Using Twitter to search for jobs is a good option for people in many professions. Social media is growing at a rate of knots and isn’t to be ignored. Whilst Linkedin is the obvious choice of social media platform to use to search for jobs, Twitter can can be an effective tool too if you use it correctly and set up your Twitter profile properly.
5 Top Tips for using Twitter to Search for Jobs.
1) Professional Profile
Complete your profile bio with a strong description of you, your job title and interests. Upload a professional-looking headshot photograph and make sure you complete your locations details too so you’re more easily searchable.
If you don’t have a website, use the URL section of the profile to link to your Linkedin profile. That way, recruiters and companies can easily find out more about your skills and experience just by clicking the link. It’s a good idea to secure a Linkedin vanity URL and ensure your Linkedin profile is complete before you link to it. First impressions count and you need to make sure all social media platforms reflect you in a positive light.
You can also upload a header. This is a good place to advertise your skills and experience. If you’re not a competent Photoshop user, don’t worry. Head over to Canva, it’s a brilliant free design website that will enable you to create a personalised Twitter header. There is a ready-made Twitter header template available to use. Alternatively, the Twitter header size is 1500 x 500 (2016).
2) Connect with Industry Leaders and Organisations
Today, most large organisations and many smaller ones too are on Twitter, so are most industry peers. It’s a good idea to Google them and obtain their Twitter username. Once you have their Twitter usernames, follow them, read their Tweets and engage with them so you can start building a relationship.
You can also search out other industry leaders, publications and professional bodies and follow their Twitter profiles too. It’s important to be social and engage with these people and others in your network. Build yourself a strong online reputation and keep up-to-date with industry changes; initiate conversations, respond to Tweets and ReTweet (RT) their interesting posts.
3) Share Valuable Content
Demonstrate your industry knowledge by sending out insightful and informative Tweets. You can create artwork using Canva to publish quotes, key facts, top tips, etc. Create and share your own valuable content but don’t forget to share others’ content too. If you share their Tweets, they may return the favour and your network will grow larger and stronger.
Not all your content needs to be work-related, you also need to put the social in to social networking so don’t forget to share some personal Tweets. Demonstrate your personality, share details of your hobbies, what you’re doing, watching or reading, what you like and dislike, other news, etc.
I was taught to apply the ‘1/3rd rule’ when it comes to using Twitter to search for jobs or for self-promotion/business purposes. It’s made up of:

1/3 Self-promoting Tweets
1/3 Re-Tweets
4) Use Hashtags #
Hashtags are great tool for getting noticed. By including a relevant hashtag on your posts makes your Tweet more easily searchable in Twitter search.
The inclusion of a hashtag or two (that’s more than enough) helps to categorise your Tweets. All you need to do is use the # symbol before your keyword or phrase, without spaces. For example, #job #work #sales #accountant
When you or anyone else clicks on a hashtag in Twitter, it will show up other Tweets that use the same hashtag.
5) Follow Job Boards
There are lots and lots of job boards to choose from if you decide to try using Twitter to search for jobs. I began putting together list of the job boards on Twitter for you but I soon discovered there are just so many!
