Animal skier James Webb is doing something different this summer. Instead of hitting the glaciers for some snow filled action, he opted for a totally different type of adventure. Most likely inspired by team mate and good friend Alan Stokes, Webbo decided to embark on a tropical journey through sunny Indonesia and try himself the firing Bali surf.
In this three-part story, Webbo will be taking us through his anticipation and preparation heading into the trip, picking out his personal highlights whilst away, and coming back with a realm of top tips for anyone looking to explore the South East Asian island.
With winter firmly behind me, and no plans to head to the glaciers this summer, I’ve decided to do something a little different and venture to South East Asia. I will be spending just over three weeks exploring the beautiful island of Bali with my girlfriend Kirsty.
I have never been on a trip like this before and one of the things I am most excited about is being able to pack light; instead of the usual three bags I travel with (backpack, holdall and a HUGE ski bag, all meticulously filled to the airline’s weight allowance), it feels great to be leaving home with only a small travel backpack!
Preparations for this trip have also been a little out of the ordinary for me. I’ve had to have a number of vaccinations (Typhoid, Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Rabies), which has never been an issue for the likes of the Swiss/French Alps or North America!
I am now the proud owner of an International Driving Permit to allow me to take on some scooter adventures (something else new… I have never driven a motorised vehicle with less than 4 wheels), and a sim card that will let me post annoying holiday photos to my friends and family back home whenever I want. #britsontour
One of the pics he was able to share shortly after landing. We could get used to this.
There are a few things I’ll be taking which crossover with my usual ski packing; namely my action camera. However this trip it will be used to record surfing fails, SUP selfies and sunsets, rather than the standard ski edit it is so accustomed to.
I’ll also be taking my trusty Animal Vilano bush hat – as at home on the beach as it is on the slopes (if you’re into the fisherman look! I certainly am).
He’s talking about this amazing bucket hat.
I can’t wait to embrace this totally alien adventure, fingers crossed I don’t put my new Animal rash vest to shame. I fear I’ll be very “all the gear no idea”, as I try to get to grips with a surfboard!
At least there will be the reassuring familiarity on arrival in the form of Josh Birch (ski cinematographer), and Billy Morgan (pro snowboarder & quad-cork extraordinaire) with a cold drink.
