Not only has Kesha written new music, but it seems that she’s taken her pop sound in a country direction. That is, of course, if she ever gets to release what she’s been working on, because her ongoing legal battle with Dr. Luke continues to interfere with her next album.

The singer sat down with The New York Times in an interview published today (Oct. 26) and shared that she’s written 22 new songs. That’s a big number considering Kesha hasn’t released a full album since her 2012 effort Warrior. But even though she submitted those songs to Sony, she claimed she has received no feedback and to this day tours small clubs to make some kind of money in order to support her massive legal fees, which The New York Times estimated to be over $100,000 a month.
If Kesha’s music ever reaches the public’s ears, she hopes it shifts their perception of her from the hard partying girl on “TiK ToK” to someone more balanced. Explaining how the label wanted to portray her as the fun girl on her first album, she said there were other facets to her personality she wasn’t allowed to reveal through her music. “To this day, I’ve never released a single that’s a true ballad, and I feel like those are the songs that balance out the perception of you, because you can be a fun girl,” she said. “You can go and have a crazy night out, but you also, as a human being, have vulnerable emotions. You have love.”
Of the 22 songs, there are “Hunt You Down,” which is a country song replete with banjo, as well as “Learn to Let It Go,” “Rainbow” and “Rosé,” about an old boyfriend who has moved on and married. The songs sound as though Kesha has bridged who the public came to know her as and who she really is, but if they ever see the light of day remains a looming question mark over her ongoing battle to once again be heard.
