I am having a blast in Baton Rouge. It is much quieter than New Orleans, but it still has plenty of Louisiana character to share. I’ve started off my Baton Rouge adventures near the Southern portion of the city, but for the stage of the journey I want to experience what downtown Baton Rouge has to offer me. There are a few hotel options available, but the one that jumps out to me as the right fit is the Hotel Indigo. Right in the centre of town, a short 2-minute walk to Friday nights Live After Five concert series, and best of all a boutique Baton Rouge Hotel with all the perks of being a part of the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG). Plus they even have a hotel puppy who welcomes every guest. How can I say no to that?

The location is perfect. Located at 200 Convention Street, the entire downtown core of Baton Rouge is reachable within a five-minute walk from the front door of Hotel Indigo. As you can see from the map below Hotel Indigo is just one short block away from the Mississippi River. I encourage you to head down and see how they have turned the Levee into a public walkway, reminiscent of Vancouver’s Seawall around Stanley Park.

I arrived at the Hotel Indigo just in time to catch the last few minutes of Happy Hour from their lobby restaurant The King Bar & Bistro. Why is that a good thing? Because beer is just $2. With the heat and humidity I’m experiencing in Louisiana I just keep remembering what my Mom said to me as a kid, “remember to drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated”.  Beer is a fluid right? I grab a beer from the bar and then I proceed to check in. Remember in Louisiana you can walk on the streets with a beer as long as it is in a plastic cup.

Check-in is painless and then it is up to my room on the 7th floor. The first thing I notice and appreciate when I open the door to my room are the floors are hardwood and not carpeted. This is the first hotel I’ve stayed at where the room doesn’t have carpeting. I like it. The room itself isn’t overly large, but it has everything I need and it is decorated very nicely with a modern aesthetic. The large wall mural over the bed is a very nice touch.

I’m a big fan of the built in wall unit which has a closet, flat screen TV and a workstation for me all built into one slick and clean design. I should have no trouble writing a few stories from this desk every morning. The coffee station is also very convenient, I won’t have to leave the desk if I need a second cup in the morning.

The bathroom is also very nice and features my favourite, a shower stall and not a bathtub. I know some people like a bath, but not me I prefer a long hot shower in the morning to get me started.

If you doubted me that the Hotel is as close to the Mississippi as I said just check out the view from my window. That is the Mississippi River.

The best part of the Hotel Indigo though is its location. Downtown Baton Rouge has a fun restaurant and bar scene and they are all just steps away from the hotel. A nice place to call home for a few days when you visit Baton Rouge.
