Pedigree and Ford Lineage is the Allure to this Stallion

The AMP Performance Mustang run by Bott Motorsports is known by most true Ford Racing enthusiasts. Its racing history is record setting and has to its credit many firsts within the world of heads up drag racing. The car is widely known to many as the AMP car, but another story is what this Mustang represents to the history of naturally aspirated heads up drag racing. The cutting edge technology built into this car, what is it has achieved in its history and the story of who operated it from 2005 thru 2012 makes it a prize to any real Ford and or Mustang collector.

Before retiring the car in 2013, the AMP car competed in numerous heads up drag racing events all over the US with its most recent achievement winning the very first NHRA Wally awarded in the newly formed NA10.5 class held in NMCA Muscle Car Series. With this car the team also won the very first Wally in the NMRA Hot Street class in 2011. In 2008 it was the only competitor in PSCA to clinch a Championship two thirds into the season within the Edelbrock Hot Street Series by crushing the competition winning 5 of the first 6 race wins in a row. The team beat out some of the quickest competitors in the country (some of those of those competitors were defending champions and NHRA record holders). The team is most proud by eliminating all of the competing brands including some of the quickest big block Chevy’s in the country. In 2007 the AMP team car won the PSCA World Finals with the most consistent ET record and round win in history. In 2005 the AMP/Bott team car started its rookie season and competed nationally in the Ford Motor Company Sponsored Fun Ford Series running in the highly competitive heads up Street Bandit class finishing the season with a runner-up in the Championship. In the second season of 2006 the car successfully went to every final round elimination winning 3 of the 9 race series nearly clinching its first championship. Much of the performance comes from the Kuntz built 1000 hp small block Ford engine which allows the capability of running in the low 8’s to even the high 7 second quarter mile at speeds in the high 160’s to 170 mph all without any power adders.

As many motorsports enthusiast know, winning consistently in heads up drag racing is not easy at any measure; it takes money and talent to compete at a championship level. The Bott Motorsports team has the experience and brought together resources to create this highly competitive history setting effort. The father and son team of Bott Motorsports is not new to the world of drag racing. Dan Sr. comes from a Ford family, was associate editor of Popular Hot Rodding Magazine while in college and during the late 70’s Dan ran in NHRA Stock class with his factory/dealer sponsored SCJ Cyclone. In 1970-71 Dan Sr. competed in NHRA Modified Production class with a factory and dealer sponsored Mercury Comet running a Boss 302 and in 1972-74 built and competed in the new NHRA Pro Stock class with a Pinto identical to Glidden/Nicholson’s Pro Stock cars. 1975 Dan Sr. retired racing to move onto his business career but 30 years later when his son graduated from college he decided to take car of some unfinished business and build this one of a kind car to again go heads up racing and duke it out with the best. http://www.bottmotorsports.com/MuscleMustangsStory.html

Preferring heads up racing over bracket or index racing the Bott team wanted to compete in what has evolved into one of the most competitive quarter mile classes; NA 10.5 heads up drag racing is known by many as the sportsman or gentleman’s version of NHRA professional Pro Stock racing. The AMP/Bott Motorsports Mustang has the best of everything, chassis originally built by well known NHRA shop of Tom Yancer Race Cars and in 2009 totally updated and lightened up by known Pro Stock guru chassis builder Darryl Smith. The light weight 2500 lb car has a steel body with a removable carbon fiber front end, all Lexan windows with a full Pro Stock style cage. The rear end is custom built with Mark Williams and Moser components and Lamb brakes in the rear with custom adjustable shocks. Nearly all bearings are ceramic to reduce rolling resistance. The front K-member is custom designed with Koni adjustable shocks and ceramic bearings. The wheels are light weight Mickey Thompson with stiff sidewall Mickey Thompson matched true 10.5 slicks. The trans is a Rossler Turbo 400 built to withstand over 2500 hp and is one of the lightest versions offered by anyone in the industry. The converter is an ultra light weight Neal Chance custom full billet aluminum 8” converter that can be split open for easy internal changes to the stator.

The removable front end provides easy access to engine area, every detail allows for easy access and race day maintenance allowing for a quick turnaround. An $8,000 Racepak data acquisition system tracking everything from pressures, water/oil temps to all eight cylinder EGT’s to crankcase vacuum to engine and driveshaft revs with downloadable readouts and full digital dash display at the dash and another in the engine compartment. The MSD full digital electronic ignition is programmable to each cylinder with curves designed on a laptop and downloadable. Custom made ISP seat and harness found only in your most professionally built race cars with a full on-board fire system.

Up front is the real business department, a third generation dyno documented 1,000 hp 440 cubic inch Ford Small Block engine with Edelbrock Victor II Heads flowing in excess of 440 CFM, an Edelbrock GVII intake massaged by Wilson Manifolds. The inside of the engine is like a jeweler’s watch, knife edged counterbalance weights, ultra light weight GRP rods and 18 to1 compression JE pistons. The 118 Octane VP fueled 9,000 plus revving engine with nearly 1 inch valve lift has one of the most advanced valve train systems allowing for incredible reliability and lower than usual maintenance. The external oil pump and custom designed oil pan with pre-heated oiling system also provides low parasitic drag. The Dart block is made of graphite filled material for hi-strength. The custom cooling system is identical to any Pro Stock car.

The AMP/Bott Motorsports car has earned the reputation as being one of the quickest naturally aspirated Fords in the country running on a true10.5 tire. Most impressive it is quicker than most any power adder car running on a 10.5 tire today and is known as one of the quickest and fastest naturally aspirated quarter mile drag cars in the country. The AMP/Bott Motorsports car quickly became the poster car for many manufacture advertising and a test bed for much of the cutting edge technology with companies like Edelbrock heads and manifolds, Braswell carburetors and more. It has been featured on the cover of number publications, featured in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, featured in 5.0 Ford, in center spreads, billboards, banner ads, television features/advertising and numerous U-Tube videos.
