The President of India is the first citizen of India and the head of state. The President of India is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces that includes Indian Army, Air Force, Navy and other units. This power is however ceremonial as the decisions are taken by Prime Minister and his cabinet. President is known as Rashtrapati in Hindi, a Sanskrit neologism meaning “lord of the realm”. He used to stay in Rastrapati Bhawan. The President of India is elected by elected members of the parliament houses, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and Vidhan Sabha, the state legislative assemblies.

There have been total of 13 presidents of India since the introduction of the post in and declaration of first president of India in 1950. Here is the list of all Prime Ministers of India from 1947 to till date. The post was formed when the constitution was adopted. Apart from these thirteen presidents, three acting (temporary) presidents have also been in office for small period of time. V V Giri became Acting President of India in 1969 after the death of Zakir Hussain, who died during the office. VV Giri was elected President a few months later. The President of India has a tenure of 5 years. The vice president of India handles office in absence of the president. Who was the first Prime Minister of India? Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India, is the only president to have held office for two consecutive terms.
Seven of the all presidents of India were the members of a political party before being elected as the president. 6 were the members of the Indian National Congress. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, was a member of Janta Party who became president. Two presidents, Zakir Hussain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, died in president’s office. V V Giri resigned to take part in the presidential elections, he was superseded by Muhammad Hidayatullah as temporary president.
The current President of India is Pranab Mukherjee who was elected on 25 July 2012. Pranab Mukherjee held various positions in the Union cabinet ministry for the Government of India such as Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister & Planning Commission Deputy Chairman. He is from West Bengal and is the first Bengali resident to become the President of India. The ex- president before Pranab Mukherjee, Pratibha Patil, was elected as the 12th President of India in 2007. She became the first woman president of India.

The 1st / First President of India:
RAJENDRA PRASAD (1884-1963) – From 26th January 1950 to 13th May 1962
Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of the Republic of India. He is one of the main Indian political leaders, lawyer.he joined the Indian National Congress at the time of Indian independence movement. He eventually became a big leader from Bihar region. He was a supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, He was active during the Salt Satyagrah was imprisoned by British government during 1931 and the Quit India movement of 1942. Rajendra Prasad served as President of the Indian National Congress from 1934 to 1935. After the elections in 1946, Prasad was given responsibility to serve the country as minister of food and agriculture in the central union government. Upon independence in 1947, Prasad was elected as the first president of the Constituent Assembly of India, who prepared the Constitution of India.

The 2nd /Second President of India:
SARVAPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN (1888-1975)- From 13th May 1962 to 13th May 1967
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan or popularly known as S. Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher. He was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.

The 3rd /Third President of India:
ZAKIR HUSSAIN (1897-1969) – From 13th May 1967 to 3rd May 1969
Zakir Husain was the 3rd President of India, he managed president’s office from 13 May 1967 until his death on 3 May 1969. An educator and intellectual, Husain was the country’s first Muslim president, and he is also the first to die in office. He was the shortest President of India who served the country. He served as Governor of Bihar previously from 1957 to 1962 & as Vice President of India from the term 1962 to 1967.
President Zakir Husain was the co-founder of Jamia Milia Islamia University, served as its Vice Chancellor from 1928. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1963.

Mr. VARAHAGIRI VENKATA GIRI or V.V.GIRI – From 3rd May 1969 to 20th July 1969
Varahagiri Venkata Giri commonly known as V. V. Giri, was the fourth President of India from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974.
As President, VV Giri assisted the office of the Indian President to the Prime Minister and came to be known as a “Rubber Stamp President”. VV Giri was succeeded by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as President in 1974. After the end of his term, VV Giri was honoured with the Bharat Ratna. Sh VV Giri died in 1980.

JUSTICE MOHAMMAD HIDAYATULLAH (1905-1992)- From 20th July 1969 to 21st August 1969
Mohammad Hidayatullah was the 11th Chief Justice of India and 6th Vice-President of India, who served from 31 August 1979 to 30 August 1984. He had also served as the Acting President of India (temporary) from 20 July 1969 to 24 August 1969 and from 6 October 1982 to 31 October 1982. He was an eminent jurist, scholar, author, educationist and linguist.

The 4th / Fourth President of India:
DR.V.V.GIRI ( 1894-1980) – From 24th August 1969 to 23rd August 1974
Varahagiri Venkata Giri or VV Giri was the 4th President of the Republic of India from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974.
Giri was succeeded by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as President in 1974. After the end of his term, Giri was honoured with the Bharat Ratna. Giri died in 1980. During the President ship, Giri subordinated the office of the President to the Prime Minister and came to be known as a “Rubber Stamp President”.

FAKRUDEEN ALI AHMED (1905-1977)- From 24th August 1974 to 11th February 1977
Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the fifth and the 2nd muslim President of India. He was in office from 1974 to 1977. He was also the President of India who died in office.

SH. BASAPPA DANAPPA JATTI ( 1913-2002)- from 11th February 1977 to 25th July 1977
B D Jatti was the fifth Vice-President of India. He served India’s President Office from 1974 to 1979. He was temporary President of India from 11 February 1977 to 25 July 1977. He was soft-spoken and Jatti rose from a humble beginning as a Municipality member to India’s second-biggest office during a five-decade-long political career.

