As the newer players like Yahoo News Digest and SmartNews attempt to capture the news app market, Flipboard has released the version 3.0 of its Android app in Google Play. The new version brings a redesigned look, over 30,000 news topics to follow and “The Daily Edition” news digest.
“We’re on a quest to create the world’s best personal magazine, and today’s update—the third generation of Flipboard—builds on our core tenets. The new Flipboard is both more personal and magazine-like,” wrote the Flipboard team in a blog post.
Starting with The Daily Edition, which is a brand new addition to Flipboard and a direct competitor to Yahoo’s News Digest. Daily Edition is a curated list of must-read news items across categories like business, politics, tech, sports and culture. Unlike its competitors, The Daily Edition will be available in not just US edition but also in local editions such as India, Latin America, UK, Brazil and US Latino. A fresh new Daily Edition will become available on Flipboard at 7AM local time each day.
Coming to the news topics, Flipboard is adding over 30,000 topics across categories that you can follow for the latest news regarding them. These news topics can be searched or added via the news tags available in news items. According to the Flipboard team, news topics are powered by Zite’s technology, which was acquired by Flipboard in March this year, as well as news magazines created by the app users.
Lastly, the app now sports a brand new design, which is more magazine like.
“We’re rolling out an all-new design for the phone, where Flipboard has been re-imagined to be more magazine-like and elegant. Open Flipboard, and you’ll be immediately immersed in a highly-visual and up-to-the-minute stream of articles, photos and more based on your areas of interest. There are airy full-screen covers, fresh typography and a new navigational bar that lets you quickly access your home feed, your tiles, search, notifications and your profile,” noted Flipboard team in the blog post.
There are some smaller changes as well as like a new look for the profiles or the new My Analytics section to track your curated magazines as well as new My Magazine-series.
