As the use of heroin rises, the statistics are expected to be worse this year.

DETROIT (October 27, 2014) – In 2013, a report called “Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic” ranked each state in the country by their drug overdose mortality rates. Michigan came in as the 18th highest, with 13.9 fatal overdoses per 100,000 people.

It found that the majority of overdose deaths were due to prescription drugs. The rate of prescription drug use in Michigan tripled since 1999. Nationally, rates of prescription drug deaths have doubled in the majority of states, making Michigan one of the few with accelerated overdose fatality growth.

However, a troubling trend that had been on the decline a decade ago years is starting creep back onto the radar as Michigan is seeing a sharp rise in heroin. Many drug addicts turn to heroin as a less expensive alternative to a prescription pain killer addiction. With the recent crackdown on “pill mills” and stricter regulations around doctors prescribing opiate pain killers, the demand often exceeds availability, which has been driving up costs of pills on the street. With prices averaging one dollar per milligram, and long-time addicts needing upwards of 80 milligrams per day, the lower cost and easy access to heroin has led to an increased use of the drug as of late.

In Michigan alone, heroin deaths quadrupled between 1999 and 2012, with the highest increase over the past 5 years.

Luckily, Michigan lawmakers are working hard to provide better access to treatment for drug addiction. Michigan is also home to one of the leading rapid detox centers in the United States – and the only one founded and staffed by Board Certified physicians and anesthesiologists. MDS Drug Detox in the Detroit suburb of Southfield has helped thousands of opiate addicts overcome their physical addiction without the nightmarish side effects of withdrawal. As the patient is kept in a sedated state for up to 48 hours while the drug is being flushed out of the system, the patient is awakened after the physical effects of detoxification have passed, resulting in a virtually painless detox.

RAPID DRUG DETOX NOW AVAILABLE

While facilities like MDS Drug Detox are helping addicts recover before they find themselves in a life-or-death overdose situation, Michigan House and Senate are working to provide better access to anti-overdose drugs that can save lives if an overdose is imminent. With the drug addiction epidemic taking center stage in the state’s government, they are hoping to reverse the statistics of drug addiction and overdose in Michigan and help those in need before it is too late.
