Favorite horse American Pharoah (No. 18) won the 141st Kentucky Derby with Firing Line (No. 10) second and Dortmund (No. 8) third.

American Pharoah's win is noteworthy for a couple reasons. One, it makes 2015 the third Kentucky Derby in a row won by the favorite. California Chrome won in 2014 and Orb in 2013.

It's also a historic win for jockey Victor Espinoza, who rode American Pharoah to his third Kentucky Derby victory. Espinoza rode California Chrome last year, making him the sixth jockey ever to win back-to-back Derbys.

Dortmund set the pace early, but Firing Line challenged inside and American Pharoah from the outside. It was a close race until the final stretch, when the favorite overpowered its rivals, winning by half a length over Firing Line.

By one hour before race time, three horses had been scratched from the race: No. 7, El Kabeir (trainer John P. Terranova II, jockey Calvin Borel); No. 11, Stanford (trainer Todd Pletcher, jockey Florent Geroux); 12, International Star (trainer Michael J. Maker, jockey Miguel Mena); No. 22, Tale of Verve (trainer Dallas Stewart, jockey Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr.).

El Kabeir, who was out due to a left-front-foot injury, was to have been ridden by another back-to-back Derby winner, Calvin Borel.
