R Street Institute/Washington, DC

The R Street Institute, a national, free-market think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C., is looking for a versatile, entrepreneurial and hardworking policy analyst for its governance project.

The analyst will work under the direction of Kevin Kosar, R Street's governance project director, on topics such as budgeting, oversight, the separation of powers and the legislative process. The analyst will write for publication. He or she also will be tasked with maintaining the website LegBranch.com, providing logistical support for our Legislative Branch Capacity Working Group and conducting outreach on behalf of our governance project.

Candidates should have some hands-on experience in the legislative process as a Hill staffer, government relations professional or in a similar position. Although it isn't an absolute requirement, we expect successful candidates will have at least two years of work experience. A record of published writing is highly desirable, as is a network of contacts on Capitol Hill. The R Street Institute is an entrepreneurial environment that places a high premium on productivity. In fact, most people who join R Street were the most productive people in their former offices. If that describes you, you'll probably be a great fit for the team. (Candidates should also be really, really interested in the minutia of how Congress operates and congressional reform generally.)

While R Street doesn't impose partisan litmus tests, candidates are advised to review our website at www.rstreet.org to determine if they fit ideologically. We define ourselves as center-right, with a strong pragmatic streak, so candidates should be comfortable explaining and advocating for limited government, free-market positions.

R Street doesn't discriminate on the basis of race, sex, creed, color, sexual orientation, gender identity, era of veteran service, taste in music or anything else that's illegal, immoral or stupid to use as a basis for hiring.

Salary is commensurate with experience and prior salary history. We provide an exceptional benefits package that includes health insurance and telemedicine benefits fully paid for by the employer (even for families), a 401(k) contribution with no employee match required, a mobile phone/technology benefit, a health and wellness reimbursement for bike sharing and health club dues, free in-office snacks and a wide variety of other benefits.

To apply for this job, please send a resume in PDF or Microsoft Word format, a cover letter in the body of an email and at least one writing sample of 500 to 2,000 words in length. A published writing sample is strongly preferred.

We expect to accept resumes until Dec. 2, and will conduct interviews in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 14. These dates are subject to change. We typically schedule telephone interviews within a week of receiving resumes. If you haven't heard from us within a week and believe you are highly qualified, please do follow up and we'll give your resume another look. The email address for applications is legbranchjob@rstreet.org.
