The 2012 Bollywood thriller, Kahaani, directed by Sujoy Ghosh had managed to impress critics and viewers alike. The script, written by Sujoy Ghosh and Advaita Kala, has been highly appreciated for its exploration of the themes of feminism and motherhood. The movie, starring actress Vidya Balan stood strong in the box office without needing to lean on any big stars or a male lead.

Now, the script perhaps gets its biggest compliment so far with the announcement of its adaptation by the international filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev, who has ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ to his credit.

Unlike most Bollywood mysteries, Kahaani’s script is powerful and absolutely unpredictable. Shot in Kolkata, it managed to capture the chaos of the city and the beauty that lies within that chaos. The movie serves as a treat to the eyes and mind.

The adapted film, titled ‘Deity’, will revolve around an American woman who visits Kolkata in search of her missing husband. As she gets closer to the truth, she finds herself at the center of a dangerous conspiracy. The story unfolds in the context of a colorful, week-long festival.

“Niels is the perfect director to transform the appeal of Kahaani to Deity,” YRF Entertainment CEO Uday Chopra said in a statement. “Niels has an elevated understanding of both international thrillers and strong female characters, and his vision for capturing the vibrancy and energy of contemporary Kolkata will appeal to audiences in the U.S. and worldwide.”.”

“Deity will be a compelling and exciting thriller with complex and interesting characters”, added Arden Oplev. “A neorealistic style to story and images will take the audience deep into Kolkata’s many different levels — a fascinating clash between American and Indian culture.”

Deity, produced by YRF entertainment is scheduled to begin production in February 2015 and will be shot in Kolkata, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
