American Oncology Institute Addresses Rising Incidence of Cancers in India

Sunday 20 July, NIZAMABAD – In conjunction with the IMA Nizambad Branch, leading physicians from American Oncology Institute (AOI) have visited the city to host local physicians for a discussion on managing a range of cancer types that impact large numbers of the Indian population. Physicians from AOI with backgrounds in radiation, medical and surgical oncology attended, reflecting AOI’s team approach to treating cancer.

American Oncology Institute offers comprehensive cancer care based on the same standards as used by top US university hospitals. “Cancer incidence is rising in India and will top one million cases in the country this year,” commented Dr. M. Babaiah, AOI’s Medical Director. He added, “AOI has assembled a multidisciplinary team with the skills, training and experience to confront cancer’s spread head on. Many of our team members have trained at top international centers. Together with our global management team and local clinical leadership, they allow AOI introduce therapies and approaches to cancer care in India that follow the highest international guidelines for care.” AOI promotes two critical themes that address the growing concern cancer represents in India.

AOI strongly advocates preventive medicine and application of age- and risk-related screening for all patients based on guidelines established by leading international medical societies. Also, AOI adheres to standards of care and treatment protocols developed by top university physicians in the United States.

Joe Nicholas, President and CEO of Cancer Treatment Services International, AOI’s parent company, remarked, “The physician leadership and management team at AOI have proven experience establishing and operating leading cancer centers in the US. When we opened AOI, we implemented the exact same policies and procedures by which our US centers abide. We apply the same standards of care for every patient we treat, the same standards of care found at top university hospitals around the world. With AOI, it is as though we have lifted a top cancer center from the US and transported it directly to India.”

At this weekend’s event, multiple physicians from AOI’s esteemed medical team accompanied Dr. Babaiah, MD. Dr. Suguna Chirla, MD, a medical oncologist who earned recognition on multiple topdoctor lists while practicing in the US, outlined current approaches to management of breast cancer, the most common cancer afflicting Indian women. Dr. Sai Yendamuri covered minimally-invasive surgical approaches to treating thoracic cancer. Dr. Sai trained at MD Anderson, commonly recognized as the top cancer hospital in the US, and practiced in New York alongside of a world leader in lung cancer treatment before returning to India to practice at AOI.

In addition to Drs. Suguna and Sai, Dr. Sashikanth Jonnalagadda discussed cutting-edge surgical management of thyroid cancer, which impacts an estimated 40 million Indians. Like Drs. Suguna and Sai, Dr. Sashikanth completed training in multiple top US cancer centers before returning to practice at AOI. And Dr. Kishore Reddy, a musculoskeletal oncologist, gave an overview of the field, which is one for which few cancer centers have an expert with his qualifications. Dr. Kishore completed international training and has performed many surgical firsts for bone cancers in Andhra Pradesh, as well as publishing widely in medical journals and presenting at national medical conferences.

Furthermore, unlike any other cancer hospital in India and as part of its commitment to patients, AOI doctors maintain incredibly close ties with oncology peers in the US. They confer with top specialists in the preparation of radiation treatment plans for every patient AOI treats. And they meet weekly to discuss complex cases in a round table discussion with a team of nationallyrecognized US oncologists.

At the program, Dr. Babaiah, MD added, “Just a few of our doctors have presented updates on the contemporary techniques they offer for treating cancers common in India. On top of establishing an

eminently-qualified medical team, AOI offers many unique technologies and services that are a direct

result of our close ties to US oncology colleagues, something no other cancer hospital in India can claim. We are proud to offer comprehensive cancer care based on such high standards. As a team, AOI has committed to confronting cancer in India leveraging the best knowledge, technology and protocols the world has to offer. ”

Located at Nallagandla Serilingampally in Hyderabad, A.P., American Oncology Institute provides radiation therapy and medical oncology services based on US standards of care and guidelines developed by leading physicians at US academic hospitals. It offers surgical oncology services in partnership with Citizens Hospital. Dr. M. Babaiah, MD, South India’s preeminent radiation oncologist, serves as AOI’s Medical Director. Dr. Buddharaju, MD, with 20 years of US Board Certified practice experience in the US, is Chief of Medical Oncology. And renowned surgeon Dr. Chandrasekhar Rao, MS, MCh directs AOI’s Surgical Oncology Department in addition to serving as Medical Director, India for AOI’s parent company, which operates an integrated network of cancer centers in the US.

In addition to providing the same style and caliber of cancer care found at top hospitals in the US, AOI features state-of-the art technology such as: the TrueBeam linear accelerator, only three of which are in operation in the whole of India; the Calypso System, the only technology platform designed to provide real-time tracking of a tumor, without added ionizing radiation, for unprecedented accuracy and safety during radiation treatment and that is unavailable anywhere else in Southeast Asia; and 16-slice 4-D PET/CT with gating capability, options available in only three other Indian hospitals but part of both imaging and treatment models at AOI.
