Cook Islands

Practice Manager, Veterinarians, vet nurses and vet students to volunteer in the beautiful Cook Islands.

The Esther Honey Foundation, named one of the world’s "100 best volunteer vacations to enrich your life" in National Geographic’s 100 Best Vacations series, provides the only veterinary care and clinic in the whole of the Cook Islands, a tropical paradise with lovely friendly people and an easy relaxed way of life.

Established in 1995, EHF has become a trusted member of the community while treating more than 34,000 patients. Our all-volunteer teams have spayed/neutered more than 13,000 animals, reduced the number of Rarotonga dogs from 6,000 to 1,666 and sterilized more than 70% of the remaining population. Most importantly, we have achieved this goal without killing healthy animals and by providing equitable care to all animals, owned and stray, in exchange for donations only.

Practice Manager needed (vet nursing experience helpful) to work closely with the foundation's US board and president in managing the Foundation's Animal Clinic operations and community programs. A modest stipend is provided in addition to shared housing and transportation.

Experienced volunteer veterinarians (three years minimum with surgical experience including spay and neuter) are needed at the Esther Honey Foundation Animal Clinic on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands throughout 2013. Responsibilities include supervising vet students and new graduates.

Less experienced veterinarian, nurse and vet student positions are also available throughout 2013.

Modest dorm-style housing, visa, local transfers and clinic business related costs are covered by the foundation; all other expenditures are the responsibility of the volunteer. CV and 2 professional references required.

India

Vets Beyond Borders
Take a working holiday in Ladakh, in the spectacular Himalayas of India and join our dedicated team working on the Ladakh Street Dog Sterilisation Programme. Vets from Australia, NZ, Europe and India help locals to catch, de-sex and rabies vaccinate street dogs from the township of Leh and surrounding villages. The project is a local initiative which began in 2006 and now has plenty of hometown support. It is largely funded by the Bridgette Bardot Foundation and is staffed by keen volunteers through Vets Beyond Borders.

Volunteer vets need to have at least 2 years clinical experience and be competent in canine surgery.

You need to be able to work well in a team, have a good sense of humour and be tolerant and respectful of different cultures.

The project runs from June 1st till September 30th. We suggest that volunteers work at least 3 weeks, in order to acclimatise and also make the trip worthwhile.

Thailand

Baan Unrak Thai Animal Sanctuary
An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Vet to volunteer their skills in a remote community in Thailand. Sangkhlaburi lies within the Kanchanburi province, approximately eight hours from Bangkok. Situated on the Myanmar border this picturesque town is surrounded by stunning mountains, national parks, waterfalls and rivers. With a Thai, Burmese, Karen, Mon and Laos population the rich cultural diversity is what makes this town unique.

Established in 2006, Baan Unrak Thai Animal Sanctuary is a small sanctuary in Sangkhlaburi. The sanctuary is currently home to 30 resident dogs. The nearest veterinary clinic is located over three hours away, so the local animals rely on the sanctuary to assist them in times of need. We see all manner of ailments – from regular fleas & ticks, to scabies, distemper, parvo, and human inflicted injuries. We also run regular sterilisation and vaccination projects to humanely manage the stray animal population, and improve the health and wellbeing of animals and humans in the area.

An experienced vet, you will work with a small passionate team of volunteers (including a Sanctuary Manager) to improve the health and wellbeing of all animals in Sangkhlaburi.