Sh. NEELAM SANJEEVA REDDY- 1913-1993)- from 25th July 1977 to 24th July 1982
Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was the 6th President of India, serving from 1977 to 1982. He has the long political career in the Indian National Congress party during the Indian independence struggle, He has been there on the positions of various offices. He was the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, a Union Minister and he was a two-time Speaker of the Lok Sabha before becoming the youngest-ever Indian president.

GIANI ZAIL SINGH (1916-1994)- from 25th July 1982 to 24th July 1987
Giani Zail Singh was the 7th President of republic of India and served from 1982 to 1987. Before he became the president of, he was a die hard politician with the Indian National Congress, He hold several ministerial positions in the Union Cabinet Ministry including Home Ministry during his life.
When he was president he had bad experiences of Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He had an car accident and died of injuries in 1994.

R.VENKATARAMAN (1910-2009)- from 25th July 1987 to 24th July 1992
Venkataraman was an prominent Indian lawyer, Indian independence freedom fighter. He served as a politician who served as a Union minister and as the 8th President of India.
He was a lawyer and studied law and practised in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India. In his young age, he was an activist and freedom fighter of the Indian independence movement. He actively participated in the Quit India Movement. He was appointed as member of the Constituent Assembly and the cabinet. He was elected to Lok Sabha full 4 times and holds the office as Union Finance Minister and Defence Minister. In 1984, he was elected the 7th Vice-President of India and in 1987, he took the office as the 8th President of India and served from 1987 to 1992.

The 9th /Ninth President of India:
SHANKER DAYLA SHARMA (1918-1999)-from 25th July 1992 to 24th July 1997
Shankar Dayal Sharma was the 9th President of Indian republic, served from 1992 to 1997. Prior to his presidency, Sharma was the eighth Vice President of India, served under president R. Venkataraman.
He has been the Chief Minister (1952–1956) of Madhya Pradesh, and Cabinet Minister (1956–1967), holding the offices of Education, Law, Public Works, Industry and National Resources and Separate Revenue and Commerce.
He was the President of the National Congress in 1972–1974 and returned to the government of India as Union Minister for Communications from 1974 to 1977.
The International Bar Association presented Sharma with the ‘Living Legends of Law Award of Recognition’ for his outstanding contribution as lawyer internationally and for commitment to the rule of law.

The 10th /Tenth President of India:
KOCHERIL RAMAN NARAYANAN / DR.K.R.NARAYANAN – from 25th July 1997 to 24th July 2002
Kocheril Raman Narayanan or KR Narayanan was the tenth President of India. He was born in the princely state of Travancore (present day Kottayam district, Kerala), and after small career as journalist and then studying political science at the London School of Economics. Narayanan began his career as a member of the Indian Foreign Service in the Nehru administration. He served as ambassador to various countries of India and was referred as “the best diplomat of the country” by Nehru. He entered politics on the request of Indira Gandhi and won three successive general elections to the Lok Sabha. He served as a Minister of State in the Union Cabinet under former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. KR Narayanan as the 9th Vice President in 1992, Narayanan went on to become President in 1997. He was the first member of the Dalit community, to hold the post of president of India.

The 11th /Eleventh President of India:
AVUL PAKIR JAINULABUDEEN ABDUL KALAM/A.P.J.ABDUL KALAM- from 25th July 2002 to 24th July 2007
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen APJ Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He is an awesome Indian. A career scientist turned statesman, Kalam was raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
Studied physics and aerospace engineering. He experimented four decades as a scientist mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was intimately involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. He is known as the “Missile Man of India” and developed launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organizational and political role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.
APJ Abdul Kalam
APJ Abdul Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002. He won the presidential election with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the then-opposition Indian National Congress. He is known as the “People’s President.”
He returned to his civilian life of education, writing and public service after a single term. He is rewarded with many prestigious awards, including the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.
APJ collapsed while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. APJ died from an sudden cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015 at the age of 83. His funeral ceremony was held in his hometown of Rameshwaram, where he was buried with full state honors.
The 12th /Twelfth President of India:
MRS.PRATHIBA DEV SINGH PATIL -(Born on 19th December 1934- aged 81 years) – from 25th July 2007 to 24th July 2012
Pratibha Devi Singh Patil is an Indian politician. She was the first woman president of India from 2007 to 2012. She is a part of the Indian National Congress, Pratibha Patil is the first woman to hold the office as the president of India. She was the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007 before becoming the highest citizen of India.

PRANAB MUKHERJEE- from 25th July 2012 till Date
Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is the current President of India, he is the 13th president to took office since July 2012. He is in politics from last 60 years, Pranab Mukherjee is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. He headed union ministry on various positions in the Government of India. Prior to his president election as President, Mukherjee was Union Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012.
Mukherjee got into politics in 1969 with the help of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who helped him to get elected as member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, with a Congress ticket in hand. He became one of Indira Gandhi’s most trusted pal, and a permanent union minister in her cabinet by 1973.

When the controversial Internal Emergency of 1975–77, he was accused as well similarly to several other Congress leaders of committing gross excesses. He was the finance minister of India in 1982–84. Mukherjee was also Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.
